The new one is definitely the better of the two but they still look horribly generic.

I'm not saying modern cars are ugly, per se, I'm saying that subtlety and restraint have become a lost art. What happened to the days when a well-heeled gentleman could purchase a vehicle only slightly different looking to a run-of-the-mill execumobile, but with a fire-breathing engine and uprated suspension and poo poo? Now everything has to have "Look at me! Look at me!" stamped on it in 70pt bold comic sans and it's just poo poo. Leave the screaming, outrageous styling to the true sportscars.

Nothing punctuates the point that the awesome styling of the '00s is dead better than Lexus... But it's not even the expensive cars that are starting to look like poo poo these days, and you don't have to dig too far into the past to see it. This is a car you could still drive new off the lot just 2 years ago: And this is its replacement: Turbo Fondant fucked around with this message at 23:52 on Jul 5, 2014 |

Yeah I used that as an example because I've been looking pretty closely at them, if my Toyota ever starts making GBS threads the bed or if it gets plowed into again a Koup will almost certainly be my next DD. I tried really hard to like the new ones but after looking one over in person the bulges really are awful to look at. They're not even bulgey in the endearing way that the first gen Rio was. The original Koup OTOH, was the first sub-$30k car to really get a 'whoa' out of me the first time I saw it.
|
# ? Jul 6, 2014 00:13 |
The downside being the original koup, even in six speed form, was tepid at best. The new one comes with a 1.6L turbo which is surprisingly fast. They're about a billion times nicer to drive, too. The TD cerato was a low-point for kia in handling and steering feel, the previous (very ugly) cerato was a lot nicer because it had IRS and hydraulically assisted steering. They seem to have figured out how to make EPS not suck now.

They seem to have figured out how to make EPS not suck now. I haven't driven either yet (I'm really bad at making car salesmen think I'm serious enough about buying for a test drive, and just asking for one doesn't seem to work either), but I'm driving a 2700 pound wagon (probably closer to 3000 when you consider it's got my fat rear end in it as well as all the poo poo I carry around) with a 1ZZ. We only got the TD with the 2.0 or 2.4 here, so it's got a minimum of 40 more hp than what I'm in now and the same weight. As long as they didn't gear it ridiculously tall I'd expect to see more pep in a straight line than I've got now. On the suspension end, I actually prefer the way a twist-beam rear end reacts to a corner versus IRS on a FWD. I'm leary on the whole early-EPS thing though, I suppose I'll have to just try it out the next time I see one on a used car lot?

That jag looks like straight garbage old person car; and not like "Jackie Stewart is old and would drive this now," old -- more like some retiree in Florida would have a vanity plate and chrome poo poo on it old. Alternatively, it would be unidentifiable in a Luby's parking lot on a weekday afternoon.

The 2000s Quattroportes are pretty drat stunning. It's a shame the replacement has lost some of that distinctiveness, but then again, they're probably better in every metric outside of appearance.

As I posted in my Cappuccino thread, today was the Doncaster car show. Here are a few pictures I took, in no particular order. However, this first one shows what makes it such a great day: Anything interesting is allowed, so you get an R8 parked next to a Stanley steam car: So on with the show! Note: Let's play "Where's Cappo?". InitialDave's Suzuki is lurking somewhere in one of these photos. Who will be the first to find it? It's quite good at hiding... Any UK goons able to make it should definitely add it to their annual calender.
