Didn't someone say that Rob only got worst with time, and that his early stuff on DC was pretty average. He just got into bad habits in the 90's but it was those bad habits that were selling comics (ie big muscled men, big boobed small waist girls, stupidly big guns etc).

There is an ongoing column on TCJ.com called "Jack Kirby: Behind the Lines", which is mostly an interesting dissection of the Marvel Method, but also an opportunity to I haven't visited any Kirby exhibitions but I think that his art needs to be projected on a huge wall next to the actual displayed page. Hell, I would cover the whole buildings in Kirby awesomeness. Also, way grittier art and subject than usually expected from the King:

I must have been 6 or 7 at the time, but an entire wall of their apartment was wallpapered with comic book covers from the early 1970's. I thought is was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. I wonder how many valuable comics that dude destroyed doing that though. I didn't like Kirby as a kid but as I got older and learned what the gently caress I was looking at, I developed a real appreciation for his stuff over time. Were the inked pages you posted done by Joe Sinnott by any chance? It looks like it.

One of my favorite Kirby things is this painted/collaged concept art for Metron in the back of the first Fourth World omnibus. I can understand using a reference and having the art be very similar, but it is disappointing if its a picture photoshopped and/or traced. I dunno, I can see such a style (using photoshopped pics) for a certain project so as long as the originals are referenced and it isn't passed off as original work but...eh, would rather not. Didn't Jae Lee or Mike Mayhew (I forget which) have that controversy with the Magneto in Military Uniform picture? I think during House of M. He basically slapped a face onto a real picture and used photoshop to pass it off as artwork. Randy's pose is pretty kicking awesome. RELEASE THE DOVES!

The only tracing thing I distinctly remember is that this one time, a BSS poster went and informed the copyright holder of a photo that some Marvel guy had traced their poo poo, and for some reason the entire forum came down on him like he'd just sold a child into slavery. It also directly led to Joe Q making a statement about how tracing would no longer be tolerated.

What are the page rates Marvel/DC paying for less than top tier artists? I'm not saying bad/mediocre/etc, just not (nerd) household names. If it's not that great, then I don't blame artists for taking shortcuts to fill Not Batman Or Wolverine #14.
