Heh. So it turns out their HQ it was not exactly wrong about their being another DHCP server. There was. The linux box running their eDir had DHCP running that they claimed had been removed already. A ticket came into the help desk that a district office's avaya phones had been down for 2 days. They kept trying to call random network guys and were pissed that no one was picking up. Telling them it took them 2 days to figure out the proper procedure to report the issue was great.

A ticket came in (at 4:56PM):quote:*Newguy* & *worthlessdirector* Yesterday at noon, new guy emails me asking if there are any systems that he can replace it with. I tell him that I set up an Optiplex 980 for her some time ago, but that she said she was too busy at the time. I then told her to let me know when it would be convenient for me to swap it out for her. Never heard back from her. I then told him that it was sitting on my shelf with all of her programs already installed and that it should probably just be hooked up and have updates installed then it could be delivered. Unsurprisingly, it's still sitting on the shelf and he's out Monday, so now my co-worker is going to have to take care of it (I'm swamped with a ton of other poo poo). ^^ We use McAfee at work and it's loving terrible. It tends to block legit installs quite often, yet allows infections. I've ended up having to scan systems with Windows Defender Offline in order to disinfect them.

Was reading through the previous thread and remembered an OS upgrade problem I had a couple weeks back. One of our clients is a small local clinic/medical group, and they use Zetafax for a lot of their documenting and transferring into their clinic apps. One of the doctors, in his infinite wisdom, decided to go ahead and upgrade the tablet he was using to Windows 8 without asking or telling anyone, and suddenly had problems with Zetafax. After I did some research, I found Win8 isn't compatible with their version of Zetafax, so in order to be compatible and "future-proof", I get with my teammate and one of our sales people, and we get a quote over for upgrading Zetafax. They approve, we schedule a time to go on site, because it'll most likely be an all day thing with upgrading the server side first, then getting all the user machines updated. Additionally, they've got a list of usernames for Zetafax, but aren't sure what people are using which usernames, since a few people have left the clinic and others just randomly swap names when one doesn't work. So, I get out on site, and immediately go to the server room to get the server upgrade done - it goes smoothly, everything is licensed, all good to go. I go back out to find users that need upgrading, and start the tedious process of getting the client update done and finding the user IDs that people are using so I can update our list. I get all that done, everyone is good, the list is mostly complete outside 2 or 3 people who are out of the office, and I can call back later to get those done remotely. I meet with the doctor who upgraded to Win8, his client is working fine...but he explains that he usually doesn't work with Zetafax locally, he's got a session to the term server where he runs Zetafax. A term server that has Server 2003 R2 and was compatible with their old version of Zetafax. All their other machines are Win7 and were fine with the old version of Zetafax too. We basically spent all that time doing an upgrade to be compatible with Win8, and found out the doofus who upgraded wasn't even using his Win8 machine to connect to Zetafax, he was using Zetafax through a remote session and it worked perfectly fine.

I can't even tell you how many times i ask for approval on stuff and just get an email back saying 'Denied, PCI'. Anybody else have to be PCI compliant. Has to do with credit card info etc. Also, to whomever said use a GPO to run the silent install. The machines i'm hitting have already had this run to them, but if the computer is installing windows updates at the same time this runs, it breaks the Trend install. So i have to run this crazy script to uninstall all the reg keys and file folders, and then run it manually. Hey at least it's Monday! *edit - I'm sure there's easier ways to do this stuff. But i really have no time inbetween our 50 case backlog and all the servers i maintain to learn anything. Just flying around by the seat of my pants. I've been asking for a SP site to start a KB for our team, but that keeps getting denied too.

In this case, you would tell your auditor "We deployed XXXXXXXX application with PDQ Deploy which typically deals with credit card information, but we created the installer to only store the installation key, and no credit card details are stored in the package. On top of that, we've set the installation options to never store any details, ensuring that PCI compliance is maintained, rather than potentially being in non-compliance by a manual install that selects the wrong options."
