I had to look up what Newton's Cradle Effect was, but the only thing I could find is the reference to the Newton's Cradle toy which demonstrates the concept of momentum. My guess is that he's ripping off the title for Mass Effect, but couldn't find an appropriate synonym for "mass".

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/valhallions/superchron-a-fantasy-future-steampunk-paper-based?ref=home_location Superchron RPG a fantasy steampunk tabletop roleplaying game quote:Superchron is a fast paced adventure RPG (Role Playing Game) set in a future where mankind have been broken and scattered. The world has been remade and nature has grown wild and dangerous. Plants and animals have evolved and adapted to the new world. The very land itself can even be a dangerous foe to the unwary. quote:"It is written, that in the late 21st century, the World was remade anew, destroying all that had ravaged it for so long. Mankind, who had neglected the Maker in favour of their electric luxuries, would be cast down and forced to atone for their pride. So it was that the time of change came. The Maker’s guiding hand summoned the holy triad to aid us in our redemption. The roaming astral body of Nibiru returned to our solar system reeking orbital havoc as it passed. This was the first. This holy traveller used its majesty to enhance the second mighty stroke. An overdue Polar shift, gifting to the Earth full geomagnetic reversal." This is the prose they want two thousand GBP to make tons more of. quote:Also as long as there are no plagues of locusts, meteors, giant lizards, vengeful gods, or axe murderers, we should be able to complete the game! I'm seeing why Kickstarter requires that "Risks and Challenges" section now because it quickly shows whether the project creator gives one poo poo about practicality. 90% of everything is either bullshit "lulz, unless a loving meteor strikes we're golden!" or a high school essay paragraph's worth of "Well, I guess it might rain, or something might break, or, like whatever, I dunno."

I wrote better fantasy bullshit on message boards in high school. Plus, yeah, reversing the magnetic poles would do very little, it happens throughout Earth's lifetime. And even if you stopped the magnetic field (reversal wouldn't do that) it wouldn't cause machines to fail. Even advanced computer electronics wouldn't fail just because the Earth's magnetic field was gone; if anything there'd be less interference. GPS would stop working... that's about it. I guess the idea is that without GPS airplanes would immediately fall to the ground? I don't loving know. Zaphod42 has a new favorite as of 17:39 on Jan 14, 2014 |

What is with MMO kickstarters and shoestring budgets? I'm gonna be generous and assume they get about 200% funding. How in the hell are they planning to make an MMO on $100k? In ten months?

Especially as relying on subscriptions is super dodgy and relying on F2P and ads isn't going to get you much running money with a small playerbase.

There really isn't a place for this but here's an actually good IGG campaign that really needs some money thrown into it. Junk Head 2: claymation movie set in a strange scifi world. Part 1 has already been completed and you can watch it from the campaign page, and that was made near entirely by one guy over 4 years. Really hoping this gets the money it deserves! At a glance it looks pretty much identical to Tabula Rasa, a recent scifi MMO that was a terrible failure despite being produced by NCSoft (known for being able to milk money out of anything) and having Richard Garriott attached to it. Sounds promising.

Especially as relying on subscriptions is super dodgy and relying on F2P and ads isn't going to get you much running money with a small playerbase. Don't forget though that not only do you have to develop on that budget, but for an MMO you have to support the game on that budget as well. I guess you can charge monthly fees, but you at least need some up front capital in the bank. I guess if you've only got a couple hundred users hosting isn't going to be too bad, but if its a proper MMO that poo poo ain't cheap. But yeah, the biggest problem is that anything made on that budget is either going to be overly ambitious for that budget and fail, or realistic to that budget and be boring. Who would play a shittier tabula rasa when you can always play like planetside 2 or WoW or anything else better? The biggest problem with MMOs, above everything else, is the nature of being a huge time sink and a subscription based service means that there's very little room in the market for competition. One big product tends to attract all the users who are interested in that genre of MMO, and since their friends are playing on that one, they won't leave, and since they've already invested time to hit level 60, they won't leave. You can't just put out competing MMOs; its not even good enough to one-up them. That's why even though its now ancient, WoW is still trucking. To be fair EVE is a space fighter sim, and that's a pretty niche genre. I don't imagine most people interested in the FPS / WoW approach of this game would like EVE very much.

"Space fighter sim" is horribly inaccurate. Its much closer to WoW. You simply do not have control over your ship, you just issue commands. Its DEFINITELY not a space sim. You can issue a command "fly to point X" but you can't do barrel rolls or manually pull up on the yaw or anything of the sort. Games like Star Citizen and Elite are doing that, though. Most of EVE is about economy and politics.
