Shaq-Fu 2 was an indie company that bought the Shaq-Fu rights and Mighty No 9 was a new company. If Capcom had been running a Kickstarter for a new Megaman game as a way of gauging interest I'm pretty sure people would be making fun of them too.

Mighty NO. 9 is Comcept but also Inti Creates who are an established company who have created or worked on many projects to date. That is what Comcept does, they pair with other companies and by the time of the M#9 kickstarter they were already working on Soul Sacrifice for Sony and Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z for Tecmo-Koei (also paired with other companies.)

If something like that ever got made it'd be nothing but a giant hole with a few dicks floating in the air within a day. Glorious but short lived.

Edit: can't find anything about how this guy plans to monetize his game, the first guy mentions a subscription as a backer reward. This is kind of important if you're serious about that sort of thing. Not like those one man MMO projects are going anywhere anyway.

So what about if you don't get your money, fella

I should write a program that automatically generates Kickstarter MMOs.

-SANDBOX
-NON-INSTANCED PLAYER HOUSES
-CLAIMABLE LAND
-CUSTOM CRAFTING ITEMS

Every single loving one of them boils down to "what if Minecraft had only one multiplayer server? And also a lot of bullshit features we need to include because they're improved versions of features in WoW."

That's always the million dollar question for me. Even in WoW it's a waste of time, since all the best items come from enemy drops anyway.

Most MMOs have crafting systems in it, and a lot of what you craft are things what make you kill other things better and/or things that can get you in-game money to get the things that kill stuff better.

No kidding, a lot of people actually like Star Wars Galaxies because you can play a cantina dancer or a weaponsmith. A cantina dancer can just /dance in a cantina and can make more money faster than a bounty hunter. When they introduced vehicles in an expansion, some people chose to get paid ferrying other players into quest zones or run a safari service instead of dogfighting in space. Although to be fair, the game actually supports this; it has no NPC weapon stores if I remember right.

I'd understand it if those games managed complete customization, and you could craft, say, dick swords, and then become MMO famous as the most realistic dick sword craftsman.

So there's this kickstarter for a book of interviews with Japanese game developers about the old days, sounds pretty good right?

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1748556728/the-untold-history-of-japanese-game-developers

But he's being sued now:

How could this happen?

What brought on the meltdown?
Garden-variety stress, we believe. John said he is unused to working five days a week, let alone every day, and has not worked with people IRL on a daily basis for many years. Having failed to prepare adequately for his stay in Tokyo, he was constantly anxious. John also claimed to be allergic to wi-fi signals, and Tokyo is well covered in those.

I can't decide if its hilarious or tragic. Both, I guess. Wow.

MMO Kickstarters are all basically a person who is really, really upset that the wallpaper in the house he currently lives in is the wrong color, and thinks that his ability to notice this mistake means he can build a house.

There was also Camelot Unchained and City of Titans. I think with City of Titans they didn't even have any professional developers on their team, they were just a bunch of City of Heroes fans who wanted to make a spiritual successor and people were willing to throw money at them.

Supposedly they have a flow of investment money that'll let them complete the game, but not to support a team large enough to complete the game as fast as they wanted, which is why they're still asking for money. I have no idea how accurate this is, since I kinda stopped paying attention around the time they launched the second Kickstarter.

I'm seriously suprised even at the 4-5 figure pledge levels they're not offering lifetime subs.

Whatever, Dancey basically promised this would be the chaotic murderfest early Ultima Online was*, so wait for it to inevitably go F2P the way all non WOW/EVE MMOs do and goonswarm it, if it ever gets released.

*He actually promised that it would be FFA PVP and all that, but it wouldn't descend into mayhem because... look, it just wouldn't.
