Is anyone here a member of the Green Party? I'm considering it but I'm just wondering why there's no PR, no campaign, no voices, no status push whatsoever in regards to the general election. Scottish Green's have been great for years, though now the independence thing is dead UK Green Party is the only one with an anti-Nuclear agenda that are in a position to do anything about it. The gently caress, Greens? Where are ye?

Food banks are now such a year-round institution in churches and communities that the harvest festival seems a bit redundant. It's a nice tradition though, it's a bit like the various festivals they have in Buddhist countries where the community gives a load of donations to the monastery. It could become a tradition to have a big clear-out and give old clothes and toys to charity shops, as well as donating food. But then that'd probably get commercialised too and it'd turn into a pressure to throw away all last year's Christmas goods to buy more tat a few months later. Guavanaut posted:We should combine the two and set fire to the rightful king every year. This is a nice idea.

Guavanaut posted:I'm sure if Harvest Thanksgiving did resurge in popularity it would be as much a church holiday as Christmas and Easter are now, and most people would do whatever customs involved in a secular way. As Zephro said though, that means it would probably turn into the same as the other holidays with some gimmicks and its own set of greeting cards. Having just "celebrated" Harvest Festival at a secular primary, it appeared to me to be a festival of educating kids where their food comes from (little farmers with a red tractor, two cows and a sheepdog) and collecting food for the local food bank (the donations from families in a moderately deprived area in south London were exceptionally generous).

I think poor people get into financial trouble more often and easily and tend to develop bad habits with money. Loans are taken out for nice but misguided reasons like 'to give the kids a real Christmas' rather than booze and fags. When they get a windfall they spend it straight away. They also do silly stuff like financing cars. I imagine the stats back me up if anyone has any.

I think we should suspend hostilities with Russia. We have so much in common and isolating them with sanctions will just entrench the leadership, as in Cuba or, as they say in Moscow, na Koobe. Let's work together to defeat militant Islam, recognise the Crimean election result, help them plunder the Siberian wilderness, drill the arctic and enforce Russian language teaching in eastern Ukraine while Russian forces mysteriously melt away faster than the ice caps.

Admitting that they're giving UKIP more media exposure because they like them (mostly due to their substantial media exposure) would be a lot less transparent than pulling a Pissflaps and changing their criteria every other week to maintain a semblance of balance while still favouring UKIP.

The reason's more boring than that, I just don't have my password remembered so I use a less secure one at work. Figured the nearly identical names, same creation date and neither having an avatar would let most people know it was the same person. And, until someone got me an av, it seemed to be the case. Yeah, I'm a member (Scottish Greens), and you're right. There's a lot they should be doing that they aren't. Problem largely is that they have no money and their commitment to internal democracy does kind of slow down any unified position. North of the border at least they're also in the midst of a massive re-organisation given their ridiculous levels of new members. Additionally, they're inexperienced when it comes to large scale politics, being mostly focused (practically and ideologically) on the local level. It's an issue I have with the way it's currently run too, but it's inevitable given its context.
