The meatcube would attract rats who would then gnaw on the server wiring putting the game out of it's misery at long last.

Do it with Dry Ice. They'll have a shattered window, a note about Andorians, and no way of knowing how either happened.

Fold the note into a paper airplane, encase it in dry ice, and then throw it through the window.

This is a nice idea on paper but how do you propose somone encase something in dry ice?

It isn't exactly like you just put some carbon dioxide in a shoe box in the freezer with a note in the middle.

More practical idea is just to break the window with dry ice and then throw the paper airplane through the hole.

That one's been there for a few months now, basically since Delta Rising hit. And maybe before that? I forget.

Since it broke at some point, and Cryptic has no idea how their PVP maps work. Literally no idea. The person who made them left years ago and the code is apparently as much of an incoherent lovely mess as the rest of the launch-era game, so making any fixes basically requires recoding PVP maps and matches from scratch. Which they're not in a big rush to do since nobody gives a gently caress about PVP in STO. This is also the same reason why they haven't released a new PVP map or battlezone since launch either; they don't know how to.

Wonder how honest they're being about the change. Could nerf it into the ground, or just make it marginally less the obvious best choice.

It's annoying, but it will still be far and away the best and only option on cores.

Only real change I guess beyond an overall DPS nerf would be that the obelisk beam+core would now be a competitive choice on under geared AP beamboats that can't reliably keep all four power levels at 75+.

The obelisk also increases max aux power, right? So that should contribute to the nukara offense trait.

Yeah, I think the base AMP bonus is... 3.3% per power level above 75? So if you have all four it's clearly ahead, and it applies to any other effects you'd do besides just antiproton damage.

It's more the hilarious bad decisions that Cryptic Geko made for Delta Rising have been coming home to roost. There was a pretty massive bleed during the month after it came out, and there hasn't been new content in a while. With the queues being pointless or frustrating for your average pubbie, most people stilll "playing" are logging in to do doff jobs, run CCA once for the event, and logging off. There's some maybe-content coming next week, but the core problems of intolerable queues and lovely XP grinds haven't been fixed, so it won't actually solve anything or draw anyone back. And in the meanwhile Cryptic's getting more and more desperate with sales and promotions (to the point of undercutting their future profits for short term gains by doing things like a T6 bugship :laffo:) to further alienate anyone who isn't a crazy whale.

Things could have been fixed early on if the lead developer wasn't a manchild grognard, but by this point the game dying is the new normal and everyone realizes it. And instead of replacing STO's leadership, PWE is doing the (perhaps wiser) move of pulling the competent people off of STO's staff to other games, just making things worse in the long run. Or in other words,

Yeah not only just releasing a T6 Bugship but putting the packs on sale at a 25% discount two weeks into the promo just to boost their numbers at the expense of training customers to just not pay full price for anything.

The root of the doom and gloom is that we have confirmed that the general shittiness of the games current direction is internal to cryptic and not from external pressure from PWE. So no amount of bad numbers will be enough for them to back off since the game is being run by a shitlord who is convinced that he can do no wrong.

This was kind of the turning point for me, where it became inescapably obvious that things weren't getting better and that even the developers were too incompetent to do anything beyond flail around like muppets as the game dies.

I said it when the promo started, but this was basically the worst possible decision for the game's long term finances, and arguably even more so than the broken queues and XP grind. The promotion (lockbox/lobi/pack) ships have always been a "safe" investment in the past, and Cryptic went out of their way to update them to fleet level and then T5U level for free. There's a very good reason for this; you really, really don't want to give buyer's remorse to the whales who spend lots of money on these virtual gambling items. If that remorse happens a year or two after the fact it still leaves a bitter taste and makes them far less likely to drop large sums of money on you in the future. Imagine you're one of those pubbies who spent fifty, a hundred, five hundred, whatever dollars on those dumb packs trying to get a boat, some unreasonable sum of money, and you finally got it. And then a few months later Cryptic up and does a new promotion, with an incrementally better version of the same thing, and the unstated but blatant implication that not only your toy is instantly obsolete but the new one will be similarly obsoleted at some point in the not too distant future.

Who but the most desperate diehard insane fan would give them the time of day after that? Yet this is what Cryptic did with their flagship special promo ship. And then they put the packs on sale almost immediately! It's insane. :psyduck: I can't even imagine how bad their revenue numbers must be at the moment if they made a mistake that big in a desperate attempt to shore them up.

Lagomorphic
Apr 21, 2008

AKA: Orthonormal
Yeah the strike ship itself was pretty badly needed since the old bug was falling too far behind the power curve to be the premium p2w flagship. Not delivering on the "free t6 upgrade" they promised during the last bugship promo and pretending like t5u is just as good is just stupid unless you don't care about the long term health of your game and are just trying to squeeze the last bit of money out of the whales before you shut down for good.

You know, what bothers me is the apologist tone of priority one podcast this morning. They actually got on some expert to say "everything is going to be fine" that the guys posting things to the contrary are just trolls, and that the company is just trying to be come more profitable, or in their words, "raise the margins from 10% o 12%" and that these layoffs were cyclical in nature. They put words in his mouths when he was a MMO specialist and had no real knowledge of STO itself.

What really drives me nuts is when community podcasters just crumble and become fanbois at the expense of the community itself because they are afraid of the dev's/company saying no to future interview requests at the expense of the local podcast.

Guard frequency is a bit more critical than P1P (Star Citizen) but Batgirl (do does community podcasts for SC as well) has gone all gushy with praise over the last six months and has lost that healthy cynicism / realism that is needed.
