I'd be more descriptive but I'm away from the computer I did this on myself.

Man, I am never as big an rear end in a top hat as when I play Ashurbanipal. The siege towers and tech-stealing are just two too-good things to let to go to waste with regard to conquering everyone early. I can wipe out two civs by turn 115. ...and completely piss off everyone else in the game forever, but, hey, their problem.

This game is god damned amazing (I've only put around 10 hours into it, but I've really enjoyed it so far), but so far I keep resetting around 1000 BC as I think to myself "Hmm, well now that I understand how X works a little better, I should restart the game with that new information in mind." I still have no idea how faith works. I've read and re-read the description, and maybe I am dumb, but I can't wrap my head around how it works, exactly?

Fly McCool posted:I still have no idea how faith works. I've read and re-read the description, and maybe I am dumb, but I can't wrap my head around how it works, exactly? Faith is used to generate a religion. There's only two buildings (and some wonders, but don't worry about that yet) that can generate faith points, the shrine and the temple. The sooner you generate faith, the easier it will be to start a religion. The later you start, the longer it takes. First up will be the "pantheon," basically, an old-world proto-religion that will spread to your initial cities when you found them. Pantheons are not intended to help you through the whole game, but make the early game easier in some way. The first pantheon in the world only takes ten faith points to form, but when it does get formed, the runner-up will need to generate 15 faith points to get his pantheon, and so on. You can only select one "belief" and if someone else took a belief you can't choose it. Religion is very much a "firsties!" game within this game. After the pantheon, you need to generate a Great Prophet. The tooltip when you hover your mouse over the faith icon will tell you how much you need. Once you hit the threshold, you will (usually, but not always) generate a Great Prophet, which sucks up all your current faith points (it's usually 200 for the first one, 300 for the second one, etc). Great Prophets do three things: start a religion, spread your religion around four times, or create a faith-generating Holy Site structure on the ground. For the first Great Prophet you definitely want to just expend him on making a religion. Then it's time to select your founder belief and your follower belief. Founder beliefs are what you, the founder, get for spreading your religion far and wide, like increased income due to Tithe or more happiness. Follower beliefs are benefits that exist in any city the religion is spread to, including enemy cities. When you generate a second Great Prophet, you can expend him to enhance your religion to have a second follower belief and an "enhancer belief" that makes your religion easier to spread around in some way. What do you spend Faith on at this point? Typically, Missionaries, who start out at 200 faith a pop but get more expensive in later technological epochs. (You purchase them from the same menu that you'd use to gold-buy units in a city menu). They just help spread religion around, so you get more for your founder belief. Spreading religion around has other tangential benefits: your influence with city-states degrades slower if they believe what you believe, and your tourism goes up with foreign nations if you have a common religion. If you chose certain other beliefs you can also spend faith on certain religious buildings like Pagodas that give you extra faith, culture and happiness, or if you chose Holy Warriors, you can spend faith on buying military units. Late in the game, once you hit the industrial era, you can spend faith on buying Great People if you've completed certain policies. Maxing out Tradition lets you buy Great Engineers with faith, for example. Typically you're going to need several cities and be on the good side of religious city-states if you want to generate a lot of faith regularly.

Since we're on religion, why does the AI have a hardon for Goddess of Protection(+30% city ranged strength I think)? The last dozen games I've played, without fail that has been the first AI pick. Playing on emperor now if that makes a difference.

I have to admit, with the addition of trade routes and the council, late game has become more interesting. In vanilla games, my roommate used to just bitch when I left him behind after the industrial age and won the game without him being able to to a thing to me, now he is just busy being a dick by plundering my routes and trying to embargo me. The hybrid turn system is also genius. Is there any other game that has tried something like that?

Certain pantheons are really good to just take, even if you have no further plans to have a religion- examples of these would be Desert Folklore, Religious Idols and Goddess of Festivals (if you have appropriate tiles) as the latter two will provide you extra culture and faith early on, even before you have the technology and workers available to improve the tiles. Bonus points for settling on top of a gold tile. If you don't want to found a religion, it's probably still a good idea to be generating some faith as purchasing great engineers and scientists with faith can net you a quick wonder or significant tech bulb assuming you've finished tradition and rationalism. Additionally if the AI beelines for Jesuit Education (as they often do) and then spreads it to you, well that's pretty much best case scenario: You'll get the benefit of being able to buy the key science buildings for cheap faith without having to invest 5 social policies into the piety tree.

Fly McCool posted:I still have no idea how faith works. I've read and re-read the description, and maybe I am dumb, but I can't wrap my head around how it works, exactly? Speedball gave a good summary above, but basically Faith is a resource like gold that you use to buy stuff. The basic way to get them is from Shrines and Temple buildings, which basically slowly convert gold to faith. Other ways are religious city states, some world wonders, and a few natural wonders. Usually the first thing you'll buy will be a pantheon, which is a proto-religion and most of them give bonuses to tile yields. God of the Hunt gives +1 food from camps, God of the Sea is +1 production from fishing boats, Desert Folklore is +1 faith from desert tiles, etc. There are a few exceptions to this like a pantheon that gives a bonus to wonder building, but most of them are tile yields. Generally you'll look at the land around you and pick the pantheon that gives you the best bonus. After that, you can buy a great prophet with faith to found a religion, or wait for someone to spread their religion to you; the max number of religions is capped at half the total players, so not every civilization will have a religion. Waiting for someone to spread their religion to you will replace your pantheon with theirs, though, which is usually less useful than the one you picked. Once you have a religion you can faith-buy missionaries and inquisitors for that religion, as well as other things based on the religion's beliefs. Religions are made up of various beliefs, many of which involve faith. Some let you purchase specific buildings, like cathedrals or pagodas, with faith; others increase the amount of faith you produce, like one that gives +2 faith from every world wonder. Again, if you're founding a religion you usually pick the ones most useful to you, but I generally recommend trying to balance faith production with faith expenditures; if you pick Pagodas and Holy Warriors for your religious beliefs you're going to have trouble finding enough faith to spend, whereas if you pick two beliefs for increased faith production you'll have nothing to do but produce missionaries to convert other nations (which can be good if you have a belief that gives you bonuses from other cities following your religion, but that's a specific strategy). If you have multiple religions in different cities, each city can use faith in ways appropriate to its religion. Things change a little in the Industrial Era, when you get the ability to buy great people with faith based on social policies, and totally apart from religions. Their cost increases with each purchase, but I believe they don't count towards Great Person Points costs in cities, so it's a nice bonus if you've got nice faith generation.

True, it's kinda annoying when people just want to raid some caravans or protect their city states from economic takeover, but for actual player vs. player combat I prefer it over simultaneous turns. Though I can imagine it being a complete slog with more than two people getting involved. Allowing you to at least check your cities or browse some info would be nice, but personally I just alt-tab and post or something while waiting.

Was gifted a Merchant of Venice as Spain. Thought about cashing him in for sweet stacks of gold but then I remembered that Geneva had the Great Barrier Reef in its workable radius. Found out that not only does Spain double the Natural Heritage Sites bonus but that each tile of the Great Barrier Reef gets it. Hello, 2x +4 Food|+2 Hammer|+2 Gold|+4 Science|+10 Culture tiles. The Patronage tree is like playing the lottery. Dumping policies into anything else probably would've been a smarter choice until that merchant popped up.

Is there a diplomatic modifier for snatching another factions capital? Greece went to war with me abruptly over almost nothing and I immediately ripped out the heart of his land because I was like "Hey, wonders AND a his big city. Sup Athens!" Then he sued for peace. Now he and Arabia are being huge jerks and name calling, etc. Is them calling me a city-state an insult based on a specific thing of mine (size, army, what have you)? e; Also drat the AI running puppet cities is dumb as hell. I mostly play Epic because with civs with early unique units, like the Celts' Pictish Warriors or the Huns' Horse Archers, you have more opportunity to take advantage of them before they're outclassed. It also doesn't punish you as much for not building your city immediately when you spawn.

I've tried the supposedly slower settings. They ain't. Because all the costs are upscaled-culture, research, unit cost, worker time to improve, etc, you spend the same amount of general time with the same amount of units and you don't actually spend 'more' time with those units.

I think I kind of see what you mean. It takes the same amount of time to make the individual units, so it looks like it's a wash then.

My favorite thing about playing on standard is that a war started in the ancient or classical period may well take a thousand or more years to prosecute. Hundreds of years for positioning and combat!
