Red Bones posted:But yeah, the sticky launcher is by far the best offensive weapon in the game but you can't nerf it without causing a huge loving uproar. If you halved the clip on it, it'd probably be level with the rocket launcher and the scattergun, but as it is, it's better than both. Yes and it needs to be the best offensive weapon because the Demoman sucks without it. He's slow and has lovely HP, if he didn't make up for that with something there'd be no reason to play him instead of Soldier(the class that's good at everything). Basically the issue with balancing the game which is that Valve will never nerf Soldier and so every other class needs some kind of overpowered thing so that you can go "that's why I would play that class instead of the really easy class that's good at everything and has loads of HP".

There's a server mod called Class Wars and it makes it where both teams can only play one class, spy versus spy is incredible.

The other problem is the sentrygun. If there's going to be a place to turtle up, there needs to be a class that breaks the stalemate. In L4D, for example, you have shelter spots and tanks to flush survivors out. In TF2, you have a light-ish class that focuses on burst damage, at the expense of overall sustainability (both stickylauncher and GL have the highest first-shot-reload-time penalties in the game). The overall DPS when a demo is reloading one shot at a time is pitiful Complaining that a Demoman at midrange with full clips does too much damage is like complaining that a spun-up heavy at point blank kills you before you can even react, or that a sniper can one-shot you from a distance while you can't even return fire. It's a feature, not a bug. Don't 1v1 someone who has a tactical advantage. Instead, keep applying gentle pressure, wait for the demo to get nearly-empty clips and then push in. Or, attack from somewhere you can't get stickies to land, like from the top of the containers on Granary mid or something. Paul MaudDib fucked around with this message at 02:11 on Dec 19, 2014 |

So - no chance of getting TF2 items for crafting the badge in the holiday sale this year. Bit lame? Perhaps the TF2 smissmas update will make up for it...

There needs to be extremely powerful combat classes because without them absolutely nothing can be accomplished. Try playing on offense on a team with no Demos, Soldiers, or Heavies. Whole lotta nothing, eh?

Big thanks to the M2 + shoot stickies info. Battlements storming soldiers are no longer a problem, I even had people calling BULLSHIT too which is a rarity for me. Great for offense but it's a shame when you shoot a perfect sticky, and in that millisecond when you get killed is 'daaaaaaamnit' inspiring.

Medic-pairs rule the wastes, and noobs run scared. Fortunately we have nine classes, but that doesn't mean that they're all balanced perfectly. Demo could probably well afford having his sticky launcher clip reduced by two, most people probably wouldn't even realize that it had been nerfed. Also, totally separately, recently I've had one of those lovely moments where a class really clicks for you. The last time it was Sniper, and this time it is as a Direct Hit soldier. It's been wonderful seeing the killfeed fill up with so many bullshit kills. And its speed and bonus to airshots mean that I'm going for them quite a bit more. So much fun. I've tried picking up the Buff Banner as well, but I immediately miss having the Shotgun to clean up the guys that manage to survive a close encounter with the Direct Hit. I miss the ability of the Rocket Launcher to knock whole groups around, but generally if I toss three or four Direct Hit rockets into a group they'll scatter anyway. Unless you correspondingly reduce the defensive capabilities of the defensive classes by 25% you're just making the game even more defensive than it already is.

The game shouldn't be balanced around having a single overpowered weapon. Not that reducing the sticky launcher clip by two would be the apocalyptic tragedy that you're suggesting at all. I've played far too many games as the dominating Demo (both on offense and defense) to think for a second that the game would break just because I had to reload a bit earlier. I think there's a reasonable niche for him without just making the sticky launcher better than rockets. "Not the slowest class" does not make him not slow and being able to kill idiots with sticky traps is not really something to build a whole class around. Why should rockets, the primary weapon of a class that is already good at everything, be the best weapon in the game? Why would you make a game with 8 unique classes that all fill their own niche, and then a ninth class that is just "oh and this guy can do all of those things but better, play him instead"?

Which is why 6v6 teams are always just 6 soldiers? And I'd say area denial and being able to fire on people before you can see them are pretty useful attributes even at the highest level.

Irony Be My Shield posted:Which is why 6v6 teams are always just 6 soldiers? The reason they are not is because there is a limit in the rules of 2 soldiers per team, and because the sticky launcher is currently the best weapon. With the sticky nerf in place and the class limit removed I think you might very well end up with something like 3-4 soldiers, a medic, and a utility.

Soldier is okay at a lot of things, but unless you're on a fairly balanced team he's usually not the best class to be playing. That's the way TF2 works, because all the classes bar soldier are specialists, you need to have the classes that are made to counter the other team's specialists as well. Like on paper, yeah, he's a really strong class, but the way the game is designed means you're constantly running into situations every match where you're really hurting for someone to take out all the enemy sentries, or to stop spies from killing your medic, or to counter the five heavies the other team has. Also, the best festive in the game is the eyelander.
