The correct way to cook hotdogs is to stick them in boiling water until you think they're probably hot enough, and preferably get them out before they split. They're garbage food, they don't deserve anything more.

They're garbage food, they don't deserve anything more. Wrong, my friend. Behold the Char Dog. A variation on the Chicago Dog, with the all-beef wiener blackened and split on a too-hot grill. The carbon and smoke play against the overload of traditional toppings for a surprisingly subtle effect. The Chicago Dog is worth a whole post on it's own. I'm seriously considering a PYF Hot Dog thread, if only to assert the superiority of the only hot dog that is cool and good.

I'm going to submit an awesome, and a pretty good food, both of which look less than great, for your delectation. First, Pease Pudding (found a really good looking picture, oddly enough.) It's made by putting split peas in damp cheesecloth and boiling the bag for a couple hours before taking it out and spicing it. I had tonnes of it every thanksgiving as a kid, with gravy. Way better than mashed potatoes. Second, Brewis and Scrunchions. Brewis is made by taking hard bread (a type of biscuit meant to last for long periods at sea) and leaving it to soak in water for a day to soften it. Once it is softened, it is boiled until tender and strained. To add flavour to it, as it is about as flavourless on it's own as you would expect it to be, it is served with scrunchions. Scruncheons are fried salt pork, which along with the rendered fat is used to top the brewis. Tiberius Thyben has a new favorite as of 10:40 on May 28, 2015 |

I guess poor people food is similar everywhere, in the southern Balkans you have popara which is old, hardened bread boiled with water or milk eaten mostly with cheese / kajmak but sometimes salted, rendered fat and paprika is an option too. It can look a hell of a lot more unappetizing than this too, just GIS it. e: I forgot to say, despite the looks I still love it dearly. SaltyJesus has a new favorite as of 10:39 on May 28, 2015 |
