That seems like a whole lot of cat6. Could you have run some of that into dumb hubs in each room and then it's just one cable back to the brain? I'm not sure what speed/protocol you are using of course, that would change things. It also makes me think there must be a bulk Ethernet cable, like this monstrosity (25 Pair Cat5e), but a bit less monstrous I guess.

so you run everything in conduit then you go ahead and ruin it by leaving them all taped together

This is the worst thing I've seen in this thread. Who puts bananas in the fridge? Also FWIW, they make car chargers that are setup to communicate about how much load they can draw. The usual usage is putting two of them on the same circuit, so if you've only got one plugged in you get full amperage.

Running multiple drops of Cat6 to each room and avoiding lovely dumb hubs hanging off the wall is absolutely the correct decision.

I mean, he has this whole-rear end utility run loft setup, wouldn't hurt to hang a couple hubs next to his wiring junction boxes up out of the way and run the cable down from there.

I work in an electrical substation that literally provides power for a few million people. Your SINGLE FAMILY HOME is rivaling my entire station in the amount of wiring. (only partially exaggerating) amazing.

you've got enough copper in those walls to create an L-shaped electromagnet.

Residential electrical wiring in the United Kingdom is apparently deeply weird but I don't think wiring each individual switch, fixture, and receptacle on its own home-run circuit to whatever you call the main electrical panel is the solution. Also you should have used whatever is the European equivalent to sendcutsend or oshcut to make your little 96 penetration plenum cover, a nice laser/waterjet cut piece wouldn't have gotten all bendy like what happened to your metal sheet after you shoved a ryobi into it a hundred times. You did just fine with your amount of ethernet drops though. My parents built themselves a new house while I was in grad school a decade ago and I ran a bunch of low voltage carlon tubing to every room and later did maybe half your number of ethernet drops in them. Sure they just use wifi on their plethora of random tablets nowadays, but it's the principle right?

Now I know how Europeans feel when they look at American timber framed housing.

You should have 3-phase power, like a real european home.

The amount of work you're prepared to do to have a "smart" home is mind boggling. I appreciate the HVAC system for being cool but the doors and individual power controls for all the spotlights is ridiculous and will almost certainly be incredibly clunky. Having all the wiring in the attic space and then just dropping down vertically does seem a lot nicer than the mysterious hodge podge of cabling through various wall cavities that I've ended up with. distortion park fucked around with this message at 07:23 on May 26, 2023 |

It's a good thing you've installed all those smart ventilation systems, otherwise you'd be in danger of asphyxiation when he sucks all the air in the room in through his teeth

Did you re-run the calculations for the shared neutrals? The live is still going to have 1 fixture's worth of power, but your now-ring-in-that-spur neutral is going to have 3. I don't know specifically how your fixtures are wired, but I presume the neutrals won't be in series, right?

I really don't think anyone is suggesting hanging switches on interior walls, but having switches in utility spaces as close as possible to the area that they'll serve. Either way, no one needs this much ethernet.

I’m genuinely interested in what the electrician has to say as I was told very clearly that they don’t like signing off other people’s work, but that’s just hearsay so far. Also my house has nearly a kilometre of cat 7a, though fewer drops and bigger house. Like if you’re going to do it might as well overdo it.

Individually addressing 36 spotlights is all well and good, but if you really want to have complete lighting control then you'll want to get them on little motors so you can adjust their direction too.

I really hope it all works out in the end, it's going to be a very nicely fitted out house and so far the design seems promising.

Most people use smart home stuff so they don't need to home run power or HVAC all the way back to the central control area. Looking forward to the full stage lighting setup though.
