These days we're supposed to have 100 Gripen C/D on paper but I'm pretty sure not all of those are actually in service. For the next generation we're supposed to get 70 Gripen E; originally it was 60 but they added 10 more recently because of the old Russian arch-nemesis starting to rattle sabres like it's 1699. A lot of old school people (and quite a few new school ones as well) are very upset about both that and the lack of dispersed basing and are talking a lot about The Good Old Days. Defensewise, it seems to be good news that your latest defense review does actually say that you done hosed up with your defense reforms. I just hope Finland and Sweden can actually get something going now that we have that defense cooperation treaty, so we could buy the new Gripen instead of the Super Grover.

Not that they are the only one to blame, our finance minister called the military for a side interest during last election period.

That's certainly an interesting point of view given that the current "Russia problem" is with a state that was neutral and held rather close ties to Russia right up until little green men showed up and carved a chunk out of them in an operation apparently conceived of and (according to the medal they handed out for it) initiated even before said country had the gall to pursue better trade relations with the EU or impeach their corrupt as gently caress president. But I suppose it must be easier to ignore such things when you've got half of NATO between yourself and the pariah-state-in-the-making in question. Hey, maybe if they strengthen their ties enough with Russia then Switzerland could enjoy a privileged neutrality and do things like maintain a sizeable chunk of the Russian nuclear arsenal. I hear there's an opening for that job.

It's pretty amazing how easy is it to make Americans mad. You just need to tell them that they are poor and/or uncivilized and they will use up pages upon pages to first cry, and then to reassure each other. Let's look at it this way, you keep sending your teenagers into their early deaths in another continent while we enjoy a better society and vastly superior standards of living.

Cippalippus posted:Let's look at it this way, you keep sending your teenagers into their early deaths in another continent while we enjoy a better society and vastly superior standards of living. Europe's able to enjoy that better society and vastly superior standard of living because we've been stupid enough to augment and cheaply (through incentives) supply most European militaries for the better part of a century. Also, the Marshall Plan and Switzerland's decentralization and harboring of the monies and assets of some of the world's worst entities and people (including more than a fair share of ours) has more than a bit to do with *your* current level of comfort. If you like we could take all of that away as a seemingly-high-on-himself Russian Plutocratic dictator-for-life races towards senility. Just kidding - we'll never leave exactly *because* of that.

Off-topic, but can anyone make out what Putin's badge says here? Not all of it is visible, but I can't read Russian. Comedy caption: "How come they're only painted nicely like this when I visit?" Better look at the obscured part of the badge: I'm just curious as to whether it's something other than "Russian President and Commander-in-Chief." Also note the "1" inside the wings.

No, as far as I can see, it's exactly that: "Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Putin V.V." There might be an extra word that's half-obscured that I'm not sure about. I don't actually read Russian but I've read a lot of side-by-side translations of Russian official documents so it rubs off on you.

Ah yes, the good ole' Swiss superiority complex. Their holier than thou attitude transcends even the second world war where they ran poo poo like Straflager Wauwilermoos or as American airmen called it The Black Hole of Wauwilermoos. Much fun was had in this poo poo hole where the Nazi-sympathizing Swiss were in charge of the show, treating people the same way the real Nazis did. (Sorry, I know you guys really wanted to be just like Uncle Adolf.) Some excerpts from Masters of the Air "To run it, Swiss authorities could not have chosen a more odious character. Capt. Andre-Henri Beguin, a former officer in the French Foreign Legion, was corrupt as he was cruel. At the time, he was under investigation by Swiss authorities for adultery, bribery, embezzlement of prison funds, spying for the Germans, and unlawfully wearing a Nazi uniform (while living in Germany before the war he signed his correspondence, "Heil Hitler"." Oh and this is my favourite part: "Late in the war, he also made several formal protests to the Swiss government about the deplorable conditions at Wauwilermoos, where dozens of American airment were being held incommunicado without trial for indefinite periods. This is no was excuses his (Gen. Legge) refusal to personally visit Wauwilermoos or his failure earlier in the war, to make close inquiries about its existence. When Culler was finally taken from Wauwilermoos and given his day in court, he discovered that Swiss justice was a mockery. The military court proceeding was conducted entirely in German, and when it was over, Culler was handed an English translation of the transcript. He would be sent back to Wauwilermoos without medical treatment and for and unstated period of time. The transcript did not contain a single word of his oral testimony describing his rape and the conditions inside the prison. The final indignity was a bill Culler received for 18 francs-compensation for the court's time and trouble." The author goes on to cite how that only when it was clear that Germany would lose the war, were they then sympathetic and co-operative to the Allies. So gently caress you Switzerland.

That actually appears worse than conditions in German POW camps. Things I have to remind myself of every time Cipp shows up to spout nonsense that has literally nothing to do with airpower and everything to do with his inability to stop spreading a mixture of idiocy and hate wherever he may post: Cippalippus posted:Hey let's give total legitimacy to a "religion" founded by a pedo, and full of people who're happy to behead people with kitchen knives or blow themselves up for 70 virgins and a collection of anime in their afterlife. No really it's totally legit. Same guy unironically says anyone mad about the Catholic church has been cherry-picking bits here and there to make the Catholics look bad. Cippalippus posted:Nazism wasn't fundamentally evil, it still had a (wicked) ethos behind it. What really made nazism worrying is that it took power in Germany and not in the usual third world shithole, meaning that they had the ideology and the means to pursue it. So, the only problem with Nazism was that the people who adopted it were so competent and powerful? If only they'd been powerless, third world pieces of poo poo! He also voted to ban scary architecture. And he doesn't understand basic geography. But maybe he'll shut up and just post plane pics one day?
