There is literally no place in the world you don't have a great health care system if you are rich. Might as well go somewhere where it's...less bureaucratically difficult...to get your hands on some organs.

While this is technically true, that is because in large parts of the world the health care plan for the rich is "fly to a country with better hospitals when you get sick." This is just since transplant availability is a special case where hospital quality doesn't matter if you can't get the organ, so the mobility of money doesn't take you where the care is best.

With chemical weapons the point is to deliver it in an aerosol form, so it spreads a good distance. Dumping barrels of the stuff really wouldn't do much.

At Halabja they dropped bombs from jets and used loitering helicopters to coordinate the attacks.

I'm kinda surprised that they don't just wait until they're out of sight of their base and then just toss it into a convenient lake.

Is this the same video that some sites (like Drudge) had listed as them parading his body like a trophy, or however they worded it at the time?

Lower those eyebrows, young man. And the other one.
Blessed Excrement is about right for the Helicopter exploding, but it is not the only aircraft to be reported going down today.

This one says it's over Hanano Aleppo, pretty sure it's an L-39.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW6eb3GsNjA&feature=plcp

One thing to keep in mind is that it would be exceedingly difficult to replace any of these loses, and every additional loss represents not just the single planes combat ability but increased wear and tear on the other airframes and diversion from air transport (here especially in the case of the Hips) that is the easiest way to move around the country. To maintain the same air combat tempo would require an ever increasing effort by dwindling resources that showballs as you get increasing mechanical write offs.

This is the same problem you will see with ground forces, but these are far fewer aircraft and their upkeep is even more pressing for operation. There is no way Assad can keep this up and a diminishing air threat is only going to increase the pressure on the ground forces.

Of curse maybe the Rebels have just had a spat of luck recently, but losing this many aircraft in rapid succession is going to cause more problems for the already stretched government forces.

In other news. A few days ago, some of you might know/recall, the rebels seized the town of Maarat al-Numan, which is a fairly major town sitting astride the major highway that runs N/S between Hama and Aleppo. It is not wrong to say this cuts off the largest supply route North. Thus far the rebels have repelled several major counter attacks and have even pushed out, cutting off a nearby Army base and intercepting military columns/convoys as far away as 10 miles to the south.

The Syrian Army has already had a problem controlling territory, if they can't blunt and turn back fresh rebel offenses they're going to have a really hard time of it really quickly.

Honestly, no it wasn't. Judging by the orange fireball it looks more like the fuel tanks ignited and blew up. Explosives detonating aren't nearly as visually impressive unless there's a huge amount involved (viz color footage of the battleship Arizona's magazine exploding). And by huge amount I mean more than a lovely Syrian Mil variant could carry even if the cargo bay was filled to capacity with C-4.

Difference is that Israel one of the USA's closest allies.
It's like it's government has absolutely no wish to reconcile and establish a peaceful state.

I know that there is a century of bad blood between Palestinians and Israelis but if anything that should encourage diplomatic aid by other countries to establish a lasting peace.

It would be a politically monumental move on the part of the country or group of countries that would stop this and, I am not exaggerating on this, it would most definitely be a giant leap in relations with the entire Muslim world.

Yeah, like I said earlier, if I had to guess the exact cause, a ZSU-type HE shell scored a direct hit on the fuel tank.

Israel is definitely a part of the problem in the Middle East. It's tough when such entrenched bitterness cross-culturally (which was completely different 100 years ago) in fact has no side with the moral high ground. Both sides of the Israel-Arab/Persian/Egyptian conflict have blame. But it's clear that the winds of change are blowing through the Arab world and hopefully it spreads to the Jewish one as well.

The FSA is really more of a brand name for the various rebel units than an actual army right now. I'd be interested to see details on how many of the rebel battalions they actually exercise any effective command and control over.

I actually think the decentralized nature of the rebellion favors them right now. I think the only real benefit to centralizing command and control of the rebels would be mollifying potential Western backers, and even if it happened tomorrow there's really no guarantee that this would result in sudden flood of weapons. For better or worse, it looks like the West is going to minimize their involvement for at least the next few months barring a sudden dramatic change in Syria or a really hard to ignore massacre (think thousands at once, not hundreds. Like Srebrenica)
