Much easier if you just add some gelatin to your cum vase. It shapes it quite nicely into a flan.

I'm more surprised that someone who can't bake fries even knows what parchment paper is in the first place... then again, they're baking fries instead of actually frying them so ehh

I know it is done sometimes, I had a neighbour where I grew up who burned down her house in a chip pan fire. But it's definitely not common. Either way, those are some badly cooked oven chips.

It's really not something that gets done very often here (in the home at least) to the best of me knowledge. It's not very dangerous to fry at home if you use a thermometer and don't have a seizure when you move the pan. I mean, you cook food every day in cripplingly hot conditions, right? If you can manipulate a pan full of onions or whatever, you can heat up some oil on the stove. Strange that it's barely heard of there. I assumed Britons would be into frying stuff at home.

It does seem like whenever a British person talks about cooking something, it's all in an electric kettle or in a tiny pan on a "hob". Are you guys scared of heat, or too drunk to cook?

We fry stuff, but we don't generally deep fry stuff much, and do a lot more cooking in the oven or grill/broiler than in the US I think. We shallow fry a decent amount. Are you guys scared of heat, or too drunk to cook? Electric kettles is a whole different thing, they're entirely for boiling water for tea (and occasionally coffee), which is basically a national pastime. Some people also use them to heat water quickly for cooking generally, as they're usually more efficient and quicker than boiling water from cold on the hob/stovetop, for pasta, rice etc. Also, I gather they're a LOT beefier than the average US electric kettle. We mostly use tiny pans because we make smaller portions, and have less space generally, given that we have about 1/6th the population of the US crammed into less than 1/100th the area. I don't know why we don't deep fry much, to be honest. I've never really thought about it.

I think that everything is a little more cramped in England; seems that way, at least, since when they show even "rich" people's houses, they feel much more compact than the standard low-rent apartment in the US. We're kind of spoiled when it comes to kitchen space than our friends across the pond.

You'd think Americans would love oven chips since you have to do zero work to get good fluffy inside/crispy outside chips. But then I remember they don't double-dip them when they fry them so they are always gross soggy trash and welp

Do people actually deep fry things on a regular basis? I've never known anyone to go to the trouble of deep fat frying french fries. I think the big thing for me is that deep frying seems to make the entire kitchen, your clothes, your hair, etc. just stink like used frying oil. Note: I did deep fry pizza rolls once and I vowed to never do it again because they were too delicious and I didn't want to die of a heart attack before 30. So I have no problems with deep frying in general!

If you seal the oil well and refrigerate it, you can keep using the same oil for a bit, so I tend to deep fry nothing most of the time, then do all sorts of deep frying when I do any. Deep fried peaches are a treat.
