Tha Chodesweller posted:Friend of the Night I was worried that the tour's setlist would be overly dominated by the new releases, since they announced the tour in tandem with Rave Tapes' release. But hearing that it's full of classics too is reassuring. I was actually trying to contact them earlier to make a plea for them to add Hunted By A Freak to their set, since last time Mogwai was in Vancouver they had to cancel the show due to visa issues. Excited for Sunday night.

Just got back, it was as fantastic as I was hoping for. Setlist varied abit from what Tha Chodesweller posted, but it was still a solid mix of tracks from their whole discography:

Any post-rock fans around Glasgow or Edinburgh? I've just moved up here and there doesn't seem to be much of a scene. Looking for gigs and some good local bands/venues to check out. Also I want to go and see We Were Promised Jetpacks next month in Glasgow and I have nobody to go with. Not really the same genre but maybe there's a bit of a crossover fanbase.

I say this as someone who's a nerd for reissues of pavement, smashing pumpkins and other mid 90's rock bands.

Post-rock thread, recommend to me! I really like Te' and stoner-y stuff like Isis (Panopticon!) and Pelican, and the first few tracks off Polinski's Labyrinths are really neat. I also remember liking Those Who Tell the Truth from Ex in the Sky, but I haven't kept up with them since probably that album. But then I've tried Plains of the Purple Buffalo and a couple 65days albums and nothing's really held my attention, so I think I'm skewing more towards the 'rock' of post-rock rather than the drony/ambient side of things. What are some heavy rockers I can add to my stable? \/\/\/ crushed by Youtube links Thanks for all the recommendations, I'll work through them this week and see if anything scratches the itch. You'll probably want to check out bands that get labeled as "post-metal", seeing as how you already like Isis and Pelican, I think the next obvious recommendation is Russian Circles. Pretty much all of their stuff is good, you can start with their first album "Enter" and go forward from there. I'd also recommend checking out Capricorns and Tides, they both play instrumental sludge that's really solid. Gifts from Enola is another solid post-rock band that gets pretty heavy, I'd recommend checking out their first 2 full lengths and their split EP. There are quite a few other Japanese bands that play a similar style to Te', some of my favorites are 3nd and Lite.

Maybe Cloudkicker? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hfm_ROTbUCw If you ever pull up Isis or Pelican on YouTube, CK should be recommended at some point. Show Me A Dinosaur is something I remember being a bit more metal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Psb01tLZzcY As is Lost in Kiev https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtPUmqPCgvM They're kinda similar to Russian Circles if memory serves. Toundra is also amazing and has been mentioned before in the thread https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyfdVdLGQpg Though they're a tad more psychadelic, I think. And I'm failing to remember exactly how close it might be to what you're after, but I like Baulta https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3W54RTC_jU And always go back to If These Trees Could Talk. Always. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8pVz6nJpEc

Jakob is superior. Definite metal bits Maserati https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sv0QzSdVwhk Perhaps more prog? Certainly upbeat Milhaven https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzQjHh_ycvs Deutschland über alles. Ok so the song is 16:38, but the payoff is pretty grand Red Sparrowes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN4VGyaIS0s This has a member of ISIS in so good odds here The Autumn Project https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDoi0wMA6ic Also quite long but quite good If you're looking fo harder things and don't mind the metal growl/scream then Cult of Luna is a good path to go down, perhaps start with their album Salvation

Just went and saw God is an Astronaut in Shanghai today. Amazing show. They covered their top songs from All is Violent All is Bright, Age of the Fifth Sun, and a few from Origins. Only compliant is that the drone was a bit too loud, drowned out some of the lead guitar and synth. Preview of their upcoming song was underwhelming compared to their more iconic songs in previous albums. angus725 fucked around with this message at 05:50 on Jun 8, 2014 |

Gotten around to listening Hiss Tracts - Shortwave Nights (which is still streaming at http://www.tinymixtapes.com/chocolate-grinder/premiere-hiss-tracts-shortwave-nights). There're clear roots of Set Fire to Flames and it reminds me of Boards of Canada's "Tommorow's Harvest" as well - quity gloomy, slow and repeating. Altogether, liking it so far.

I'm currently listening to the new sleepmakeswaves album Love of Cartography. In a year without many bigger-name, higher-profile post-rock releases so far (with the exception of Mogwai's Rave Tapes), this is easily the best post-rock album I've heard all year so far. Favorite tracks so far are definitely Emergent and The Stars Are Stigmata, both of which are total onslaughts, with the former sounding Russian Circles-esque at times. How We Built The Ocean is reeeeeeally great too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S-cAoNycT8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbO8toVeyrI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wdbozVs0-U So far there's been many more furious/dynamic parts on this album than slow/ambient parts, which is okay with me, but if that's not your bag then you might not like the album as much. This may get decimated by the new This Will Destroy You / Mono albums which are both coming later this year, but for now it's the best post-rock release I've heard in a while. Oh, speaking of the new TWDY album, did anyone post the single in here? They released it last week and it's loving killer. The album drops in September. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgMWvuahjvc
