quote:PonoMusic is a revolutionary movement conceived and founded by Neil Young. Our mission is to bring the highest-quality digital music to discerning, passionate consumers, who wish to experience music the way the artists intended, with the emotion, detail, and power intact. "It's about the music, real music. We want to move digital music into the 21st century and PonoMusic does that. We couldn't be more excited about bringing PonoMusic to the market," said Neil Young, founder and chairman of PonoMusic. Woah, 128GB. Look at the tags on the PonoPlayer's screen.

Bring digital music into the 21st century? I thought digital music was pretty much already a product of the 21st century.

What I'm wondering is who in the year of our lord 2014 actually thinks there's still an untapped market for a dedicated digital music playing device when every single smartphone fills that function quite nicely. Also a quick Google search reveals that the announcement of this device has audiophiles really, really excited so I'm fully expecting the Pono to do nothing. Meatwave posted:Question: Can I play nonsexual songs on the pornomusic player? Yes but only songs from the soundtrack of the hit Miyazaki film Ponyo.

"The PonoPlayer has 128GB of memory and can store 1000 to 2000 high-resolution digital-music albums." That'd have to be songs, not albums. And I'd love to know what their files do that FLACs don't.

FrozenVent posted:They have a much richer sound that allows for a deeper and more nuanced soundscape. Please elaborate. If the goal is to deliver master quality audio to the masses, you could do the same with flac and that wouldn't require the use of an expensive, proprietary, plastic toblerone.

Meatwave posted:Please elaborate. God do we have to explain everything? Okay, when audio is being unpacked from a digital format it has to be crunched. Flac only runs a double crunch which, while adequate, ruins the fidelity of the sound areas by solidifying the soundwave before it has time to properly compile. The Pono program, by comparison, runs a triple crunch pass which better equalizes the frequency and then a cleaner pass which sharpens the peaks, thus allowing for a much greater tone variance than traditional methods.
