Archer exec Matt Thompson posted:

A little over a year ago, FX very kindly invited Adam Reed, Casey Willis, and I to New York City (you can just say New York) for Super Bowl XLVIII. This was the one where the Seahawks ran over the Broncos, not the one where they threw it all away in the final moment. The game was a blow out and for me, the best moment happened on the way to the game.

We were in a group of about forty FX talent, producers, and directors. We had to meet at exactly 9:30 for the buses to pick us up. It was imperative that we be on time as our buses would have a police escort to the stadium in New Jersey. Apparently you really did not want to miss the escort otherwise you are stuck in really long security lines. All forty of us show up on time… and wait.

It seems that our buses were to follow Rupert Murdoch’s bus, joining his police motorcade. I am fully aware that I just name dropped Mr. Murdoch, but please know that I am just a guy in Atlanta that makes a cartoon with lots of farts and boobies. I know this. But for that moment, I am sitting there with all of the other FX people (the hilarious The League cast was cracking everyone up), waiting on our benefactor to get rolling. As we all sat on the bus, people started to get a little antsy and a little bored. Matthew Rhys from The Americans graciously decided to entertain us all with a real life story from his homeland of Wales.

Matthew told us about the Free Wales Army from the 1960’s. They hated the English and attempted to bomb critical pieces of British infrastructure. The problem was they were a little bit bumbling and only succeeded in blowing themselves up. Twice. Matthew had us all laughing our asses off and, on the spot, Adam promised to turn his story into an Archer script starring Mr. Rhys. This coming Thursday is that episode and for the very first time in our show’s history, it contains the slightly odd writing credit of “Written by Adam Reed. Story inspired from a Rousing Tale by Matthew Rhys.”

Maybe the old woman reminded Elizabeth of her mother? What the hell happened this episode? You've got Oleg's Snidely Whiplash costume, Martha is all chipper about being a spy, Elizabeth's trainee dropping off the news about murdering a student on her doorstep like a cat with a sparrow for its owner, and Elizabeth wanting to a have a chat with an old woman in the middle of an operation. I can deal with some impulsive behaviors from the characters, but why is everyone being ridiculous in the same episode?

LostRook

The old women even mentioned Elizabeth's mother so that was clearly the connection, not to mention that Elizabeth's father also fought in WW2, IIRC. Oleg just wanted the chance to crack Stan's skull and Martha is buying a house in Denialville. Nothing ridiculous, just a bunch of people reaching their respective limits.

Preemptive edit: I know Oleg wants more than that. He obviously also wants to drink beer with Stan as they go on a road trip.

It's a tie with the necklacing. The only thing that would've put the pill scene over the top is if Elizabeth physically put the last four pills in the old woman's mouth and poured the water down her throat.

A communist would be amazing at Monopoly. The goal is to take over everything and bring everyone into a collective - rent is a regrettable yet necessary capitalist notion that would be abolished after *everyone* is allowed to live on Boardwalk and Park Place*.

* only loyal Party apparatchiks will ever get to live on Boardwalk and/or Park Place, plus they will be the only people ever allowed to pass "Go," albeit with chaperones.

Presumably because we don't live in an age where everyone just shoves earbuds on and blasts the volume to do desk work, she would've heard the two of them working in the shop downstairs and called the police. Since she saw it was an old rear end old lady, it probably would've been super easy to control the situation.

Also because the whole thing was awesome.

I dont thing it was that bad. Martha knows its Clark or bust and thinks love is more important than giving away a few things. Its not like she can get great intel from office gossip now. New report Agent Gaat is mad! It seems they thing Martha can re bug they place I guess when the heat dies down? Her character contiunes to breath despite the fact she should be dead.

Hans is too good to be written out. I kinda thought Eliz was testing him though her later conversation doenst support it. Hi I trained you for the cause but becasue that 1 guy knows your face you cant do your job. So of course Hans would off em, you wouldnt make much of a spy without that kind of mentality.

Eliz problably enjoyed getting stuffoff her chest to somoene who reminds her of her mother. Bad luck to work at night while spies are there and not in costume and you want to ideally kill the woman and make it look like a heart attack or suicide rather than a gun shoot to the face.

Olegs costume was kinda hilrious though, he loves American culture and sure he loved dressing up and smacking Stan. Stan has form for crazy stuff he went to that secret radar place with a camera strapped to him for Nina.

The most ridiculous thing seems to be bugging the robot, If it was a Roomba going everywhere that would be slightly a better idea.

When this show blows up years from now (probably after it gets put on Netflix) I'll be boasting that I liked it before it was cool :smug:.

So are we supposed to assume that Phillip has been continuing his Kimmy mission off-screen, since he's supposed to be collecting the bug recordings every week? Dear god I don't think I'll mind if they just never reference that sub-plot again :gonk:.

I think the Kimmy deal is just one of those bits where the show assumes you know that it's still going on even without showing it until the story becomes relevant again, like swedish suitcase lady's 3 episodes over 3 seasons plotline.

I guess I'm a robot because the old woman scenes didn't bother me at all. I was hoping Elizabeth would just kill her already so the boring poo poo would end.

The scene with Hans and the guy from last week running around after being shot in the eye was horrifying though. Goddamn.

Liz had to make the old lady death seem like an accident/suicide. Strangling her or shooting her would've raised a whole shitload of red flags and started an investigation into her death.

So... what exactly is Martha telling herself, exactly? Phillip never explained anything to her. Is it just "Okay, he's a Russian spy, but I still love him"? Love conquers all. Martha is on board with the espionage at this point and as long as she stays on board she's more valuable than ever.

I'm not sure that it's love motivating Martha to act the way she is right now, calculated self-preservation could also easily explain her whole "I just wanna drop it & don't care who you really are" followed by eager volunteering of FBI info Clark hadn't even thought to ask for yet.
