Tools are the only way spectrals can affect non-spectral elements using powers. The ink produced by Ed's paintbrush is a spectral thing (not being the actual possessed paintbrush), and thus can't be seen, but as a tool product can touch and push around non-spectral stuff - see him using it as a washing line in his room.

That's actually interesting, because it looks like most spirits can't affect physical things with their powers (or at least the town doesn't have as many weird things happening as it should if they can), so a spectral actually provides something unique to the merger instead of being either a parasite or a parasite's host.

If your wardrobe was possessed with spirits of the correct colour, would getting dressed give you a smorgasbord of ghost powers?

Isaac's powers create actual electricity or something I think, and Isabel controlled actual paper, as part of the tool itself, so those are both visible to normal people. Ed's ink is established as invisible to normal people, with the "Paranatural Activity Club" sign back from the beginning, meanwhile. Starchman may have seen Isabel's paper, but unless he's a spectral he didn't see the paint.

Cody strikes me as an inverse Isaac--he seems equally anime, capable, but his personality is vastly improved as well. I wonder if this is significant--maybe Isaac is an anime red herring, and will be killed off early to make room for the new true anime, who is of course a proper pretty boy. We can only hope that Cody and Isaac have a anime-off. Honestly, the whole Isaac coming under the tutelage over this overly-moralistic apostle for an anonymous "lady" reminds me of Lyserg from Shaman King, so I'm a little worried for him. Hell, let's see if we can get as many analogues as possible. Max = Yoh, doesn't really give a poo poo compared to everyone else PJ = Morty, weakling who wants to be a hero like Max/Yoh Johnny = Ryu, rear end in a top hat bully who is amazing and awesome Isaac = Lyserg, ridiculously anime, overly vindictive Isabel = Horohoro/Trey/Whatever, likes to fight, generally chill Ed = Joco, tries to be random and make everyone laugh Doorman = Marco, takes Isaac/Lyserg under his wing, etc. Whatever keeps possessing Max = Hao, has creepy dual relationship with protagonist ????? = Tao Ren, which is distressing since Ren is my favorite character, to be introduced later???? Spender = Silva, supposed to be a mentor, kinda sucks at it a little bit Consortium = Patch Tribe Checks out, for the most part.
