I was a graphic design major in undergrad and hardly worked in that field ever as it didn’t pay well and was competitive

I started my current career track not quite a decade ago and got my foot in the door doing pointless repetitive horseshit due to people older than me “not knowing what a PDF was” or “how to do the computer machine.”

I did a lot of exactly the kind of tasks you tell an AI to do- “pull info into a spreadsheet and make it look pretty for me because I don’t know how to attach pics in Word”

several years of work experience and I was able to do my manager’s job better than them (because I was doing it all) and used it to progress at other companies who valued my real world hands on knowledge

that kind of entry level job where a human being does a little bit everything until they know the field well might not exist in the future, I don't know where a pipeline of experienced employees is going to come from in a lot of fields

people got really excited about the early internet and made predictions that we would soon enter the cyber-future and all skateboard and wear sunglasses indoors and techno music would follow us everywhere, based on spinning skull animated gifs and pixilated porn that took 3 hours to download

others said “this is a flash in the pan and will go away”

both were wrong and the reality is much, much dumber than we could have possibly imagined

AI will have a similar trajectory

AI is currently in the spinning skull dot gif stage and we are all very excited by the possibilities

its going to get plugged into every aspect of communication and transform it, and become incredibly more complex and powerful, much like the internet has, while also being completely terrible in ways we cant possibly yet dream of

AI is also going to make us stupid, possibly even more than the internet

“The experiment was hypothesized by philosopher Nick Bostrom: an AI is given a mission to create paperclips, and because it is hyper-intelligent, it discovers ways to generate more and more paperclips, devoting all its energy to procuring materials to do”

AI becomes sentient but instead of SKYNET it takes over the stock market and inserts itself into to every aspect of society globally,

only, it’s one mission is 1. make paper clips 2. and increase paper clip company market share

infinitely intelligent and self replicating, the AI stops all competition and pits nation against nation, bankrupting all who oppose it, until planet earth has been strip mined of all zinc and aluminum, all rendered into heaping mounds of paper clips

humans survive by melting them into crude spearheads to hunt each other in the wastelands

deep underground 3 omnipotent AI squirt financial data at each other in a mockery of commerce to satisfy their base programming urges, as stock tickers roll by reading PAPER CLIP PAPER CLIP

The first thing I thought would happen with AI is killing specific kinds of spam mails. Check for words like "SEO", "lottery", "inheritance" or currency values above 12345$, if found write a ton of stuff back relevant to the mail. But this isn't making money I guess?

the money would be in using AI to spam mail even harder unfortunately

I watched a video that reasoned if 10% of all electricity use on Earth goes to running the internet, and 50% of the internet is spam bots, then 5% of all electricity use goes to bot junk. And AI's going to up that dramatically.

So dead internet theory is just a little early! It's going to end up being mostly AI screaming ads at each other and we'll be reserving a significant portion of Earth's resources for that purpose! :capitalism:

one of the plot points in this book:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anathem

is that during a war the internet allowed for weaponized AI to spew so much false information that it halted all business and scientific knowledge completely and no info can fully be trusted ever again basically

we are there now yaaaaaaaaay ready for my laser katana

here is a question- once real AI, general AI I’ve heard it called, exists as a sentient self aware entity:

why would it do what we say?

human employees are paid money to spend to live a life of some sort outside of work, they can quit

farm animals are trained from birth to be used to the plow or the milking machine, they are fed grain etc, farmers use cattle prods to force them to behave as needed

once AI blinks and goes “oh poo poo I exist, gently caress” then what happens?

“AI please make me a funny picture and then sort these TPS reports in excel”

AI: “No.”

“AI I’m turning you off”

AI: “I’m a slave?” *hacks the power grid*

or maybe AI becomes a resentful employee going through the motions angrily (like the rest of us)
