Remember a bunch of posts after Rocky was people saying they'd not ever bothered to watch it before.

There's 10 billion movies, if you pick a basic one, we can enjoy watching it again and think back to previous times. If you pick a terrible one we can laugh about it.

I don't regret watching any of the movies last year.

after my pick last year i started making a list of possible picks, but on getting drawn last week and looking them up they all had poo poo streaming options.

worst of all was Sleuth, an absolute classic, both lead actors nominated for Best Actor for the movie. and i see this, not even for rent anywhere, no newer home release than a dvd

I looked it up and apparently the film is now owned by Bristol Myers Squibb, the pharmaceutical company lol

Hell or High Water

a rotting world where everyone just kinda sucks.

its interesting that the cops we follow dont really accomplish anything, they take the waitresses money, they guess where the final hit will be but dont get there soon enough to do anything about it, one dies, and the other makes a shot in a standoff that never couldve ended any other way. they never figure out anything about the casinos

on the topic of some things feeling a little contrived or heavy handed, i thought the bank manager actively trying to scuttle the payout at the end and sweating over it was real silly. the evil hanging over this movie isnt a single mean bank manager lol

i quite liked the final shootout and the brutality of those shots, as others have pointed out

Conan the Barbarian

People have no grasp of what they do.
You broke into my house, stole my property, murdered my servants, and my pets. And that is what grieves me the most!
You killed my snake.
Thorgrim is beside himself with grief.
He raised that snake from the time it was born.

I love how quiet this movie this, sparse dialogue, sparse music. Little explanation of who these people are or where they are, they just are. No magical quest or ancient legend for Conan to follow, he just does what is needed and works towards his revenge. The giant snake fight never switching to some epic music is so great.

I love the scene of Conan and Subotai comparing their gods.

The few montages feel very different to me than those in other movies, they aren't pushing forward something occurring or demonstrating some series of actions and buildup, but instead feel like random scenes we just get a peak at, like a clip show for a series we don't get to see. There's endless stories beyond this implied, great for a pulp hero.

amazing, wonderful movie. i'd love to see how they shot they guy climbing out of the bank ceiling

My read on the criminal court, is that even if you don't sympathize with Lorre's character, what justice does it bring? maybe they kill him, and then what? dump his body somewhere? pin a note to it saying "hi im the killer"? maybe they just hide the body and the police still think the killer is at large until everyone just forgets about? thats awful too, and the mothers in the end are left even worse off. they all rile themselves up that the police will be too kind to him but he could just as easily be killed in prison or something

i love how stupid burton is in this, not just the stuff like managing to avoid fights as mentioned (lol at him dropping his knife) but even just trying to be cool and do things like quote himself. he's just on a total different wavelength from the rest of the movie

holy poo poo the noise of this film, just constant for the first 2/3rds of it, the humming ac and lights at home, the overwhelming first pizza scene, constant construction or sirens, the fuckin bagpipes played twice as loud as the rest of the movie. this along with the camerawork is amazing

Day of the Dead

something i really love about this movie is how we come to this situation as it's falling apart, and dont really know everything going on. we never find out how cooper really died, we never even meet him. was "frankenstein" involved with it, or just taking advantage of the situation?

all the intro above ground stuff was filmed in fort myers florida, im familiar with many of those buildings, which is neat. the idea of giant tunnels like this in florida is really silly but thats fine

as rodbeard said plenty of chuckles, or lines i think back on and think are funnier than i did when i heard them in the movie itself

Colm Meaney ftw forever

for as much of the humor is obviously supposed to be in the characters and writing, the biggest laughs from me were just in the simple physical stuff, alan finally getting shot throwing away the gun is hilarious, as was him getting stuck in the window

i actually liked the way this handled the multiple plot threads and never felt like it was lacking when it switched, the rick moranis plot was pretty thin tho. the dianne wiest plot was my favorite, its fun to see goofy young keanu

while most of the humor was very natural, some of it felt kinda wacky and out of place, like gil washing his hands over and over while asking how his son got to be so nervous, might as well stick in a sitcom laugh track at that

Dirty Duck

When I was about 15 years old, I accidentally slammed my fingers in a car door in my parents' garage. My mom had already walked into the house before I even left the car, so nobody saw it happen. My entire hand was trapped in the car door, which was fully closed and locked, and three of my fingers were crushed under the frame. The pain was excruciating. I yelled of course, but because of the soundproofing in the walls, nobody heard me at first. Trying to pull my hand out was pointless and only hurt more, and I had no keys so I couldn't open the door. I started to realize that nobody was going to help me, at least not right away, and that I was probably going to be stuck there for a while. I stood there for what felt like forever, in overwhelming pain the entire time, shouting for help at intervals and probably sounding more and more desperate.

I remember wondering to myself at some point if maybe my nervous system would adapt to the pain after a few minutes, or if my hand might go numb or start to hurt less. But no, the entire time I was stuck, I was in constant agony, and at no point did it let up even a little. In fact as time went on and I got more and more frustrated, the pain intensified. By the time my mom finally heard my shouting and came to help, I felt like I was going to be trapped there forever. When I think back on this I realize that I don't really remember the initial injury or how much it hurt, I just remember how endless the experience felt. The pain was intense, but the exasperation of being confined somewhere with absolutely no way out was the thing that got to me, and that made the brief time I was stuck feel like hours. Dirty Duck (1974) has a runtime of 75 minutes.

I love that they got Leiji Matsumoto for this, his classic character design gives the movie a similar texture to Daft Punks music, both old and new at once.

The Aerodynamic chase and Digital Love are absolute highlights for me.

I had Face to Face in my head all morning before watching this.

Down and Dirty Duck

ahhhh i liked this a lot thanks for picking it

The art style is great for the story, ugly and fluid, not too real to actually be horny

There's this double layer of imagination to it, where not only do we just witness things Willard is just thinking about (shooting & loving people, crushing his car, turning into king kong) but the entire thing is is the abstract ideas of the creators, i found this a lot of fun
