I'm always interested in how countries with conscription handle things. Or just foreign militaries in general.

Same here. It seems like you'd get a lot of really terrible soldiers who didn't want to be there if they were forced to join the army. Although if it's culturally accepted that everyone join that might not be the case.

Chrieger posted:Actually, is GIP interested in a thread about how service works in Switzerland? I'm not military, but reading about foreign armies is interesting as hell, so yes. I'm particularly interested in how well the conscription thing works, because the Swiss system is usually held up as an example of one that works really well.

There is no article, this story was related by a "guest speaker" at a safety standown. There were 4 guest speakers, all of whom were on some traveling "dont gently caress up like I did" speaking tour, each person relating a story more serious/intense than the last. The first guy was running a MDMA ring on the ship and got busted for DUI (message: you can get a DUI on substances other than alcohol). 2nd guy was an alcoholic nuke who snuck vodka onboard a sub in Aquafina bottles (message: being found drunk on watch 3 weeks into a sub deployment is not healthy for your career). 3rd was said Disbo losing thousands in a Email scam. (message: fraud, waste and abuse in the Navy is bad, you WILL be caught). Last was a (alledged) battered wife who stabbed the poo poo out of her husband like 47 times (there were never any official reports of abuse). (message: if your spouse likes to slap you around, get the bruises documented before you embark on a murder spree) Also: you underestimate the levels of retardedness that occurs in the military to believe that some idiot O-2 would never do something this dumb. When I was a lowly E3 on Kinser in Okinawa, we had a platoon Sgt that was desperate to be a high-speed lo-drag Killer of All Enemies Foreign and Domestic. Once we did a 'night patrol,' except that he couldn't get our rifles out of the armory. So we used rolled up sandbags and wandered through the small, basketball court-sized section of jungle on the base over and over. Okinawa has a problem with underage drinking, since the drinking age in Japan is 18. In the course of a year, we went from having no curfew, to 2 am, to midnight; as well as being about go to off base with a buddy, to only being allowed off base in groups of four (E-3 and below only). One night, our glorious NCO leaders decided that since there's a 2am curfew, everyone had to assemble in the commons room at 1 am, essentially making the curfew 12:30. One of my friends decided that was bullshit, so he started showing up in scuba gear. He was certified all the way to the top of the scuba hierarchy, so he could dive alone and at night. After the second night where he walked in dripping seawater, they stopped with their bullshit formations. VV should have clarified; the policy of our NCO's to ruin everything is the idiot in this story. Self-important NCO's are the worst, and Okinawa is infested with them. red19fire fucked around with this message at 20:15 on Feb 16, 2013 |

Met an Austrian conscript in a bar just the other day who told me about how he, on border duty, would single out Dutch vehicles and scare them shitless with rifle pointed at them, just because he hated duty. He also told me he was far from the only one doing it. :/

Okay, I was on staff duty the other day, and picked up a winner. Seems that a certain schools NCO got into a little bit of grief. This is just before 4 dudes on extra duty - all with less than 12 days until they ETS'd - got caught smoking spice in the barracks WHILST on extra duty. This NCO was having a bit of drinky drinky at his place with some buddies, playing pool. What can go so far wrong when you are in a house playing pool? Well, apparently dude argues with one of his invited buddies over something pool related. Punches his buddy in the face. Buddy retaliates and lays him the gently caress out, apparently kicked his rear end solidly. The buddy now tries to leave, but this NCO is having none of it. To even the score he grabs a gun, and then shoots his buddy, thankfully failing to kill him. I'm pretty sure there is a lot of paperwork to be done for that one. Now the going joke is that the schools NCO should've scheduled himself in for some combatives classes, or some marksmanship courses.

My supervisor ran into the ghost of retards past last week. Josh was a moron who thankfully decided not to reenlist back in late 2009, and nobody in our shop, or all of Comm for that matter, can stand him so no one had the slightest idea what became of him. I feel kind of bad for being as annoyed with him as I am, he's probably somewhere on the high functioning end of the autism spectrum, and would be a thousand times easier to get along with if he got some therapy to deal with some of his issues. I got far too much exposure to him one summer when we shared a room while on a TDY. He spent hours every morning and night arguing with his fat psycho wife one the phone and probably would have kept it up at work if it hadn't been a remote location where you couldn't get cell service 97% of the time. One morning he informed me that even though we could both agree on the classic rock station for the hour commute into work each morning, he wanted to listen to Nickleback that morning and that was final. I jokingly asked him if he wanted to be a prepubescent girl too, and he really flipped out. Angrily telling me that they are not a generic band, I don't know anything about music, and that he'd been following them since 1997 "When they were just a bar band!". All of this while I attempted to make it clear that I don't really have that strong of an opinion about Nickleback, and it was just a joke. Then something magical happened, and he stopped talking to me, for the rest of the day which was conspicuous as we worked together most of the time, spent a couple hours stuck in a truck together everyday, and roomed together. He also loves arguing about stupid poo poo, so the cold shoulder was amazingly refreshing. Anyway, as much as he bitched during his time in the air guard it was probably the best thing he had going for himself, not so good for the rest of us since he's essentially the antithesis of public service in human form, but it probably went a long way towards saving him from himself for 6 years. From what my supervisor managed to learn during an awkward 10 minute conversation with him at a beer fest was that in 2010 he made the best decision he could have possibly made and divorced his wife , unfortunately good sense didn't stick around for long, and they've just gotten back together and might remarry. He apparently works at an AM radio station now writing commercials, and supposedly fixing that transmitter.

Just heard this story from a coworker of mine who went golfing with one of our new airmen last weekend: Their foursome had just teed off on the 3rd hole and were walking down the fairway when the fiscally irresponsible new airman tells them to hold up and let people play through. He runs off to the pro shop, and comes back a few minutes later with a brand new driver. Right after he tees off on the 4th, he pauses, looks around, and says, "Anyone want to buy a new driver? I just realized my speeding ticket is due and I spent the last of my paycheck on this club." This was on Sunday, 2 days after payday. This kid is never going to be allowed to move out of the dorms, that is, unless getting kicked out for allowing his quad in the dorms to become the party room, complete with beer pong table, smoke machine, and underage roommate counts as moving out.

A school NJP shenanigans: Piss hot, and while being escorted to Mast by MAC, requests to use the head. Then disappears. Returns exactly 29 days later, and actually makes it to Mast. But decides that he is above it. Tells all present "I refuse to recognize your authority over me", and does a casual about face in front of the CO. Since he is underage, booze is out. Even more so, since on restriction. During a restricted muster, alcohol smell on breath leads to locker inspection. Minibar discovered along with mirror, razor blade and white powder. Attempts to argue vehemently that they have no legal right to confiscate said contraband.
