Technically its kinda true, if the game makes you lose pixels on death , all its done is make you lose more time to have to grind it back. honestly I think its better to reward a player for staying alive longer then punishing for dying, because punishing just dicks over players who aren't very good at the game to begin with and could use those pixels to buy more items/gear to survive longer.

In more interesting news. Omni is apparently working on making weapons (spears at least) able to attack in different directions. So far it looks like it can attack in 45 degree increments based on mouse position.

Here is the official rules regarding it:

Chucklefish Advert Rules posted:

Added:

1-point offenses:

Advertising: Do not post links to commercial services or ask for donations. The exception to this is for Starbound game mod releases; you are allowed to have one instance of a PayPal donation link per mod release thread, however you are not allowed to use any click-through advertising services (e.g. AdFly) or similar services. This includes masking these links to avoid the filters put in place to prevent these types of links.

3-point offenses:

Repeated Advertising or Masked Advertising Links: If you are found to continue actions from the "Advertising" section under 1 point offenses above, you will receive an additional 3 warning points. You will also receive 3 warning points if you are found to be masking click-through advertising services links. Further violations will result in either a month-long ban or a permanent ban.

For reference, a 3 point infraction results in a 3 day ban, 5 points is a one month ban.

This is such a reasonable approach, I don't understand why the rest of the MC modding community can't accept something like this. Oh wait greed.

Also given the highly randomized nature of this game, coupled with the dodgy framerate in combat, there have been very few deaths where I could concretely say "Yeah, that was entirely my fault." I'm thankful, then, that the death penalty is relatively minimal.

Eventually Terraria just let you decide what you want your death penalty to be (from "Nothing at all" all the way to "Lose everything.") I could see that working here, too.

Changelog for v. Annoyed Koala 5/12/2013

- HUGE balance patch, every item, creature, armor and weapon rebalanced. Leveling system entirely rewritten
Although the balance is early the new leveling system, the system is much better than the old one and we can now improve balance over time.
- Added early implementation of creature taming (more features coming soon)
- Added new mining items
- Added new weapons
- Added new throwable items
- Added grappling hook
- Added new boss and new sector of the galaxy
- Added a stance system to weaponry, not currently used but will allow us to add secondary attacks to weaponry very soon.
- Tons of new sounds
- Guns more common in tier 3
- Underground detached/rare biomes more common
- Underground random encounters more common
- Underground chests more common
- Ore rebalance (probably way way too much ore at the moment, will be fixed later, enjoy it)
- Baby monsters
- New monster palettes
- Added pixel compressor for high cost banking (idea from Ncrpts)
- Disable using the beamaxe to light caves underground
- Added new hats
- some monsters now graze on grass (can look ugly, needs finishing)
- Small bipeds now socialise with eachother
- All the monsters behave smarter and are less likely to get stuck
- You can no longer attack through blocks
- Fix the game on XP (hopefully)
- Tons more fixes and smaller additions

Yes and no. I think this game must have compatibility issues with...something I'm running. That's the kind of thing a Beta exists to root out and fix, so I'm still calling this as an issue on the development side.

Future developments can and likely will fix that concern, but I was talking about the game as it is now.

No, you're right, they think they do for whatever stupid reason. Or you get some people, who will not be named, that have found that if they just release enough "updates" a week and force everyone to download the latest versions, they can milk a few pennies here and there.

Actually softcore on terraria has you loose money on death, on mediumcore you loose all items except for the items on your hotbar, on hardcore your character is deleted

softcore is what we have now on starbound... the biggest difference is that you don't drop your pixels when you die and items decay extremely fast.

I hope they keep it as a "45-degree increments" system instead of just Terraria-style freeform. It's much easier to build good game mechanics around something like that. Compare Mount & Blade and their very limited directional attacking system. For example, it looked like there was something about parrying in the code at some point, and that'd work way better with 8-way attacks than freeform ones.

Right, except that money is largely useless except for min-maxing in Terraria (you can beat Plantera and the Golem with even the shittiest modifiers on your gear), while it's absolutely vital to progression in Starbound (weapons and armor take pixels to craft).

One time, I did a thing.
Corpse surfing cannot be prevented unless rare materials only spawn deep below ground in places you cannot teleport out of and you drop your material inventory on death.

You can just spend your pixels on scanning miscellaneous poo poo, die a bunch getting shittons of rare materials in a tougher-than-me system, then go farm pixels somewhere safe. Assuming that's faster(or more fun) than just building through the tiers as intended, that's what people will be tempted to do.

edit: Wood no longer being a fuel but coal remaining a fuel is dumb. They both just burn, unless somebody's gonna give me some poo poo about extracting the naturally occurring fissiles in coal, in which case give me a god drat coal-->uranium extractor.

You also didn't regain all the money you actually dropped if you somehow got back to it in time, so you could recover some of your cash, but not all. Unless they changed this in later parts, money was goddamn worthless in that game outside like, one thing.
