I'm getting pretty excellent performance, solid 60-90 FPS in the field, dips to 50-55 with occasional stutters in the big city. And I'm on a <$1000 PC - 3070, 5600X and 16 gigs of ram. All settings are on High

Not really blown away by the actual game yet but I was pretty lukewarm on the first one too and this seems to be largely more of the same, to the point where it kind of feels like a remaster rather than a whole new game.

Do the enemy encounter rates ever change? I'm already getting extremely tired of running into a pack of goblins, wolves, harpies or bandits literally every ~5-10 seconds after finishing the last group.

edit for future readers: It seems like the majority of enemies either don't respawn or have very long (multi-day) respawn timers so it's not as bad as I first thought, once you clear a path you can keep traversing it unaccosted for a while.

Again, just want to report that some people are getting significant gains on PC by increasing the priority of Dragons Dogma to high on taskmanager. Might be worth trying out, I'll be testing it later.

I eliminated almost all of my stutters by disabling the data harvesting in system -> network, so anyone who blindly accepted the agreement at the beginning should try that. I've anecdotally heard from others who were having minimal stuttering that they have it disabled.

I'm on a 3070 which you can get for under $400 these days and a 5600x cpu which is under $150 and performance is fine :shobon: dips a bit in the city but still playable (45-50 fps). Stuttering went away when I turned off data harvesting.

I loaded up the game just to see how it ran and mess with the settings so I skipped through the cutscenes and character creator. Then I came back later to start a new game.

How is there no new game option? I had to delete the save from the steam folder to start over.

It makes a lot more sense in the context of just how world-altering some things can be: there are things that can happen that dramatically alter the state of the world and the one-save no-restarting system is meant to force you into facing the ramifications of them.

One example is the Dragonblight curse which will eventually make the cursed pawn transform into a dragon the next time you rest at an inn, and when you wake up literally the entire town is dead. Every single person, including questgivers afaik

Mystic Spearman rules. Stunning enemies, teleporting around the battlefield, and using telekinesis to launch enemies and objects at other enemies. Hell yeah. Probably going to stick with this all the way through

There's a quest in the capital to escort an oxcart on a new route to a village whose name I think begins with H - that led into the mystic Spearman unlock for me
There's a fight going on at the village and you have to help out, then a guy talks to you and you have an option to ask about his fighting style. Asking about it unlocks it.

Not sure if the oxcart quest intentionally led to that fight but that's the way it worked for me. You may also need to be a certain level for the quest or fight to happen, I think I was level 30ish.

Should I try and get a full pawn party right at the start after making my own? Or just roll with the main pawn for a while? I guess the RC costs will stop me from hiring, say, Ralsei's level 28 mage (looks great btw) ?

Pawns that are your level or lower cost 0RC, there's only a cost if they're above your level. Definitely get a full party asap

I was hating on this game a little at first but it has really grown on me. It's a great game for just setting out and adventuring, I've barely touched the story and I'm already level 35 or something just from wandering around killing things.

It also makes a good game to play while doing something else (like working ) because pausing also mutes it.

So I either have been softbanned for deleting my character or I'm failing the pawn meta. I've only ever had her hired out by Goons. Anyone else here start a new character and had the same experience?

I noticed that my pawn started getting hired a whole lot less as I leveled up, so you may just be ahead of the level curve everyone else is at. Most players are probably still pretty low level.

I have a bunch of vocations at max or near max and I think Thief's Headsplitter/Skullsplitter is the highest raw damage per second attack I've seen. By the time you get Desert-level weapons it vastly outpaces even high-end Sorcerer spells - in fact, it makes every other damage-dealing attack in Thief feel wimpy by comparison. This is probably less true at lower levels since its power comes from hitting a ton of times very quickly, so against enemies with high defense relative to your attack it will be worse and may deal less damage than a single big attack.

Mystic Archer seems like it may be close in raw DPS when I get max rank - especially the Ice attack that shoots homing arrows that repeatedly pirece their targets and just keep hitting for a while, and the stone/physical spell that can hit one target like 12 times. Sorcerer is definitely outclassed by the time you hit the desert, and Mystic Spear doesn't seem very damage-heavy at this point either.

Warrior is very very strong early on but it it has kind of fallen off as my Attack eclipsed enemy Defense because of how slow its hits are - as a thief I can Skullsplitter 50% of one health bar off a minotaur 1-2 entire times in the time it takes to wind up an attack as a Warrior which won't do as much damage as a single Skullsplitter.

Where can I find advanced vocations beyond the first two? I thought the elf Arborist would lead to Magic Archer but no dice.

For Magic Archer unlock:
(Minor/vague spoiler)
If you find a big cave in the desert where an NPC at the entrance warns you against going inside then you get an achievement when you enter, you're on your way

(More specific, spoiling an area name)
An imposing cave in the south part of the desert brings you to Volcanic Isle where the quest is.

(Spoiling exactly who/where it is)
When you get to the Volcanic Isle (through the imposing cave in the south end of the desert) you'll find a short bald guy complaining about back pain. Give him 3 flowers to cure his pain, then he will lead you to his house. At his house you'll meet his wife, and the husband will throw out his back again. Offer to lead him to the Hot Springs. Once you do, his wife will appear and thank you for helping him, then tell you to visit her home later to learn how to be a Magic Archer. Pro Tip: You can just talk to her again right away to learn, without having to go to her house later.

Man, I got a tutorial popup about dragonblight or whatever the pawn STD is and :staredog: You can only get rid of it by passing it on to someone else. I got rid of that pawn as soon as I could (I found it outdoors or I would've immediately replaced it) but now there's no knowing if I have it instead. :negative:

Then I died to a wild dragon and the game crashed when I reloaded. I wouldn't have died if I was still playing thief but I was trying to level up mystic spearhand. It's a fun class but it doesn't feel as strong so far.

If you want to spoil yourself on how to tell if your pawns have it:

After it progresses for a while, they will start arguing with you when you issue d-pad commands and refusing to follow your orders. This is when you know you absolutely must get rid of them to prevent the worst of Dragonblight.

After getting trickster to max level I gotta say I really don't get it. The only skills that seem worthwhile are the clone manipulation skills and the maister skill. I tried using the illusory walls and floor quite a bit and never noticed them having any effect whatsoever. That and the gameplan of distracting enemies for your pawns just seem flawed when the player can do twice as much damage as three pawns put together. Maybe I just suck at selecting pawns. Oh well, I stumbled onto the magic archer class at right about the same time.

I feel pretty much the same way. By the time you unlock it your pawns are dropping off in usefulness so it just doesn't feel good to rely on them to do all the damage. Trying to kill e.g. a golem as a trickster is just incredibly frustrating, and most of its abilities seem designed around fighting groups of small enemies instead of single big targets. I also can't consistently get it to take aggro on big monsters, it feels really spotty against them.

I do agree with fextralife on magic archers being better than thieves. Similar damage output per skill but you can just stand back launching tons of skills without worrying about positioning or being in melee range. How the hell did they put Mage at #1 though lmao

I definitely wouldn't recommend buying this game at $70 but I don't recommend buying any game at $70. I work from home and have a lot of downtime so I had fun with it because it works well for that - it's easy to pick up and put down at any time and it mutes itself when you pause. So that's pretty cool. My major complaints are that there's really not much content outside of quests and fights - which is cool and all, but exploration feels very dull outside of occasional cool emergent battles - there's a grueling amount of meaningless trash fights and there are very, very few rewards worth exploring for. There's almost no exciting loot to find or hidden quests or neat things to find out in the world, not much to unlock (there should be more vocations and skills IMO), tricky secrets to stumble across, etc. There are very few monster types. Everything that happens in this game happens through quests in the villages and cities which mostly amount to "run to this other place" and rarely much more.

Seems like a slam dunk of a $30 Dark Arisen version in a few years but unless you're a real diehard Dragon's Dogma fan it can absolutely be slept on for now.
