Although it's not like that's uncommon in our media.

Oh, a comment from Winston, anything to keep him in the headlines. And he's already suggested Key has a fetish. What are Winston's psych qualifications again? And what would an objective analysis of Winston tell us?

If anything I'd be raging about Stuff's headline about how the waitress decided to "expose" the PM. And that's not me putting it in quote marks, that's them putting her word into quote marks. Instantly leads you to question the motivation of the waitress in going public. Seems worse than anything I've seen in the Herald on it.

Okay well me being wrong in some limited situations doesn't change my overall point.
I am pretty unimpressed with the headlines - they are all leaning towards casting suspicion on the waitress' motivations or Minimising the pm's motivations.

The headline should be "pm sexually harasses waitress".

Headlines change as stories develop. The only place that was carrying it before the apology was out was The Daily Blog. When the PM apologises, that becomes the headline. It's also when most media outlets picked it up.

Also if the headline is sexual assault then a shitload of discussion becomes "was it or wasnt it" "i dont think it's that bad" "pc gone mad" etc etc. Having that not be the headline will lead to more productive discussion imo (not that that was the intent of the people doing the headlines, of course)

You did a good job of going the next step and digging into the philosophy behind why that poo poo was definitely an abuse of power and why she didn't say anything at the time. The initial Herald story was run before the PM got off his plane and commented on the matter. The headline was "John Key sorry after waitress accuses him of bullying, pulling her pony-tail" which has since been edited to "John Key: Pony-tail pulling 'just horsing around'".

Ah, odd. I saw the "John Key sorry..." and assumed it was put up as a result of a comment he made in the stand-up. Although I wouldn't be surprised if the comms team knew it was coming and had the apology ready to go because he was going to be in the air.

It was literally because in her account she says he said sorry and gave her bottles of wine. So by Herald logic he'd already apologised for the event before it even became known.

Glucina is such a terrible person, sad it's legal for a journalist to pretend to be someone else like that :(

the updated headline/story thing is something I really hate about the NZ media. Every update just edits the original story with no indication of when it was originally posted, and often the entire body of the article is changed as well.

We should be talking about how the media itself discourages women from coming forward and making complaints about sexual harassment, because they then pull poo poo like this.

I made this post on the 28th of March:

NZAmoeba posted:

John Key was just at the cafe where I'm having breakfast. He looked like he was having a really poo poo day.

That cafe I saw him at wasn't Rosie's, it was a different cafe.

quote:

Saturday, 28th March, came and his security personnel were in for their morning coffee. Upon leaving one of them asked me “how was the wine?”

quote:

A source told the Herald Mr Key had been going to the cafe for years and would regularly enjoy "banter" with the staff on his Friday morning and Saturday afternoon visits.

Instead of going to his usual place every Saturday afternoon, after he had been confronted by the waitress he was clearly embarrassed enough to try somewhere else.

Mr Key could also be investigated for common assault for "hostile touching" if police received a complaint, he said.

Auckland University criminology and sociology lecturer Dr Ronald Kramer said Mr Key's unwanted physical actions put the vulnerable waitress in a powerless position where she was unable to "fight back".

"You have to remember this is an older white male with a lot of power doing something like this to a woman who is presumably young, in a difficult job, and presumably on low pay."

Dr Kramer said people in powerful positions such as the prime minister's often did not think about how their actions affected others.

It depends on the thing they did, and it also doesn't have to be that person. Realistically anyone could complain to the cops about what happened and they'd have to investigate it.
