I mean literally one of the first things you see in the movie is Ricky from Trailer Park Boys with a manhole cover on his head. e: Also, mean-spiritedness doesn't necessarily come from violent subject matter. I'd actually argue that Man Bites Dog is all that mean-spirited; it's pretty much a message piece along the lines of Natural Born Killers about how the media needs to stop glorifying horrible poo poo, not just pure nihilism. Henry definitely counts, though, and I'd also say Visitor Q, Killer Joe, Quills, Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Salo, and The Mist are good examples: they're all, at the heart of it, films about how humanity loving sucks and we should dehumanize ourselves and face to bloodshed. I shamefully admit that tonight I watched Jacob's Ladder for the first time and I don't know why I waited so long. I was genuinely moved/scared and it's been a while since a movie has done that to me. My father passed away over the weekend and maybe my longing for escape into something else made it that much more powerful, or maybe it just is a really loving good movie. Either way, really glad I watched it.

I used to be fine with them, but as I get older, I personally find that my taste for them fades. As I see more and more actual cruelty, tragedy, and horror in life, those types of movies feel less and less like escapism, and they have nothing new to teach me about man's inhumanity to man, so they just end up being an exercise in watching people get thrown into a meat grinder. I used to go out of my way to see "SHOCKING" stuff in highschool like Henry PoaSK and such, but it doesn't really appeal to me now a decade later. Conjuring, It Follows, Sinister, all enjoyable. Reading about a woman's gums being flossed bloody by some kids was enough to make me skip another recent one though. Who knows the psychological implications.

Henry is way more than shock for shock's sake though, that movie's a masterpiece. almost certainly the best serial killer movie of all time (and definitely better than the one that swept the Oscars a couple years later)

The introduction of The Plague is one of the few times I've actually felt really uneasy about what I've been seeing in a movie. I keep wishing Jason Eisener would make a sequel, or something similar. I liked his segments in VHS2 and ABC's of Death, but of course, neither was anywhere close to being a feature film.

I agree with you on that. It's still gently caress YEAH it's just a really upset, dismayed gently caress YEAH. Those two are like the daft punk of murder, and they completely steal the show. I have a hard time leaving them out when I describe the movie, but I feel I should because they make a really fantastic surprise.

I can enjoy some wanton violence done creatively or in service of the film, but almost everything lacked any kind of heart. Things like crushing the homeless guys head with the bumper cars, or burning all of the children in the bus; nothing about them was very engaging, just off putting. I felt like The Plague worked a hell of a lot better because they seemed to fit the tone I had hoped the movie was going to be. Very cartoonish and detached from reality. Obviously a lot of the movie was over the top, but there was just very little enjoyment to be had and I really don't think the filmmakers were trying to go for a message of "you enjoy this? you're sick!", it felt like they wanted to go for "check this poo poo out". Going around stringing random hospital employees is pretty hosed up, but since they didn't do it with the glee the other bad guys had when doing their acts it just wasn't as stomach turning. The film also did a good job of presenting The Plague as having a well developed mythos that it just wasn't going to show you. Maybe the duo couldn't hold a whole movie together but I found them a hell of a lot more interesting than the sons. There is maybe 15ish minutes of Hobo that is pretty great and the rest was trash I didn't enjoy at all. It felt a lot like eating a bad granny smith apple. I went in hoping for a hosed up sour experience, but instead all I got was bitter disappointment.

I don't have a screenshot handy, but their wall of kills includes Joan of Arc and a T-Rex. Because of my age, Hobo with a Shotgun might as well be made for me. Its influences are things that were core to my childhood, the tone of it resembles movies I got from the bottom shelf of my local VHS rental store, and there's even direct references to my favorite NES game of all time all over it. Maybe I wouldn't love it so much without all those factors, but I dunno. Almost every line in the movie is a classic quote to me, I love the soundtrack, I love the disgusting attitudes of the bad guys, and I love all the gore. The only, ONLY scene I have a problem with is when Abby gives her big speech after gearing up, because it's too cheesy and dumb even for a movie that's a near-comedy. Rutger Hauer does a really good job of making the hobo sympathetic through his body language, especially in those early scenes. He's obviously a disturbed individual, but all he expects from the world is some basic humanity, and Scum Town can't even manage that. By the way, though it might never happen, the two plans for a sequel are 1) Hobo in Hell, where the Hobo has to fight his way out of hell after the events of the first film, or 2) A Plague movie, either about Rip finding a replacement for Grinder, or about their history.

I've never done to much looking into his past so I assume there's something to explain it, but he always seemed a a fantastic actor that just kind got poo poo on and forced to do bad roles (Ever see Split Second? [man I wanted to like that movie too, but drat is it dull]). He is definitely a big part of the good 15 minutes of Hobo, but it just wasn't enough for me.
