There's a rash of secessionist crap going around now that the Republicans lost their fight against the debt limit increase and Obamacare, my uncle just shared this awful crap:quote:THERE ARE TWO AMERICA'S AND THEY CANNOT CO EXIST! I got A and B mixed up when I first read this so I first thought it was some secessionist crap, but it's actually some Civil War 2 crap. I responded with "Gerrymandering doesn't exist! The people who live in each district agree 100% with their elected congressperson!" and he liked it, so MAYBE he isn't advocating for civil war and violent subjugation of all the people he doesn't like.

"Tearing it down" is not only some libertarian fantasy for people within the US, it'd basically destroy the global economy as we know it along with it. I'm not endorsing the status quo, but that we've sort of trapped ourselves in a position where we cant just say "Revolution" and all will be well.

Even though it's misleading to compare between countries, as someone pointed out, it seems so blatantly clear that enormous numbers of people are just completely hosed over, and I don't understand anyone who fails to either notice or care.

Simply: humans are bad at statistics. I know so many people who think they can become that 1% one day so they dont want their future earnings to be taxed. Of course theres 2 absurd parts about that, the first being that statistically the odds of earning your way to the 1% is almost 0, and second even if you taxed them a little more you'd still make so much goddamn money, is ignored by the same problem: People cannot fathom the math behind those numbers.

Nor the idea that inflation will more than most likely make it such that, even if they ever do make the salaries they dream about now, those figures will probably only be a comparatively tiny boost in wage all those years later.

Oh boy! I was feeling so left out lately, what with my direct family being relatively sane when it comes to lovely political opinions (aside from one minor hiccup with "HEALTHCARE IS A PRIVILEGE" and some general anti-welfare bitching that is beyond fixing). But for some reason today, half my goddamn family tree decided to start tagging each other in posts and sharing the wisdom of our prophet, Archie Bunker, spliced together with various speeches made by Obama to make them real zingers. The video in question. I really hope this doesn't become A Thing, because holy hell is that audio quality giving the content a run for its money.
