There's a service you can use to buy gas at current prices for future use. I looked into it a while back but it sounds like a slight PITA. There's a small fee but iirc the way it works is you buy X amount at current price plus the fee, then when gas goes back up you can use your credits and get reimbursed the difference or something?

Ok found it, these guys:

Re: computer chat, I'm currently playing through FO3 with FWE installed because my current card can't run FO4. I have a HD7770 which was a budget replacement for my old HD4870 that died about a year ago, and has been serviceable up until now for pretty much every major title I've thrown at it. A coworker has a HD7950 3 GB he's looking to get rid of (had three of them in a triple crossfire setup, but the third card almost never had >10% utilization and was causing glitches), but it seems like there's always something more important to spend the $75 he wants for it on.

Once I update my GPU I'm going to leave the balance of my system alone until this time next year. While a Phenom II x6 is hardly cutting edge it works well enough for what I need it to do, and I want to see if AMD's Zen architecture lives up to the hype before jumping on the Intel bandwagon, and even if Zen is a wash by then the 6xxx Intel CPUs and DDR4 will have dropped in price.

My wife and I have had some issues in the last few weeks with HBO Now buffering incessantly through our Roku TV. We have TWC and their "extreme" internet which should be up to 50 Mbps down. Neither of us own a computer, just our phones/tablets, and I did a couple speed tests through my phone and got between a whopping .5 and 1 Mbps per test. I called Time Warner and the guy remotely reset my modem, I reset my router, and afterwards the speed test was pulling down around 7 Mbps. He said it was probably due to my router, which is an admittedly rather old Linksys WRT54G. Could this really be the cause of such slow speeds? It's really irritating. Do I need to upgrade the firmware in the router to get the speeds I"m paying for, or what? I really don't feel like dropping cash on a new router with a bunch of bells and whistles. All tech nerd advice welcome.

Are you running your Roku wired or wireless? If it's the latter I would guess your router's 802.11G radio is the source of your problem, especially if you're sharing the WiFi connection with multiple devices simultaneously. If possible connect the Roku with an ethernet cable and see if it improves.

Yes. That thing is ancient and the maximum wireless throughput it could ever possibly have in ideal laboratory conditions is 54Mbps. There's a home networking thread in SH/SC but if you've gotten this far with that old WRT, you will probably be happy with nearly anything on the market today. Pick a budget, get a wireless router from TP-Link, Asus, or Netgear, be done with it.

Even if you use the Roku on wired, the WRT54G is only capable of about 20Mbps between LAN and WAN.

A 2005 review of that router posted:

If 20Mbps isn't good enough for you, then I'm not sure you should be using a consumer-class router!

Plugging a generic gigabit wired router + a Unifi AP again. Wired gigabit routers are cheap and robust, and a single unifi is a lot cheaper, by about half, than all-in-one wireless routers with the same thoroughput. Overall it can be less expensive, but enterprise level robust.

One of my two younger brothers (they are twins) came down to AZ to visit with my mother and I made the 2 hour trek north of Phoenix to crash too. We had a good time. Lots of booze, reliving our chaotic childhood while driving by old stomping grounds. On the night before I leave we're drunkenly bullshitting when my brother says he doesn't know what he's going to do about our brother. Now, those two lived together for years. From college up until they were 30. The older finally wanted to settle down with his SO and asked the younger to finally get his own place. The younger brother has always been a bit rash and hot headed but fully capable at life despite his flailing about. As far as I knew at least. I guess I was dead wrong. He's apparently semi homeless, his truck tossed a rod a few days ago, been really bad at work and drinks $50-100 worth of booze a night only to wake up god knows where. The older straight up told me he doesn't know what to do and wouldn't be surprised if he chose to off himself.

We've both tried helping him emotionally and financially but when we do it's always "gently caress you, i'll do it on my own" and he disappears for a few days. The older had to kick him out because it was destroying the relationship with his SO and I have every confidence that if I took him in it would do the exact same to me and my SO. We kind of agreed to try and convince him indirectly that maybe he should move back home with mom to figure out his demons but I don't think it's going to end well. All 3 of us have struggled with severe alcoholism and depression but he's taking on too much water.

Good thing about Unifi, at least when I set mine up last year, is the client auto updates at first run, and forces you to change the password. Pretty baller for them to do so, but it is an enterprise solution, so

We're going through a similar thing with my fiancee's dad. For background information: he was a Mexican immigrant in the late 70's, became a Marine for citizenship, never followed through with the citizenship paperwork after his tour, and started slumming as a "handyman" in Phoenix. Late 80's, he meets my fiancee's mom, and they have her. Now, this is a combination of bad factors, but my fiancee's mom is a "the government puts radios in your teeth"-level of crazy, and she kidnapped my fiancee at age 5 from her father in Phoenix and moved to New York, but I guess it was kind of justified, as he was the type of person to be in and out of jail repeatedly every month or six.

Now we moved back here to Phoenix 3 years ago and tried to reconnect with him. He still does the "handyman" stuff, works as a bouncer some nights at seedy bars, etc. He's getting older but still doesn't have a driver's license, so he rides a motorized bicycle around town all year.

While I was on deployment apparently he asked to stay for a few days at our place, which I'm always open to. Bro's gotta have a place to shower, amirite? Anyway, while I was gone a few days turned into a few months, which is no bueno, as he was sleeping on the couch, which is where I sleep 3 days of the week due to our different schedules. He's also the type of person that doesn't really talk in complete sentences, and mumblegrowls things in response to you, like that guy on King of the Hill but even less talkative.

It took a few weeks for me to kick him out. I told him, and told my fiancee to tell him, that all he needs to do to stay here pretty much permanently is to ask me every Sunday if he can crash here, and tell me what days he will do so. This lets me free up my schedule on the days he would be gone to do big projects, like mop or drywall or whatever. More importantly, it prevents us from creating a renter/landlord relationship where he can claim he has been living here permanently for more than 90 days, which would make me legally unable to kick him out if I needed to. Otherwise I was fine with this, and I believed it to be a pretty fair compromise to help a guy back on his feet.

Instead, what this motherfucker did, was show up about 30 minutes after I went to work each day (1300), sleep/do whatever while I was at work, and he would magically leave 10 minutes before I got home. SO, for weeks, I couldn't contact this guy. I told elizabeth to keep him out, but he had a key to our place, and because he is her father, it was difficult for her to do that, which I understand.

After a few weeks of this bullshit, I changed the front lock to the house, and left a note saying that he could call us (we bought him tracfone cards, and gave him a special older tracfone that triples any minutes and time you put onto it, so a 60 minute card becomes 180 minutes of talktime. I also got him a solar charger because, well, he's homeless) to let him in, because all I needed to do was have a 2-minute conversation with him before he came back inside, and all would be good. Instead, he disappeared into the night, and we haven't heard from him sense.

gently caress that guy.

E: I forgot about that time he left his backpack in the bathroom once, and because I'm a bad person, before calling him to let him know we had it I opened it up and it was full of heroin needles. That was when I put my foot down and changed the locks, because even though there was no evidence he did it in the house, I still cannot abide.

E2: Also we finally got him to apply for VA disability, drove him to the appointments when needed, and sorted his mail out so he could get appointment cards. Turns out he got dropped off by us at the doctor, then hosed off and did heroin or something because they all sent letters stating that they missed him, weeks later.
