I'm about to buy my first fleet ship, and am wondering if those in the know think the universal consoles on the retrofit variants are worth the extra 500z / 10 days dil. I'm torn between the T'varo and Ar'Kif, so that means the Plasma Destabilizer or the Focused Singularity Modulator.

I use my ar'kif console along with the Quad Cannons, but I admit it's basically an affectation and if I was being optimal I wouldn't use them. But gently caress it, Quad Cannons look cool. MikeJF fucked around with this message at 00:20 on Oct 8, 2014 |

Be sure to toss the quad cannons into the upgrade system even if you don't actually upgrade them. Going from infinity to MkXII is like +50 dps, for free. And yeah it's probably subpar, but the Ar'kif console isn't bad as those go and you do get bonus plasma damage from the 2-piece bonus too.

Thanks for the advice! I went ahead and picked up the Ar'Kif console because, hey, looks good and costs more later. I figure I've got a bit before I need to care about maxing anyway, just wanted to make sure it wasn't totally worthless. I don't mind dropping $20 or so after Delta Rising, because the game's been good so far!

I just bothered to log in for the first time in a month and actually attempt to upgrade my items. All I have to say is wow, this is the most horseshit convoluted money-grab timesink crafting system I have ever seen. I suppose it makes sense if you just think 'I'm just buying these items again!' but at that point I also think 'why don't they just give me the option of spending the dilithium all at once instead of nickle-diming me for four days, making me wait to craft tech upgrades and then wait AGAIN when I charge the power meter to upgrade the item?'. Surely they could think of a more streamlined way to gouge me, is what I'm saying.

It's all very carefully calculated, probably by PWE "monetization specialists", and it's all classic sorts of abusive bullshit used in numerous lovely F2P and mobile games. And it's really just depressing... if Cryptic didn't use those underhanded tactics the whole system would have been way better received and welcome, even if the actual total costs were the same. But people know when something feels shady even if they do give in, and that definitely hurts the game in the long run.

Thing is I know I'm being gamed and I'm less annoyed about the dilithium cost than the incessant clicking and crafting times on everything. It makes me not want to bother with the game at all. Not because they are bleeding dilithium out of me, but because it's so loving confusing and obfuscated how items are to be upgraded. Everyone says the real dil sink is going for rarity upgrades, and that the mark upgrade is guaranteed, but why does it have to be something on the order of like a few hundred clicks per item to upgrade it?

Yeah, but that's exactly what I mean. The fact it's confusing and obfuscated is intentional, since it hides the actual costs and drives people to spend more. And it's definitely complete tedious bullshit. STO's always been "the good one" as F2P games go... even the lockbox rewards were tradeable and purchaseable off the AH so you never needed to actually do the gambling. This on the other hand is way too central (you will definitely need to upgrade) and causes way too many problems (it's tedious as gently caress, it feels abusive, it absolutely ruins their endgame reward system since the fun sidegrades from reps and such are now a sizable expense...) and it's putting short term profit over long term health. I hate to admit it but I recommended STO to friends before because it wasn't the usual F2P bullshit, and I have a good feeling that this was a big part of its new player retention too.

Yeah, the base game is remarkably casual-friendly for a f2p which the new upgrade stuff goes completely against.

I blame Perfect World. The first big dil-sink thing that came down the pipe from PWE was the R&D system, I guess it just wasn't enough of a money grab for them.

Asimo posted:The answer of course is obvious: to bleed money out of people. It hides the actual cost of an upgrade (sure it's only 900 per tech item... but then you need 10-20 of them) and then plays to the sunk cost fallacy, where people who've invested into an item but run out of dilithium feel pressured to spend more so that the resources spent already aren't "wasted". The timers are a similar sort of psychological screwjob; you already put the resources in, but you can't use them item (at all, not even the upgraded one!) until the timer's up, so again there's some passive pressure to rush it... Although I'm trusting of the general goon zeitgeist on games, I'm too new of a player to have yet formed a personal opinion on the new upgrade system. But as a newish player, it does ~feel~ tedious and grindy. Is Cryptic going to make upgrading easier for subscribers?

Or at the very least, had a different tab for quality and mark upgrades, so one couldn't mix up the two.

I totally get they are trying to monetize more, I really do. My issue isn't with that. My issue is that the game is fun to play and makes sense up until the end game, and then hey! bullshit mandatory crafting interface and upgrade procedures that introduce a clumsy, difficult to penetrate UI. They did the same thing with the doff system and that wasn't even a monetization. I just think whoever is doing these changes doesn't quite understand what makes a UI intuitive. As much as I'd like to blame this whole thing on 'we're making it obfuscated so people don't realize how much dilithium they're spending', I think that's really only part of the issue.

To be fair, it's not mandatory. You'll still outperform vast swaths of pubbies in PvE with the gear you have now just on the fact that they don't know how to gear, or fly, their ships.

And of course, to get the best materials and dil rewards in DR you'll need to run elite STFs, which from tribble reports are going to require more DPS than many goons have. No more 960 dil and mats from a 5 minute pubbie ISE run.

g0del posted:It's not just the dil costs they're hiding. Those tech upgrades require rare and VR mats to make the components which then make the upgrades. Those 10-20 tech upgrades probably used 5-10 million ec worth of crafting materials. It's hidden costs all the way down. I wonder what the baseline is for the sake of Advanced/Elite? I mean, the difference between Fleet and Non-Fleet and built rep and no rep can be either massive or nothing at all depending on what you're flying and what weaponry you're using. And applying your upgrades to get your stuff to Mark 14 will also take time, especially if you're doing it yourself. The least damage/work is probably Polaron or Tetryon. Jem'Hadar 2-set, get your damage bonus, both from quests. Tetryon means going to rep, but the Nukara 2-piece set. There's a few interesting weapons in quests. The most damage probably comes through Plasma at the minute, though there's a few hoops. Ideally, you need to be a Romulan, because you need both the Zen Arkif and Arkala for the set bonus to Plasma damage. You also need your science slots filled out with Fleet Plasma-infused consoles you can upgrade. Then you need to get your Romulan Plasma weapons(probably more cannons and turrets), for the sake of them being Plasma with the Disruptor proc for more hull damage. You also want the two-piece Romulan rep set 'Romulan Singularity Harness', more plasma damage. Bloodly fucked around with this message at 18:23 on Oct 8, 2014 |

Say, can Romulans/Aliens on the Romulan side wear 20th Century formal/evening clothes, and if so, can we use those clothes on away missions? Because I want to make a Bond Villain™ character, with my away team being two MASSIVE Gorn (can THEY wear the formal stuff too? I really hope so) tacticals armed with CQC weapons and two scantily-clad Orions (again, can they wear the formal stuff?) for my Science and Engineering officers. It'll be AWESOME. EDIT: Other ideas for 'themed' away teams would also be nice. I saw one dude on Nimbus run with a Power Rangers theme (sans helmets, sadly), another like a bunch of 60's nurses, it's hilarious. Does anyone here have any clue whether I can buy any other things for it, or if I am stuck with both a ship which is horrible AND fighters I i find horrible?
