Campbell McLaren podcast is pretty decent.

Lots of old school UFC talk. Campbell has a good sense of humour too.

He knows less about MMA than I do which is funny, since he's doing a MMA show.

He hired Joe because Joe seemed like a tough guy comedian, without any knowledge of Joe's martial arts background. The color guy for his new show is a tough guy radio DJ without any BJJ knowledge at all. That's the level that this guy is on.

It's a really good show though. Ari Shaffir is good too, with no TSAchat.

The hunting episode with Callen, Rinella and Rinella's friend (I've forgotten his name) was really, really good. When Joe doesn't talk about conspiracies or have a groupwank session with people who just agree with him he's really fun and easier to listen to.

Also the Joey Diaz episode, but they're never bad.

It's always interesting when two people you've watched/listened to for a while finally meet. I just wished Joe would shut up more but Louie did offer insight into his documents, which is what I was hoping for. These LA stories coming out are going to rule.

Redban does appear from time to time. I don't mind him as much in small doses, but the podcast doesn't really lose anything by not having him present, whereas I used to think it would.

Chocolate posted:

Yeah I agree. I am just glad with his diminished airtime.

It's probably been said a thousand times over, but for all this show's faults Redban is the worst and easiest to fix (give him the boot). He has never says anything of worth, derails conversations, and he can barely do his googling job correctly (almost shows porn on the livestream, shows stuff Rogan asked him not to show, plays music/videos they aren't licensed to air). I still can't believe he is a "comedian" with dates. He's dreadfully unfunny and if he does crack a decent joke once every 10 episodes, I chalk it up to the broken clock theory. I usually listen to this podcast when I jog or workout and I make sure to not put my headphones on until after he makes some dumb animal noise (I usually fast forward 10 minutes in regardless because of the ads). Anyways, I only really listen to the show when an MMA personality or comedian I like comes in. The good thing I've noticed is Redban usually shuts up the whole episode when MMA people come in because he knows next to nothing about the sport (despite being around rogan talking about it all the time). When comedians are on it's like he feels a need to interject. Nothing points out how useless/unfunny he is better than when Joe takes a piss break and Redban is left with a guest. It's almost always awkward and a bad joke or two is thrown around. I was gonna say I don't know how people would actually pay to see his standup and I was wondering if anyone has/how bad is it? I realize I could probably find some stuff on youtube but I don't want to subject myself to that.

Anyways, for people who may have skipped it, the War Machine episode was cool. The guy may be a scumbag who turns a lot of people off, but he's got a sense of humor and a lot of stories. Him talking about his hosed up prison stay was especially good.

I've asked the same question before regarding the appeal of Redban's stand-up, and I think the answer was it's shock story-based (dolphins raping etc) which, however dumb it seems, does have some appeal among those who are at least familiar with him. When he opens for crowds that don't know him, he eats balls (example, Bryan callen's crowd, a show he refused to talk about).

I think it's a bit too big for that, but he does still constantly refer to people's response on twitter, so he pays attention. I dimed him out on having that crazy fracking guy on there and he at least mentioned that the Internet gave him poo poo for him.

I listened to Rogan's podcast for the first time after hearing that Louis would be on talking about his wonderful documents. It was a very frustrating listen - Rogan won't shut up about himself, is incredibly narcissistic, thinks he's far smarter than he actually is, and acts defensive and superior at weird moments. The name of the show should have been "Joe Rogan is interviewed by...". I understand that with a nearly 3 hour podcast you can be a bit looser with format, but the show was wayy over the top Joe to guest ratio. When you have a guy as interesting as Louie to interview, I can't understand how you end up on a 7 minute monologue about the JFK assassination.

wolfbiker

Yeah, it was a little underwhelming. I wonder if it's because Louis is used to asking questions and listening and Joe's just used to rambling.

Emetic Hustler
May 5, 2009

I don't know if it's because Rogan is stoned, but he does go into these pointless digressions a lot. Listening to the Theroux podcast there were many times where I thought, "ok, Rogan, that was a suitable aside, now get back to the guest and the original subject" but no, he just went on and on and completely lost the thread.

The Experiment
Dec 12, 2010

That's just how Joe Rogan operates. He has a couple of concepts:

1) All drugs should be made legal
2) In the future, there will be a collective consciousness
3) Whatever conspiracy theory he happens to be paying attention to at the moment

Then he does a one size fits all approach. It works for his stoner buddies but sucks rear end for someone like Louis Theroux. I was listening to some old JRE episodes and it's very different. Joe tends to talk about a lot of different things and now it's the same 3-4 topics over and over again.

He sometimes gets defensive to guests for some reason as well. Like he is intimidated by them. It's really annoying.

He rambled too much in the Neil Tyson one too.

BottledBodhisvata
Jul 26, 2013

He rambles, yeah, but I don't mind it for the sake of setting a conversational atmosphere. I like that the JRE is basically a three hour conversation between two or more people about topics that interest them. While he could give his guests more airtime, I like the easy-going way the show approaches topics, which I think does well to get people talking freely than a more rigid show.

I've enjoyed them all. I particularly liked the most recent one 'cos Joe and Chris kept getting into arguments about poo poo and they both got a little tetchy before Joe would use his "I'm a comedian, I'm loving with ya" out. They're definitely worth a listen, but then I enjoy all three of their separate podcasts so if just one of them irritates you then yeah, it'll probably grate.

I have been barely listening to this podcast in the last 6 months (have maybe listened to 1 or 2 full episodes) and decided to try this one out. It is really hard to get past Joe trying to sound way smarter than he is. I mean after Shane Smith said 'insidious' in the beginning, Joe tried (and failed) to use it like 15 times in the 45 minutes I listened to the episode.

Is he getting dumber or did I used to just not know of actual good podcasts a year or two ago? Also is his popularity declining or do goons just not care to discuss this show anymore?

I feel like what other people have said before in this thread is true for me, that once you've seen/heard a certain number of episodes you pretty much have heard everything Joe has to say. That's not a knock on him or anything, it's just that putting out multiple 3 hour podcasts a week will have that effect. I still will check out an episode from time to time depending on the guest, but I went from watching most episodes live on ustream and going back through the old episodes in the offtime to checking out maybe one a month.

Everyone I know eventually gets a little fatigued with it all and gets more selective about which ones they listen to.

I like the comedian and MMA guests, but if its someone I've never heard of is the guest and their bio mentions Libertarianism or psychedelics I won't bother at all.

The Experiment
Dec 12, 2010

On the Buck Angel episode, he said that considered himself the bridge between hippies and meatheads. I think he really believes that he is some kind of intellectual/educator to the MMA and comedy fans who still subscribe to his podcast. I think that might be why he brings up in almost every episode "Did you know that they banned hemp because of the paper industry?"

I pretty much just listen if it is a comedian or Shane Smith. Or if I'm really, really bored and have nothing better to listen to, listen to one of his older podcasts where he had more things to say than talk about who shot JFK.

Rorobb posted:

He's just repetitive, he seems to find about 6-8 things and harp on them over and over again with each guest. (For example, when was the last time he didn't mention hunting/wanting to eat only game meat he killed himself?)

I pretty much just tune in for Joey Diaz, The Machine, select other comedians, and his MMA guests. Anything to do with libertarians/psychedelics/aliens/bullshit topics I know Joe is going to ramble on about I skip.

I think the last REALLY good episode was with the coffee guy. I enjoyed that one as much as I did when I first started listening to the podcast.

Basically I've moved on to Maron and Stern, as I find those kind of long form semi-serious interviews more entertaining. I still will drop everything I'm doing to listen if Joey Diaz is on the podcast though.

Based on this thread, goons seem to listen to Joe Rogan solely to get mad about it or find excuses to call him stupid.

I don't think popularity is declining--if anything, his podcast continues to get a lot of bigger and more well-known/well-respected names. I can see the frustration with Joe talking a lot when his guests could be filling in the air-time, but everybody on the show seems to have a great time being there, and in Amber Lyon's case, he's literally responsible for sparking the idea for her new psychedellic journalism website, which sounds like a fantastic idea.
