But they also sound exactly like middle of the road (but broodal) Incantation (without Incantation's gift for creating instantly memorable riffs) buried beneath a level of dissonance that isn't nearly as interesting as several of the bands they're immediately going to be bracketed with (some of whom are already intensely boring). Point taken. But I disagree that their dissonance isn't interesting - I think their vocal style in particular is pretty different and cool. Out of curiosity, which of the bands that Pissgrave will be compared to do you consider boring?

The Clit Avoider posted:[edit] In fact, when I think about it, this has a lot in common with Ulver - absolutely (deliberately) terrible mastering and production. Much like what Ulver did with Nattens Madrigal. If they'd produced this cleanly it'd probably sound like early Kronos

A little late but I don't really get the hate for Portal. I always ignored them but lately I've been listening to Vexovoid and its scratching an itch. Their aesthetic is cool too, I don't care.

Also, metal goons hate things news at 11.

Don't get me wrong. I like Portal's aesthetics and imagery. Their music is reflective of that. Pissgrave just comes across as a third rate Portal / Incantation impostor to me. It's boring and contrived. While I've never seen Portal live, I imagine they sound the same exact way live as they do on their albums. Where as Pissgrave are just trying really too hard to muddy the production after recording. I could be wrong. With what Portal has done, it doesn't seem necessary to spawn countless impostors just yet. I think The Clit Avoider sums it up best.

There's a new Wolfheart album out on August 21st (Shadow World) to fill your Saukkonen melodeath riffing needs (Before the Dawn, Black Sun Aeon ). This is a good song, though I don't think it quite compares to the best on Winterborn ( see The Hunt, that plays immediately after Aeon of Cold in this Vevo link ). http://vevo.ly/EXxps1

Some good stuff on the last couple of pages. I'm getting into metal, never been a huge fan, but I've always loved Dio, Pantera and any kind of 80's shred. (Paul Gilbert and the like) Any suggestions, besides the new Europe album? Guitar playing is key and if it has vocals, I really don't like bloodgargling death sounds, although sometimes I do. what

Holy poo poo, new Istapp! Full stream here, album release August 7th! https://soundcloud.com/trollzorn/sets/istapp-frostbiten-full-album I never know how to classify these guys, I guess it's swedish melodic guitar-centric slightly punky blackish metal that's super catchy and awesome and kind of unique in sound and tone with occasional clean vocals that rule?

Baron Von Ghoulosh posted:While I've never seen Portal live, I imagine they sound the same exact way live as they do on their albums. They do and they don't. I had to revisit my opinion of them after catching them live a few times. The issue with Portal on cd/lp is that you're almost listening to a soundtrack for Lovecraft, and like an OST, without the visual companion, it can get tiresome very, very quickly. Especially on an album like Swarth which is almost devoid of actual non-disjointed riffs. Live, it's a bit of a nightmare opera. Lovecraft meets Nightmare on Bald Mountain. There's camp elements (like there are in any old horror movies etc) to the music you don't even realise are there in the recording, but come across in the live show.

I feel like these guys really made a mistake with the production(Metal Blade though, not surprising), it's just a bit too polished and tame. I just couldn't get into that album. Too many softer ballad type tracks and not much that was very memorable. They could have easily cut it down to 40 minutes, it's way too bloated.

Nordick posted:Never heard of these guys before, but this is good poo poo. Kinda reminding me of something but I can't quite get a grasp of what it is. It's kinda like.... it has little bits and bobs of Wintersun? and Finntroll and some other stuff thrown in, just without any of the pomp or weird folky stuff. Yeah that's the problem I always have. They're somehow one of the most original sounding black metal (??) bands out there, I can never put my finger on how to describe them or what they sound like. Take my favourite song from their first album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3dhqV3-R80 There's almost that punky kind of riff in the beginning but then it slows down and gets melodic, then the clean chorus comes in and there's a little bit of keyboards and...they do this weird mix of stripped down/raw guitar but then throw in these random bits of beautiful melody ( love the chorus so much ). [edit] - maybe it's just the drums that keep making me think punk, but at times it's a bit like Impaled Nazarene and you're right, a bit Wintersun and Finntroll maybe without the folk/cheese? I get a lot of Nord-era Setherial with some of the riffs too...They list their influences as Arckanum, Sorhin and Dissection, so I don't know, it's awesome.
