Lightwave was going that in the early 90s, Foundation Imaging would start a render job overnight for Babylon 5 and it would be distributed between all the Amigas in the office

that was distributing frames but ones like maxwell render can have many computers working on the same frame (or still) with a different seed and then you can merge all the light calculations they did into one higher quality image you kind of have to if you don't like dots
