I found the ending to Mother of Learning decent though not great. Maybe that's because I read the whole thing through in one go once it was completed and didn't have time to build up much in the way of expectations, though.

What drives me away from most webfiction isn't the lack of a tightly written plot or well executed narrative devices, it's the bad grammar and extremely basic, clumsy prose. Worm was by no means a great book even by my standards but it managed to do much better on those things than most stuff on the web. Generally when I read webfiction I intend to shut my brain off for a bit and have some fun, and while experiences may differ it did that for me.

The first arc's real world half was so predictable and shallow. So was the game half I guess, but you expect an MMO to be pretty much straightforward and fighty. So I'm glad the author seems to be trying to add more interesting scenes and (hopefully) characters to the real world than just more fights. But yeah, I think it has potential and I look forward to a more lengthy story.

Below that though, there’s an enormous number of forgettable stuff and tons of horrible stuff, as you’d expect for a field where anyone can put up whatever they want. I enjoy the stories I like, but I’m certainly not going out and soliciting new random web fiction without someone here referencing it. That is actually one advantage webfiction has. If I go out and buy a new book and it's horrible, I feel bad for wasting the money. If I put something off RR on my Kindle and hate it, it just takes a few seconds to hit delete. And while there's a lot more horrible webfiction out there, it's not like professional novels don't have their share of tire fires too.

I found both Erin and Ryouka to be pretty unpleasant to share headspace with (albeit for different reasons) and every other character is pretty much a minor side story at most. Azarinth isn't a lot better in this regard, admittedly, since at least for the first hundred chapters or so the main character is basically a mindless battle junky that actively avoids having to interact with other human beings so she can go do OP isekai fights.

I'd say it's pretty good - it's a concept I've seen done before, and it is indeed heavy on the numbers going up, but it's well written and good at what it's trying to be. Plus it's already pretty long, while I prefer over whatever the newest and hottest serials that just have a few thousand words might be. Judging by the review section, it also appears to be review bombed by people who don't like its message of "Sexism is bad." LLSix posted:Just read chapter 22 of book 2 in Tower of Somnus. The mystery thing the rival exec is looking for in Cat’s old town is Cat, isn’t it? They can't find her because she isn’t there. The stallesp are putting the screws to their pet exec to eliminate Cat because they failed to kill Dorrik’s crew in the tower repeatedly and she's the only member they can get at in the real world. Which when I write it out like that is dumb of them, but what else could be worth all this risk that is also so well hidden? I had a similar thought, but while it's easy to see why they'd want Kat dead, as her alien contacts are a big threat to their plans, it's hard to imagine how they could have good enough intel to know where she is without finding out "oh, she moved out to attend college" when one of their big-wigs literally runs the college. Also Xander did piss off the merc side of the villain alliance, so I was honestly expecting them to just be moving in on him. Personally I like the more complicated/less action heavy real world arc this book. She's already killing stuff in the game, spending the awake chapters investigating and learning about the world makes for a nice change of pace to me. Which is bad and sexist, but a lot of morons in real life don't think that's sexist today. I'm amazed you could pick up on what might as well be clever subtext if you're dumb enough to also get upset by being reminded it exists. I mean, I'd say it's a lot worse than that. Elaine heals a woman that's beaten by her husband because she "had a headache tonight", and when she reports it to her father the guard his response is "well, he's the husband so she's his property, we can't do anything." She's denied the chance to study for combat related skills the boys get, and she's the only woman in her class of five hundred and it's observed that the few women who do make it through are the best of the best because of the discrimination they face. It's very much laid out as a setting where being a woman is having every deck stacked against you, even if Elaine is lucky enough to avoid the worst of it because she's mostly around people who realize the whole thing is bullshit. Infinity Gaia posted:I've caught up with Dragoneye Moon and it was... Fine? It's extremely by the numbers, and only really showed some first glimpse of something more interesting in a very recent chapter. I also feel like it's kind of lame that Elaine was able to skip straight into being a Sentinel. The story makes a big show of how sexist the society is, and Elaine just kinda barely seems to feel any of it. Sure, it's the basis of her initial thrust into adventure, and occasionally she has to roll her eyes at guards at a gate or whatever, but for something that was extremely focused on it feels like it affects her less and less. You'd think the probably sexist senate and such would veto her skipping straight into one of the most powerful roles in the setting, super healer or not. Plus it would've been interesting to see her having to work with a team that may have been less overtly kind to her, maybe somewhat less competent overall. The mention of how Squad 13 seems to never make it back made me think the author was going to put her as a second in command in it, and she'd have to prove herself by saving her sexist macho teammate rangers. I'd probably agree with that... if Elaine had been elevated to the position of Sentinel of anything else except healing. Healing seems to be one of the professions most accepting of powerful women in the Dragoneye world, and she'd proven herself not just by her deeds but by publishing her explanation of how the body works. And remember Elaine has been constantly warned that she'll be targeted since ID shows her as a healer and healers are considered weak and easy targets; I suspect the more misogynistic members heard about appointing a woman as Sentinel of healing and thought "well, figures the weak one is their token woman; they'd never make a woman a sentinel that would actually be in charge of a fight." See also Artemis; she got a lot of pushback about being a ranger but as soon as she decided to open a school Senators were racing to enroll their kids; I don't think it was ever specified but I'm guessing "teaching" might be another profession that's considered more acceptable for women. I'm generally in agreement with your other point, though; Dragoneye's society is presented as very sexist but Elaine mostly avoids it by lucking into mostly dealing with the more progressive people. Even her parents were clearly much more accepting of independent women than most of society. Silynt posted:I dunno, I kind of agree. Like, given that they have a sexist society, I would think that Night, the most powerful person alive who has existed since the dawn of civilization, probably would be sexist himself. His easy acceptance of Elaine is kind of baffling to me, given his history and the overall state of the world. Night seems likely to be a special case for... well, a lot of reasons actually. Just because he's old doesn't mean he's going to be sexist, especially given one of the "reasons" given for sexism in Dragoneye is wanting women to be safe at home giving birth to more kids, and vampires reproduce in an entirely different way. Arguably they wouldn't even have any use for differentiating vampires by sex. Bremen fucked around with this message at 06:24 on Mar 11, 2021 |

To give an example, the last thing that was happening where I stopped was Erin ended up in another town, decided she wanted to stay a bit, and sent a few messages back to friends in her town. Except she either forgot or completely ignored the barmaid she left in the inn without money or food in a freezing winter, and who was not allowed to enter the only nearby town. It wasn't like I put it down there and said "no, this is a step too far" but it was just one more thing. And that was shortly after she nearly burned down an alchemist shop because she just started throwing ingredients together while completely ignoring the alchemist trying to stop her, or decided to convert a possibly crazy antman to Christianity and never take any precautions that this wouldn't backfire spectacularly, drove a soulbonded skeleton to trying to murder her by treating him like dirt despite the fact he was clearly a thinking being, and so many other things that makes it clear she never, ever imagines anything she does might have consequences. And of course they almost never do (at least that hurt her), because... well, I was going to say because the author apparently loves her, but honestly it's probably simpler than that in that she probably would have died within a few days and it wouldn't have made for much of a story. I mean, maybe the author writes her that way intentionally and other readers consider it an interesting character flaw or whatever, but it's just makes the story frustrating for me. And somehow she's still a less frustrating character than Ryouka.

That said, she's pleasant to read about because it turns out that consistently advocating for kindness buys you a lot of of credit (with me at least), and the consequences of the mistakes she does make are dire enough that she isn't quite a messiah. I don't mind her being nice; that's why I didn't include teaching a goblin to be a tactician despite the explicitly referenced fact that could end up killing thousands of people as one of her mistakes; she didn't buy in to the "goblins are always chaotic evil" mindset and I think that's great. What I object to is that... well, I don't want to say she's an idiot, because I really don't think she is, but that the story seems bound and determined to make her act like one and that just makes it painful to read. I think paid webnovel writing is always going to have a similar payscale to things like actors or sports players (though for the immediate future much lower all around) - the "top" or at least most well known make far more than everyone else and the rest have to struggle to find a place. After all, writing a webnovel is the same amount of work for ten paying readers as a thousand paying readers, and while it would be nice to think the cream always rises to the top really it seems like it's as much about visibility as writing a better story. Normally you might think things would diversify, with authors splitting the audience with sci-fi, cultivation, litrpg, traditional fantasy, porn, whatever webnovels, but honestly I've kind of come to the conclusion most webnovel readers don't want something different, they just want a steady diet of decently written but broadly similiar stories, because they're familiar and comfortable. I guess I just didn't let that bother me because it was clearly set up as "after we graduate" and I didn't expect that to be a timeframe covered by the books, at least not anytime soon. The Villainess genre is kind of interesting since the original, or at least most well known, example was a parody where it's blatantly obvious the MC isn't in danger, and therefor it's left to some of the imitations to actually try playing it straight. Which is nice in my book. I liked My Next Life as a Villainess fine but it was really just the one joke, and I think it's interesting to see more serious takes on it. Yeah, I'd just send it in as fanart, not saying "oh here, you can use this as the cover for your book!" or anything. Even if it obviously looks like a book cover or something that's fine, it's like fans making fake movie posters or whatever.

Larry Parrish posted:I don't care about a school as a setting since there's a reason it's useful, but when it's just there and has not much to do with the actual plot or character development it feels like checking a box and is annoying. I like school settings! That said, I can't exactly disagree with the idea that at lot of them are clearly just copycatting everything.
