The heavy rail looks much, much better than before IMO. HSR could still use a bit of tweaking though.

There is a mod out there that helps but SC4D is broken atm so I will try to dig it up tomorrow evening. Also standard Maxis trees put a lot of strain on your PC for some reason while custom trees look much better and run totally fine. Definitely worth replacing if you still run them.

You can't go and post this without a link, because that is pretty as gently caress, now that I see this I can admit that the wobbly tracks always annoyed me but I would use the roads flattening trick to create a path. This however lead to a flatflatflatland-STEEPINCLINE-flatflatflatland mess.
Talking bout tracks, the NAM bends are pretty. Is the train slope mod compatible with NAM?

Disregarding your comment about starting a region from scratch, let's assume you download some region from the stack such as Eaton or Saul St Marie.

The lovely part is to forest all tiles you want to use. The initial trees are free but are a pain to put in place. There must be a mod somewhere to do this faster but you will have to find that yourself because I am lazy.

Where would people settle first? At the foot of a mountain, the place where the river flows into the sea or in the middle of fertiel farmland? Build some small settlements there with a few small farming plots, they have to work all this by hand/horse you know. Do this across the region in a bunch of different cities.

Now, how would they connect if they connect at all? Put in some railways and allow these to follow logical lines, so as straight as possible unless there are mountains in the way in which case you seek as little elevation as possible.

Revisit all your towns after they are connected. With the industrial age there will be bigger farms, so start drawing bigger farms. Use the shift key to prevent a roadgrid. Draw the farms spreading outwards from the town, but following the roads you made to have some outside connections other then rail.

You will see residential and commercial and all other demand spiking across the region now.

Build out your towns using the small farming plots as you can imagine the municipality would buy up one farm at the time to turn into shops and houses. Also, the bigger and more flat land there is in a region, the cheaper the land to build on so build spacious. You can put in a few small plots of dirty and manufacturing industry somewhere outside of town. This makes more sense in a harbor town then somewhere in the middle of Bumfuck, Alabama.
There is still no need for silly stuff like water, healthcare or schooling.

By now you can have most of your map/region that you think makes sense covered by farms and some small industry. Pick the town that is most likely to grow into a city, often near water. Do the same as above but remember to build in layers instead of going straight for a high-rise town. You can of course, the big region you build up that will have about a 100k citizens and three times that in jobs (mostly agriculture), will cause a huge demand in everything so you can build what you like.

This post is art. I always tried to build along these lines but never have I seen it explained so succinctly. Thank you for the inspiration.

Excellent writeup Keetron!

I've seen that style of region-building recommended before, and it definitely makes a lot of sense (though personally I find it a bit tedious modeling village after farming village.) It works pretty well for an American-style region where colonial expansion was a thing, but it's not so analogous to Europe, where you've got towns based off 2000 year old Roman road intersections and all sorts of strange details accumulated through the years (the same is true for a lot of the Eastern US, albeit minus the Roman flair.) There are other oddities you can incorporate as well, like Las Vegas, Silicon Valley or Milton-Keynes: cities which were planned from nothing, or whose economic function doesn't have much to do with their surroundings. I guess what I'm trying to say is the regional economic logic is absolutely sound, but don't be afraid to get a little weird - it's often funky details which make a region really pop. You just have to be specific about what those details are and what choices the citizens or government made for them to come about.

My city names are generally unfunny but I try and do ridiculous mayor names to make up for it.

Talking bout tracks, the NAM bends are pretty. Is the train slope mod compatible with NAM?

I've added the tweaked slope mod file to my Dropbox account here
It is completely compatible with NAM but will override or be overridden by any other slope mod that loads before or after. If you are unsure if you have another one installed just add more zzzzzs to the front of the file name to force it to load last.
This does affect the slopes of all networks and they all have individual slope modifiers with Monorail/HSR being the shallowest followed by rail with streets being the steepest. I used a very smooth slope mod as a base so it may be difficult for some players to use the mod initially as it does take a bit of practice to get everything right.
Road slopes are broken due to them being used as the land leveller tool and they will build large hills and pits at the end of slopes, to get around this build a street or one way road instead on the slope and drag a road over it to convert it.

Keetron posted:

Now that SC4D is back up I have found the link for the tree brush here. It basically just changes the brush to a much larger square. I've also found a trick for quickly placing trees is to hold down left click and right click at the same time and pan the camera around just fast enough that the trees don't render in straight away but fast enough that they still get planted thickly. The trees will render as soon as you slow down the camera movement but it generally saves you quite a bit of time.

So, I've gotten back into playing Simcity 4 again for like the 10th time.
Been working on a completely handmade region, my first time really using the terraformer, which makes things so much easier.

I call it Tacoma.

The region actually extends fairly far outside the screenshot there, but I can't remember how to get a pic of the whole area.
So far I have only two real cities going so far, The Naval Yards and the Port Area.

So first up is the Naval Yards, which does in fact have a Navy base:

And a Marina:

And an Industrial port:

Glasstown:

I've been playing a bit more with diagonals and stuff, just playing around:

So are all the pretty roads and whatnot from the transportation mods (NAM, SAM, etc.) actually functional or just for aesthetics? Same for the ploppables (using the Old-Fashioned pack and some other stuff), I can't really tell if they're actually functional buildings or just for show.

A ploppable functions like a regular building, except they can't be grown over by other stuff. They will provide tax revenue if there are people working there, so they can be a great jumpstart to a city. A landmark might give some park/plaza value, but other than that is nonfunctional. A lot of modders include growable (the normal ones,) ploppable and landmark buildings in their download. I tried to clear the boring or redundant versions out of the landmark menu, with a mediocre degree of success. That said, there are some interesting ones in OldFashioned which can be very useful - check out the VW factory if you want to employ 18000 sims in one building!

Thanks for the answers, I've been fiddling around a bit with the query tool and seeing which ploppables do what.

On the subject of plugin files, will datpacking files already used in my current game break the buildings that use them? Things are starting to chug and I'm wondering if consolidating my 4 GB plugins folder a bit would help.

Should be totally fine! The only reason I didn't datpack oldfashioned is I figured people might want to remove features (for instance, the stock building blocker.) I would keep NAM separate though, in case of an update - if you're using 3.0, I think there's a newer NAM version anyhow.

Hey, just started getting back into this, up and running NAM 32 and am attempting to get an elevated rail stacked over an avenue or 4 lane road. There's a puzzle piece specifically for this however I'm unable to place it, any one run into this? I can place single tile double deckers fine (el rail over road, one-way, street, etc), but the two tile pieces just give me a red cursor and I'm unable to tab through to select any others. Here's a video of what I'm attempting.

I've searched a bit for this on the SC4 devotion, but no luck. If anyone has run into this, be nice to know. Hopefully it's not user error...

Yeah I'm using a different NAM with 3.0. Thanks a ton for putting the pack together, everything looks wonderful.

Ctrl-alt-shift clicking the God Mode button will give you back the pre-city tools, where you have the much more powerful tree placing tool. It's sort of cheaty, if you care about that, because the trees are free. But you can always pretend that you never cut down the trees in the first place.

I always do. I absolutely love building my cities up from scratch. Sometimes use a cheaty cash injection just to kick things off so I can put things like motorways and railways down without bankrupting myself but I always build a profitable town.

It's a shame my game crashes so often on my current PC. Usually happens when I zoom in or out but it can also just happen randomly.
