Warriors? Try workers and great generals.

To be fair creating a good but not perfect AI in a game like this with so many factors to consider is probably not the easiest task since they can't just stack endless units anymore.

Managed to create a Mecca of Tourism in my latest emperor game. Anyone ever calculated what's the max possible tourism for one city?

One of the things I love about this game (coming from someone who played Civ 3 to death, but barely touched 4) is that I'm being forced to use ranged units. I used to totally ignore archers, catapults etc., but now I have to think about them and base my strategy around them. It's really changed the game to be a whole new experience.

Considering it also adds culture from world wonders and improvements, that's a difficult question to answer. I'll cheese my way through a France game real quick and give you an estimate.

I don't think i ever got promotions in vanilla because wars were over too quick. It was like the AI wasn't aware that you were at war with them.

I still think Civ3's Puppet Strings is the most egregious.

It really was exactly that bad. It was like they were still playing stack combat, and would often try to attack you with a single tile army - rather than building up a force, they'd just have their cities produce stuff and send it at you in a slow, single-file stream, like ninjas in a kung fu movie. It made the game really laughably easy to the point where I actually stopped playing it at all until Brave New World came out!

Way too late into the game I realized the Assyria is a civ that you have to start crazy strong as, leveraging your Siege Towers and/or your Royal Libraries into as much of a headstart as possible so you can abuse that early advantage and turn it into a game-long one.

...Or you can be like me, realize you're sharing a continent with Attila, panic, charge violently at him as soon as you have siege towers, defeat him, annex all 3 of his cities and end with such a happiness and gold deficit by the time you're out of it, it's the middle ages, and three turns later you meet China who is A) In the Modern Age B) Owns two continents.

I'm guessing I should have either puppeted or razed Attila's cities? :saddowns:

Am I the only one who thinks the Courthouse is an odd building choice for what it does? I assume It's implying it helps prosecute "Dissidents" but this isn't really the first purpose I imagine it for.

Hey, that's a pretty good name compared to labeling cultural influence as "tourism". I can't even imagine what possessed someone to think that was a good naming choice.

I'm currently playing a game on a Mac, and it seems Writer and Musician specialists don't get the +1 Production from Statue of Liberty (but the Artists do, and they all get the +2 Science from Secularism). Could someone check if this is also the case in Windows?

Immortal is the point when the AI bonuses to everything get so high that keeping up with them gets a lot more difficult, especially if there's a runaway AI on some other continent for example. They also start with an extra warrior, an extra worker (with a 75% work rate bonus compared to Emperor's 50%) and an extra tech (Mining) compared to Emperor which gives them a much faster start.

The leap is pretty obvious when you look at the bonuses. For example moving from King to Emperor means the AI construction requirement goes from 85% to 80%. However moving from Emperor to Immortal drops that from 80% to 65% which is a very noticeable difference. Since the AI always plays on Chieftain meaning they only require 67% production in the first place, you have a really tough time keeping up without a very good starting location or a very aggressive strategy.

I don't think it's that weird. Maybe they could do better but the implication just seems to be people are visiting your cities, are dazzled by what they see, and come back and tell all their friends about it.

How do I re base aircraft? I've done it before on a different play-through, but it simply isn't working now. I click the rebase icon and left click other nearby cities(I get the orange circle), but that just doesn't do anything. Am I missing something?

Yeah, the important thing to remember on numbers like that is 85% to 80 is a 6% difference. 80 to 65 is almost a 20% difference.

Deity takes another huge jump because they start with a second settler which is obnoxious as hell. I hate that.

There's a max range to rebase, just look for cities with an orange highlighted hex. If there isn't one, there's no city in range.

Are there any good, general beginner guides out there, like the civfanatics war academy for Civ4? The war academy for Civ5 seems to just be high-end guides or civ-specific ones.

I found Let's Play videos to be the most helpful. Of course full games take a long-rear end time, so I'd often just watch the first video of a Let's Play series since I felt like learning how to set yourself up for success in the early game was the most important part.

I like this guy a lot on Youtube. He's good at explaining what he does. Most of his videos are from G&K multiplayer games, but he has some new videos up where he plays on Deity as the Shoshone and as Brazil.

Tried rebasing to cities just 3 tiles away and it still didn't work. There was an orange circle.

edit: Okay it just started working, even though I'm not doing anything differently. Strange.

In the late game cities look a bit bigger and sometimes you have to make sure you're clicking on the actual hex and not outside of it or on the city name.

So, as an answer, game with France:
- All Wonders built (not just Great Works ones);
- No Landmarks or Chateaus near the city, only some settled Prophets and Engineers;
- Full theming bonus for every building.

Immortal is also, for me, the point where I go from being able to pull ahead and control the direction of the game to having to be more reactive and respond to how the AIs shape it, unless I get stupidly lucky like my current Spain game (first to the Great Barrier Reef = two free settlers before turn 50). You have to play ball with the AI and make moves to stop them from growing out of control, unlike on Emperor where you can do whatever independently of what the AI is doing and just brute force it. It's really not the same game.

What's with the AIs doing stupid declarations of war? I just had Venice declare war on me for no apparent reason, and alone mind you. I'm at peace with everyone else. Venice is way behind tech and culture, and only has 2 cities (I thought the limit was 1?). I've had similar declarations of war as well, and often times they will give me luxury items in exchange for peace before a single battle is fought.

I was playing a really enjoyable game, was in the middle of defending myself from some warmongers in 1700, but the game froze out. I reloaded the autosave and it just freezes when I hit next turn at the same point. Is there any way of recovering this game?

Likely they're being paid to go to war by someone else. And Venice gets new cities by puppeting City States with their unique Great Merchant (or by the usual conquest).

As Austria, a city state gifted me a Merchant of Venice. Which was nice because it saved me the money for diplomatic marriage.

Austria is fun in BNW. The cofeehouse UB on top of all the other ways to generate great people via world congress and such makes them a gp machine. And with trade routes you can use diplomatic marriages like Vienna uses their merchant: find a city-state that's in the crossroads of a whole bunch of different civs and use it as a trading hub for massive gold.

So, nooby question: do you already know which victory condition you're gonna try in the first turn? Because i spend the first 60-70 (even 100) turns without knowing it. Obviously not if I go for domination, but going for diplomacy/culture/science victory gets a little blurry for me :/

I think most people just go with the flow, only experienced players plan their gameplay ahead. However, the civilization you choose will certainly have a lot of influence on which direction you go. If you're Venice, for example, you probably won't be dominating anybody.

I'd say fairly early. When I first start the game I'm mostly about getting a lay of the land to plan my expansion and research tech that will let my worker improve the nearby resources. So that's mostly the first two tiers of tech. After that I stay at the top of the tree if I'm going culture/science or middle if I'm focusing on gold/trade or bottom if I just want to kill everyone. But plans can change as I find out how much space I have and who my neighbors are.

I usually have an idea of what victory I'm going for when I start the game, but adapt accordingly depending on what wonders I get, what kind of terrain I'm in, what kind of neighbors I have, what the landmass I'm on is like. And like Ervin K said most Civs are best suited to a certain kind of victory, and civs usually have a certain period when they are particularly strong. I'm sure you could nab a domination victory as Brazil or France but they're really rather geared for a culture win, etc.
