Some swimming pools don't allow you to wear short and you have to wear speedos, I think it's mostly a french thing, but why does that exist as a rule?

Shorts are sometimes very dirty because people wear them for all kinds of activities - sports, sitting on the ground, stuff like that. Sweat and grime from prolonged wearing are also an issue.

Is anyone else getting that "Woman is 53 but looks 27" ad on nearly every page? Not that matters much, I'm just curious I guess. It's got to be the most persistent banner ad I've seen around here.

I know that bananas release pheromones or whatever that make other nearby fruits ripen faster. But do the banana chemicals also make other bananas ripen faster? If I isolate bananas from each other, will they ripen slower than if they were in a bunch?

I think you might be thinking of the ethylene gas apples give off that cause bananas to ripen faster. Edit: Looks like bananas give it off too, and yes, the effects are cumulative between bananas and isolating them will cause them to ripen slower. A ripenening fruit gives off ethylene which causes it to ripen faster and give off more ethylene. Any fruit around this one will also be effected by the ethylene and will produce more and more themselves in a positive feedback loop. What's the deal with the Washington Post Social Reader app on Facebook? Is it meant to be lovely in effort to drive comments/likes, or is it actually just that bad? I feel like they're targeting the braindead dregs of the internet and if they are, props to them. If not, god help society. I'm just curious as to whether they're a trollsource or remotely legitimate. Are people just reading lovely stories and I'm seeing all trash on my newsfeed? Or is everything on that app basically trash? ZanderZ fucked around with this message at 22:54 on Aug 20, 2012 |

So I'm usually pretty aware of current slang/pop culture references, but I've been seeing people on Facebook say "lowkey" lately and it's bugging me that this is apparently a thing. I'm guessing it means sorta/kinda. There's an Urban Dictionary entry from 2010 that confirms this, and it even says it's from SoCal, but I'm from San Diego and have never heard this until today. Has this been around for awhile? I was out of the country last month, did some celeb start saying it lately? It's just so dumb and unnecessary, maybe that's what's getting to me.

"Low-key" has been around for a long time, and it generally means something is understated or subdued. It apparently springs from a specific high-contrast lighting effect in cinematography, which was popular in horror and film noir. Unless you are referring specifically to lowkey as a single word? I don't know who the gently caress started that.

Is anyone familiar with what a background check when starting a new job actually entails? I know they check your criminal record and what not. But what else do they check? Are they able to get information on what business licenses you've received if you started your own business?

I apologize if this is something there is a thread on, I looked in the Business/careers forum and couldn't find it. Anyways..... I'm working abroad and have a good, well paying job with good hours. However, I would love to continue studying and pick up my Masters. I've been trying to find information regarding online masters programs and have been able to find about 5 million websites that mention schools such as Heald or ITT Tech. Is there a thread here where I can get some information/first hand experience on the whole process of online masters programs and have people to talk about schools with? If not, does anyone here know of any places such information would be easily obtainable? I realize that online degrees from for-profit schools are going to be the name of the game, but I'd like to have a little more information before just blindly jumping in and wasting my time and money.

Anything in the public record (which includes just about everything financial) is potentialluy a part of it. If you have to be bonded, it will be a fairly exhaustive check, either by the company or the bonding agency.

Captain Payne posted:I know that bananas release pheromones or whatever that make other nearby fruits ripen faster. But do the banana chemicals also make other bananas ripen faster? If I isolate bananas from each other, will they ripen slower than if they were in a bunch? Answering the last question first, yes. Both tomatoes and bananas release a gas that makes them ripen, and also can be stimulated to be ripened by flooding them with that gas. Which is why you are not supposed to store tomatoes and bananas in the fridge (trapped gas) or in plastic. Which reason is also why they are also wrapped in plastic at the store (to make them ripen for sale). Bananas are picked when they are green and packed in evacuated containers for shipping, and then ripened at produce warehouses in big rooms especially designed to ripen them (and tomatoes). When the green bananas are gassed drunk tarantulas come staggering out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ripening

This lowkey business, could it be some kind of iPhone auto-correct mistake? I looked at some of those tweets and something about themmade me think it's a word being misspelt and then the spell checker loving it up.

I'm pretty sure 'lowkey' in this context is supposed to mean 'secretly.' Look at the Twitter feed: -i lowkey wana go back to school -I like this guy LOWKEY but he got a GF. Im tryna chill but the chemistry a1 lol ima POST!!! Im no HOME WRECKER -I feel like guys lowkey hate when their girlfriends screenshot & post their simp texts on social networks lol -Ppl Love Lies. They Lowkey Hate the Truth! -My mommy bought me a apron & cooking utensils she lowkey like my cooking. Replace it with 'secretly' and those all make sense. There are also a bunch of tweets using it as 'really' but I'm not convinced that those people aren't just really dumb.

Why are microwave ovens measured by volume? If I'm looking to get a new microwave, I want to know whether it will fit on my bench and how big of a thing I can fit inside it, and knowing that it's 3 litres doesn't tell me either of those things. So why not give the dimensions instead of the volume?

So why not give the dimensions instead of the volume? What? Knowing that it's 3 liters inside tells you exactly how much you can fit inside it. Also, in America at least, microwaves will be marked in the store or online both with the volume of the cooking compartment and the overall size of the microwave as a whole, for example:
