I like how I don’t even have to know there’s an election upcoming, to know there’s an election upcoming. Just need to wait and hear the racist howls coming from the east.

kaom posted:Is this down to Montreal vs the rest of the province demographics, or something else? The current projections are here:https://338canada.com/quebec/. Take that all with a grain of salt, as polling by voting district in Canada is generally very poorly done and probably doubly bad in French speaking regions. Seems like the modeling is really looking at the fact that there's 4 parties with between 10 and 18% of the vote, and one massively ahead with 40% and that's a recipie for a landslide in a first past the post system. The Liberals will absolutely crush a whole bunch of Montréal ridings, the other parties will squeak out seats in a few places, the the CAQ will win everywhere else.

I'm unaware of his ethnic background, just that he was from Quebec. I just think it's kind of incredible to hear essentially "Quebecois love peace, unlike those immigrants" when we have two pretty infamous mass shootings having taken place there committed by folks from Quebec, one such just a handful of years ago. And that one incited by similarly xenophobic comments.

run on sentience posted:So CBS is in fact pushing for paid plasma donation. Because they aren't already getting enough backlash from getting rid of mandatory masking, I guess. I was reminded of this topic thanks to a great guest essay on plasma donation in the US from the NYT. So you probably won't be surprised that Canadian Blood Services went ahead and signed a shady-rear end deal to privatize plasma collection: Globe and Mail posted:Canadian Blood Services has for the first time completed an agreement with a private, for-profit company to collect blood plasma from the country’s donors – a move that the head of the agency says will open the door to paid plasma collection in Ontario and B.C., where the practice is currently banned. This is an attempt to solve a serious problem given that, as the first article suggests, most of the plasma on the global market comes from the poor and often desperate in the US... except it just seems to be copying the American solution with minimal improvements?

Aw man I missed "who should be on the money" chat again. Anyway here's a good tweet: https://twitter.com/Slade/status/1568319564349317124 Honouring artists in general would be pretty cool. Double power move if they're women, but I'd love to see Gord Downie on the 20, or even Neil Young. Peart would be a clever choice, because it'd still please all the dumb fans who thought he was always a conservative and not just a kid who read books and smoked a shitload of weed. I'm now remembering working a busy weekend door/coat check shift at the arcade bar. This young guy pays his cover and we go to hand him at $10 and some change back. He says something like "I don't want that new tenner [with Viola Desmond] on it, give me the real tenner. I gotta support our first Prime Minister." I shot a glance to my coworker (who is Indigenous) and handed the guy an old ten. As soon as he was out of earshot, both of us went "GROSS!" I should check in on my Nonna and Zia, honestly. They're huge fans of the Queen (which is especially odd because they're hardcore Roman Catholics), I think they even have a framed letter from her in response to something.

Between the ginned up rage against Trudeau from the right and the general dislike of him from the general public, this can very well be a 'kick the bums out' election where the alternate party wins by default. Don't say it can't happen, our electorate doesn't pay attention.

I am even more mad now that the Libs backed out of changing our voting system to something less hosed. They have literally doomed us all with their incompetence and inability to wield math equations for the greater good.
