Well, right now people are just spitballing in the thread. Some people like MOBA ideas, the rest of us pray the series doesn't go down that route into a stupidly crowded market of samey games.

However, Sega has Relic under their wing right now, and they also have Creative Assembly who are making a Warhammer Fantasy Total War-style game. It's reasonable to think that Sega and GW would try to keep multiple GW properties under one publisher, but we don't really know. There was work being done on DoW3 back before THQ went under, but nothing's really come up since.

This was posted a while ago, but who knows:

I thought so too, but I've since been informed that GW did not continue the 40k licence with Relic under Sega despite their best attempts, and instead are farming it out for a bunch of terrible shovelware for mobile. Sega only has the Fantasy license.

Best hope for that unannounced title is for Homeworld 3, where we pretend the dismal story from Homeworld 2 never happened.

Deffrollas have not been as useful in 6th and 7th as it messes with the ability of the wagon to deploy bodies. Bodies that can punch vehicles more effectively. Warbosses are strength 10 with a larger pool of attacks on average. RPJ seems to only be a loss as far as shooting is factored in. I am not sure those losses are heartbreaking. Ramshackle on trukks is not a nice loss. Trukks are a bag of shite and now have less ability to stay useful.

Cheaper fast attack (apart from Dakkajets)makes up for the rise in Battlewagons.

I always would Flat Out turn 1, then turn 2 disembark with the passengers to let the wagon charge on. As for trukks, there was always the debate about trukkboyz vs. stormboyz; with Ramshackle gone and a point cost reduction for stormboyz, I feel the matter is pretty well settled.

Has there ever really been a 40k computer game that was the one to play if you weren't already a fan of the license, though? As far as I'm aware there have been better/more mainstream RTSes and shooters at any time that the 40k ones have been on the market. As long as they keep their expectations in line, a 40k MOBA could defend its own niche.

I am thinking bikes over stormboys? Each got ~25% point reduction but the good guns on the bikes plus T5 4+ is probably why stormboys will sit out again for me. Wyverns and thunderfires will just make stormboys weep.... And think about taking 30 loving dangerous terrain tests at the top of turn one. I would have to do it separately since I am a horrible person and ~it matters~.

Although probably the best option is to just go 50/50 model-wise and run all the boyz in the army as one or the other until I have enough for full mobs of whichever.

Dawn of War I was really groundbreaking. Units that fought separately in close range and hand to hand were pretty unheard of, and removing resource mining altogether was a really bold move. Squads instead of individual models for units was pretty unusual too, but not totally unheard of. I was already interested in 40k before I played Dawn of War, but it's what really pushed me over the edge.

I've painted up a combat squad of Scouts with sniper rifles. These models are leagues better than the plastics, even if the poses are kinda limited. The sergeant has the little red skull on his Ultima, and the squad is the first in the 10th company. I'll need to go back and add squad markings to my other Scouts later:

Sorry if it was worded bad, I'm just saying market over-saturation, not necessarily the IP, will hurt it. They are going to be fighting against 2-3 large MOBA/MOMA/WHATEVER companies that have millions of users, already make tons of money, and set the standards for those genres. Not to mention that, being the latest AAA trend, you can expect lots of other games to be in that area too.

I really wish GW could hand their IP to some competent companies, sans Relic.

Eh, also, other people pointed out that I may have perceived things incorrectly in terms of past game markets.. I still think that in 2014 a 40k game is going to succeed on the strength of the license, even if part of that is bringing new people to the license. I hate to agree with GW on something but there really is no competition for the 40k universe, for those to whom it specifically appeals.

All of this MMO shite for 40K is just ridiculous.

Look at Planetside 2. Study it.

Take this formula. Translate it to 40K.

This game is begging to be loving made

Imperium faction: Start as a guardsman, upgrade to a stormtrooper or specialist. Can grab the variety of tanks from the vehicle pool for an armoured assault. Perhaps pilot a Valkyrie.

As you level up, you can become a Space Marine. Heavily armoured, and in limited numbers on each side (they have similar mechanics in Planetside I believe with mech suits). Perhaps on each time at any one time there could be 5-10 Terminators.

Xenos factions: Eldar are a no-brainer for various specialists. Higher level players could be farseers, and Wraithlords/Avatars.

Orks - start as a yoof, aim to become a nob. Could be a Mek, or a loota, driving ramshackle vehicles which are cheaper to make and maintain.

Tyranids - start as a low-level 'gant of some sort, with the advantage of instant respawns. Then a warrior, then the different mid-level biomorphs. Their "tanks" are Carnifexes, and their "flyers" are someone "piloting" a flying MC. Upper tier creatures are super warriors and/or a Tyrant or two.

I mean come on, am I crazy to think this? Three continents in PS2 - could be the same in a 40K FPSMMO. You don't need to have all game factions, just have Imperium + Eldar + Tau vs Chaos + Demons + Orks vs Tyranids or something

Forgive me if this is already being made, I haven't been following the MMO chat since there was that Dark Millennium one, I dunno what happened to that though.
Oh god yes, instead of vehicle spawners, Tyranids could have various pools of biomass that they dive into and come out as a Crone, Carnifex or Exocrine. :10bux:

By [not really all that] popular demand, here's a how-to guide on how I paint my white panthers, including how I do the white.

1. It all starts with a coat of black primer. I prime on the sprues, because it's way easier to get coverage that way. Then I cut the pieces out, clean them, and assemble. I'll use black paint to go over any exposed plastic at this point, and I'll paint the actual "black" parts of the model, such as the thighs, at this point.

2. The next step is a coat of Reaper Miniature's Snow Shadow. I don't love all the Reaper paints, but I do use a couple of the off-whites here because they come in droppers and have colors that for some reason Games Workshop no longer produces. The first layer here is basically the old Space Wolf Grey color, which is kind of a very light pale blue. I usually coat this twice to get good coverage on the parts that will eventually be white. The picture below is from a single coat.

3. Once I've double-coated, I usually paint the chest emblem. That means a layer of Averland Sunset, being careful to leave the lines between "feathers."

I'm usually also working with the arms as I go, but I'm only covering the body here. I almost always paint the torso/head/legs and arms/backpack before assembly, otherwise you miss big chunks on the inside of arms/weapons and it looks awful. This dude's gonna have a Lascannon when I'm done.

4. Next comes the red. Here I'm using Mephiston Red to do the wax on the purity seal, the eyes, and the belt crystal.

5. Then I'm gonna hit those red spots with some Carroburg Crimson in the upper corners to create some shading for crystals, and I hit the chest emblem with Agrax Earthshade. If I weren't dedicated to bright-rear end yellow chest emblems, I might consider stopping here or just adding highlights to the chest emblem. But I'm pretty retarded so there will be more. I also add Leadbelcher to the joints, Piping, and Metal bits and wash that with Nuln Oil.

6. Next comes the "white." I'm actually using a Reaper color called "Ghost White" which is a bluish offwhite shade. The GW equivalent was "Ghostly White," which they no longer make (or have an analogue shade to). I use two coats of Ghost White to create the white on my White Panthers. It goes on easier than the whites, but if I want to get fancy about shading, I'll mix Ghost White with Snow Shadow for shading and White Scar for highlights. As-is, they basically look white, even up close in person. Also fabulous.

7. I gemstone up some chunks of red by painting black dots in the upper corners and then adding a small white dot. I overdid it a bit on the belt gemstone.

8. Next I take a small brush (either 5/0 or 10/0) and paint the chest emblem with Flash Gitz Yellow. I also paint the purity seal with screaming skull, then I wash it with Agrax Earthshade.

9. I hit the purity seal with a little more Screaming Skull to highlight, and add highlights around the edges of the black parts using Mechanicus Standard Grey.

10. Last but not least, I use a black Micron .005 pen to do the black lines on the purity seals. Way easier than trying to use a brush.

And that's about it (still have a couple of touch-ups/fixes to make). Total time: roughly 2.5 hours, when I'm not stopping to take photos after every step. Next up I'll paint the lascannon and backpack, glue those on, add finishing touches, then paint the base with Astrogranite texture paint and drybrush that with a lighter grey. Then it's on to the next mans.

Bikes are squads of 15 now? Not 12? I was mech assault at lower points then moved to Kan wall or hybrids. I have 9 kanz that I will probably not touch for a while.

Few more thoughts on orks:

Mob rule might not be so bad, even if you roll poo poo and get 6 hits that's only about two more wounds than previously, and the bosspole can hopefully avoid auto fail situations for <5-10 model squads which is actually better than before.

Looks like Ork leaders can only have one relic at a time? Entry says: "A model can take one of the following" While the entry above for another category says "A model can take up to one of each of the following." Got to choose Da Lucky Stikk or Da Finkin Kap. Tough call to be honest.

Does Cybork bodies do anything for units that have FNP? Is it like warpflame where it boosts FNP +1 then gives 6+ if there is none?

Does Grotsnik have any rules that force him to move and attack nearest thing still? Does he have a specific warlord trait?

This is what I am thinking currently for a list. Not every toy, but you know the old proverb...

Lootas + meks joyride in waggon and either sit still or say gently caress it and drive 12" a turn for side angles. What do mekboys come with now? Can they still be bought in a squad of lootas or only as HQ addons?
