Crowdfunding Transparency. One project to help them all

This guy wants $16,000. $10,000 for a website(his friend is a web developer). $1,440 for a 400 slot Ventrilo server(I can think of no better way to discuss crowdsourcing projects than a conference call with 399 other people). And the rest for a video camera to make hilarious videos about the possible pitfalls of crowdsourcing.

In case you didn't already guess, it's indiegogo and flexible funding.

What are we supposed to do, sit tight and cross our fingers that it won't happen again? The coverage I've seen surrounding this has been overwhelmingly negative; the only people who could possibly come away from reading an article condemning this with an impression of it all being an overreaction are folks who've already made up their minds about women being subhuman.

The thing I mostly don't get about this roach thing is how many people could realistically use it? You're pretty much restricted to places where those bigass roaches live, and on top of that, how does the attachment procedure work? I'm assuming you'd need tiny tweezers, scalpels and a magnifying glass or something. I don't see how this kit is practical outside of a laboratory.

That said, I don't see these homebrew kits producing useful data or having a practical purpose. Is anyone who orders one of these really going to advance the technology or use it in a meaningful way? If it's just a toy that requires mutilating an animal to use, they leave me feeling queasy too.

And despite all that it's not outside of the realm of possibility that he'll reach the porn stretch goal. Oi.

http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/fredrin/megatokyo-visual-novel-game/

Oh there is a distinct possibility he'll get 500k by the end of the thing. Even though Kicktraq overestimates by a mile because of early interest, the average daily interest is still really high. If it maintains $15k a day, it'll end extremely close to the 500k mark. If Gallagher does it right and starts creating higher tiers with exclusive physical goods, he can maintain that pace. That Kingdom of Death KS did exactly this and basically fed upon the initial 1200+ backers it got within the first two days. Very clever way to keep the KS total rising steadily.

Also, if it maintains that rate, it'll probably get a sharp last-minute push to get it over the edge once people realize HEY WE CAN GET PORN IN OUR MEGATOKYO'S IF WE DONATE ANOTHER $50K.

I honestly really hope it gets past $500k, just because Gallagher is probably the worst webcomic artist/writer when it comes to delivering on promises and creating content at a timely rate. He will gently caress it up, repeatedly, for years and years as he slowly grinds away at it. The only hope it has of getting done on time is everyone else associated with the project working with him. Unfortunately, all his parts are shared with at least one extra person, so when (not if) he inevitably flakes, someone else can carry the project forward without him.

For the time being, watching him flail about trying to create Stretch Goals that he clearly never had thought out properly is hilarious. Oh, part 3 you say? Where this godforsaken comic finally comes to an end? And only at $150k? He really doesn't want this thing to get to $500k, hahahahhaah.

Ostensibly it's at the same level as a home chemistry kit in that, it's unlikely any new advances will come out of it, and the amount of entertainment will sharply decline after the first use, but it seems like a cool thing to give anyone interested in science that doesn't mind handling cockroaches.

Project aside, the flat wage of $15 an hour for all the art assets seems on the low side, or are artists expected to earn barely above minimum wage? As does assigning ten hours to do ALL the sound design, music and recording. I guess at least they've got a detailed breakdown, though "coding, $30,000" seems a bit loving broad.
