sure okay posted:The Ebert review of AI is one of the first of his I'd ever read and I came upon it shortly after my first watch. This has always stuck with me I really liked how balanced the ambiguity of Ava's personhood was. Even though I accepted her as a person by the end, there's still that "is she really?" question lingering. AI on the other hand has no ambiguity. Haley Joel Osment is the POV character and he consistently acts like a human child. If you cut out the few scenes where we see he's not physically flesh and blood (like falling in the pool), you would have no reason to think he wasn't a human kid in an appalling situation. What kind of monster would kick little Haley Joel Osment?

Saw Dead or Alive with a group as a student. The ending was the hardest I've ever laughed at a movie. We also watched Ichi the Killer. It sure was something. I've long meant to get back to Miike movies as he's well regarded but there was some barf-worthy stuff in those two flicks

We weren't denied a masterpiece because of executive meddling, at best the prequel would have been a mediocre flick with cool practical effects.

Still can't believe EEaaO won last year. I mean I liked it, but a wacky action comedy with an extended butt plug scene is not normal oscar material. Until the mawkish last act that dragged on way too long. That's more like it.

Series of vaguely connected smaller budget horror films by writers/directors who like the old movies/genre, could of worked well. They just got greedy. Yeah. The Invisible Man was excellent and a big financial success. You could do the whole dark universe for less than the cost of the Mummy. Not that I think they should. Shared universes are small universes. Plus you get tone inconsistencies; a Jekyll film could be great in the same style as Invisible Man, but a Frankenstein with no camp elements sounds unappealing. Let things stand alone.

The first one was decent, except the baby subplot was so stupid. We know the monsters have been on earth more than 9 months. Was the pregnancy by choice? Was one or both parents a religious fundamentalist who wouldn't consider abortion? What if the baby cries and they have to choose between killing it or everyone dying? So much you could do with that but instead the resolution is just "a mattress over the trapdoor". Apparently that wasn't an option before. I saw the sequel, don't recall much about it. A prequel might be a cool as a spectacle.

reissues used to be common, it was home media that killed them. I saw most of the Disney classics in cinema before they were on VHS. Disney was super reluctant to release them on VHS, thinking it would reduce their "brand prestige", until they discovered how much money it made so they released them all plus straight to VHS shovelware sequels.

I usually go to one of two indie cinemas near me and almost never get annoyed by other viewers. Going to the imax at the local chain cinema for Dunc 2 at opening weekend. Not sure how wise this decision will turn out to be.

Saw Dune. I liked it a lot and would recommend. It's a very good looking film and I'm glad I saw it on imax. The Harkonen planet was striking, though the millitary parade in pseudo-black and white evoked WW2 in a way that felt a bit on the nose. A couple other moments took me out just a little. One has Paul march menacingly toward the camera in robes and hood looking very Episode 3 Anakin. The other was where Stilgar says "only the true messiah denies his divinity". There was laughter at that, and it's meant to be funny, but it was like it was daring the audience to shout Monty Python quotes at the screen. Fortunately the audience was fine. Packed room, chain cinema, opening weekend, and nobody was annoying.
