It'll be best if you were to go down to the surface and find the effects of something like an asteroid shower rather than it actually happen during gameplay.

A whole bunch of later sector ores totally replace coal/wood because they're everywhere and worth a ton of fuel. Plutonium/Uranium/Solarium etc

I'm hoping they stabilize mod changes in the coming patches, so that they don't require a lot of editing in the future. I'm sure once they move to .pak files that'll be different, but as it stands once Bartwe's patch for merges is thrown in things should be okay for a while.
I'm looking forward to these planetary hazards, just so long as we get updated scanner info soon, too. I remember in the mock-ups, you could scan a planet for info like "Avian settlement detected" or "large deposits of silver found", or what have you. Hopefully we'll see that soon.

Eventually you'd reach a point where it'd take more than 1000 fuel to get to a place even if the universe is technically infinitely generate-able, and you can circumvent that by making multiple stops at plants if you really want to but past that it's almost certainly not worth it.
Where did they ever say longer distances require more fuel? They sure as hell don't now.

The only way I've been able to download anything from that site for the past few days is to spam f5 on the error page until it finally gives me a download. It works, but you have to be a little patient.

My recommendation is to build an axe and chop down trees. 10 wood pieces is a coal if you put it in the furnace, and you can get a lot of pieces of wood from just one tree. Its (solid) black gold, growing right up into the sky!

Trees are generally worth 3-5 coal a piece. It's definitely the easiest starship fuel in Alpha Sector. I felt that in Beta and beyond, coal was plentiful enough while mining that I could ignore trees unless I actually needed the wood.

Oh, and I reduced the head size of all of the armors since they were a bit on the big side. here's a comparison:

Pretty sure this already exists. IIRC you edit your starbound.config and change "useDefaultWorldCoordinate" : false to true and then it spawns everyone at the coordinates set by the "defaultWorldCoordinate" value.

Make sure to mark your planet as home or remember the coordinates. You can also just travel to other planets in the same system (if any) by clicking on them.

Thanks for the tip, i know about the "melting wood makes coal" process but was saving my wood for some interior re-design on my ship, floran style and haven't found that many ships. Guess i will have to burn the wood after all, seems to be more surface obsidian than sand on this desert planet. :(

You can do that, generally you need 200 fuel unless you're already in the system. That's 100 coal or 1000 smelted wood or some combination.

You can also put in co-ordinates that have been posted/added to compilation documents, it'll generate a planet using the same random seed so it's similar, with the same features.

I really hope that they add in more efficent axes to cut trees down with. It's weird to be running around with a diamond pickaxe and yet still have a stone axe. Also, faster mining would be nice, even with a diamond pickaxe it takes forever to dismantle structures.

The thing is, once you get out of the initial sector, coal will be so plentiful, and you will have so many trees around that you'll have plenty of fuel. Also keep in mind that the fuel cost is much less for traveling within a star system. It only costs 200 fuel once you move out of the system. So what you can do is find a star system that has a bunch of forest planets and you should be good.

Another good idea for people who want coal or whatever is to find a desert (or maybe even arid?) planet and start mining any sand/gravel you see. When it comes loose, any ore in it does as well and you can easily scoop it up.

I don't think this is true. I hardly got any coal in Beta Sector, and barring Jungle planets the tree count is about the same.

Everything people can give, aside from using coordinates, is based on not only what planets they randomly went to but where they decided to dig and explore. What I'm saying was my experience and its more of general suggestion rather than saying its always like this. Basically - early on use trees and pick star systems with lots of jungle planets. This will help quite a bit in avoiding fuel troubles.

I don't know why this was linked in some places but not others, or why they still haven't put the patch notes on the main site, but here it is. It's real simple stuff and you can drop a few fields like dependencies, all it really is is just something for the game to auto-recognize "there's a mod here".

So I just did what you said and all I get is a lovely json error message that tells you basically nothing.

So basically this feature just doesn't work if you have anything that modifies base game files.
