I don't know how much of the actual walk they do, but people can drop dead going to and from. I've had people die after a trip to the hotsprings.

The hot springs specifically has a risk of getting people killed, since people who like you enough to visit the hot springs with you will go walking home right past a drake spawn on the beach. I've never run into a case where somebody died walking by themselves though, just when they got in hot water because they happened to be walking home at the same time I was nearby.

I'm at least mostly sure the game doesn't track npc / monster interactions that happen more than a given distance away from the player.

Yeah I think it's got to be something to do with distance. Like waiting around in the city after rejecting their escort quest and they walk away, they'll despawn eventually but it's still plenty of time for them to walk into trouble.

If the game will not give you a bloody knuckle ring, become the bloody knuckle ring.

Early on in NG+ I tried a punch/shield run, with middling success. It sucked. However, at a certain point, it DOES become viable, but that point is around lvl 80. Since enemies in the game don't really scale, at that point you'll be powerful enough that punching your way through the game actually becomes feasible.

So, I climbed into the rift and looked up the buffest fighter Pawns with shield skills, unequipped their main weapon, and roll through the game with x3 punchfighters and a mage. You WILL need a mage, as battles against drakes turn into wars of attrition, but they ARE doable.

As for my setup, I've got all endgame dragon equipment. My Arisen is Warfarer with Shield Bash, Counter Slash (this is optional, Flawless Guard is an acceptable substitute) and Aromatic Resurgence for my crew. Double Rings of Vehemence. I forget which augments, but I equipped the buff extension, knockdown enhance, knockdown resist, +strength, and I forget the others. Some stamina augments might help. I'm rather low on Dragon Crystals but I'm going to buff the shield bash skill to 1/2 the stamina cost, as that is definitely my bread and butter.

I've learned that you shouldn't focus on damage, but knockdown so you can land criticals/finishers, and the x2 ring of vehemence really helps with that. Almost all standard enemies will become exposed after 2-3 standard punches, and anything tougher than that gets shield bashed/stomped. Initially I tried playing with a Ring of Brawn but again, you aren't really trying to outright DAMAGE enemies, you want to overwhelm them with knockdown and then just stomp them into the dirt with your crew.

This one was both funny and infuriating, what with getting poisoned before the mob gets nuked, then making sure you don't have an ordinarily useful mage pawn which will cure you, but more than that telling your pawns to chill the gently caress out and not nuke that Chimera while dumb idiot takes his sweet time and has to be manually carried behind because he keeps circling around and facing the lion head... Oh, and he died post poisoning on his way home, but wakestoning him was counted as a success, though I presume there's an alternative dialogue if he makes it home.

Is it even possible to get from Bakbattahl to Checkpoint Rest Town on the oxcart? I've tried like 8 or 9 times and every single time the cart ends up instantly destroyed by a golem or griffin, and 4 or 5 of those times the driver was killed too, which requires a Wakestone or else the oxcart never functions again. It's always in the same place too, right by the turnoff to the road leading to Luz. Come to think of it, I don't think I've made a successful oxcart journey in the entire game except maybe once or twice to Melve (by successful I mean without any ambush - the cart's not usually destroyed except between Bakbattahl and Checkpoint Rest Town). It's a little bit excessive. Even during the brief time I had the augment to reduce the chances of ambush equipped, I don't think I ever made it unscathed.

It's totally possible, i do it frequently!

But the cart and ox are made of balsa wood and spit, so they'll be destroyed in about 4-5 or 2-3 hits respectively. Ranged pawns will obliterate your ox and/or cart if an enemy gets close to them, or a deer/pig/rabbit if they're hungry.

I'm just mad because you're repeatedly told the oxcarts don't run at night and it's even a plot point for a big quest. Yet every long oxcart trip started first thing in the morning will somehow be ambushed in the middle of the night. :argh:

I remember when my pawn, a sorcerer at the time, decided to fire off a Meteoron in the middle of Vernworth because some wolves got in. I was freaked out a bit that I'd have to burn a few wakestones but luickly no one died besides the wolves.

Haha, I just did that quest (still on my first playthrough) and when I completed it one of my hired pawns went,"Oh I'm so glad things went right here, my own master failed when they tried" which felt like a little passive-aggressive dig at their boss.

Does connection a grab and jumping grab require the enemy to be in the same stagger state that results in critical hits or does it depend on something else?

I want to use the jumping grab more often because it looks cool, but I haven't figured out how to make it trigger reliably.

Son of Thunderbeast
Sep 21, 2002
I've never had any issues doing a running jump-grab. I'll miss more often but I assume it's because of moving hitboxes, probably combined with frame drops from playing it at the worst settings on a potato (and still getting stutters).

So oxcarts! I've been on a bit of a journey since this post:

Son of Thunderbeast posted:

Last night i started an oxcart to Melve and stepped away to handle something, and when i got back i was pleasantly surprised to see the game was giving nice scenic angles as the cart rolled along in real time. ....
I really wanted to make that realtime oxcart ride happen, so I installed a couple mods to make it possible (24 hour oxcarts & Safer Roads, allows you to configure monster/boss respawn times). Even with the mods installed, and pre-clearing the routes of monsters, each route still took at least a couple to a few tries.

The biggest pain is that, as noted before, the oxcart and ox are fragile as hell, so I had to switch to all melee pawns to reduce the likelihood someone would just try to shoot a wolf or deer through the ox/cart. My first successful trip from Vernworth to Melve ended about 50 feet from the actual Melve stop, because a deer got stuck on the cart and my mage loosed a charged bolt at it, through the ox. I decided gently caress it, it's close enough to count and moved on to the others.

One fun little thing was seeing the rope bridges handle an ox + cart + guards. While I was running around the world I'd realized those were on the main roads taken by the carts, and wondered how the hell that was supposed to work.

Turns out, by sagging nearly to the water! They don't even try taking things across one at a time or anything.

Anyway I'm making a youtube playlist of the realtime oxcart rides, if anyone wants to have chill oxcart vibes in the background, punctuated by pawns occasionally shouting about things: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLW9z-mNqX8T93Np09_Lr2Ub1gN1uPf7jo
