Modern hipsters started as the bohemian quasi-European subculture in New York City's West Village and Greenwich Village, mixed with similar subcultures in working class London neighborhoods where the new generation of young tech and media workers moved in. It really was "hip" in the Villages to be in that bohemian lifestyle, and like many NYC cultures it became popular enough to spread.
