Started on the Thunderbolt manga to see if the anime's worth making a fuss over, and I like it. It's blunt, unsubtle melodrama ('I don't love you any more - if I could order you to die, I would!' - an actual line) with really cool fights and tons of style and atmosphere, and the mechanical designs are ugly but in a fun way - this is two worn-out military units fighting over incredibly hostile territory in the rear end-end of nowhere, so everything's bodged-together and covered in redundant kit. The flavour is strong but tasty.

I am 13 episodes into G Reco Review of the series thus far:  It is a very surreal show. Character seem to walk around as if they're in a dream, oddly carefree and happy go lucky despite their circumstances. the kind of show where you can just sort of go anywhere and do anything, and nobody really minds so much the setting is really good but it's hard so far to delineate what earth Su-Cordists know, what they suspect, and what they propagate to the masses. Now that I am meeting the third faction, who I thought's existence was pretty suspect by some parties, everyone seems to be pretty chill with it. Is that because they knew, or a product of the show's eternally breezy characterization? tomino's idiosyncracies are definitely strong in this one the gundams are okay and i like the color switching

yeah, that's definitely a reading i've considered it's also explicitly leveled at different factions in the 'me it's just hard to tell what's text and what's tomino's idiosyncrasies sometimes, as i'm usually always quirking my eyes at his characters' behaviors in one show or another

G-Reco depicts a society that has been regressed into a weird form of innocence because of the way it was reorganized in the wake the big UC ending calamity. The way the characters glide around comes from them sort of winging this whole "conflict" thing because of how foreign it is to them. Bellri's "Hey lemme go and break this prisoner out of jail and go along for the ride with her because she's kinda cute!" comes from a person from a place where things like danger, political intrigue, and espionage are just not in the cultural consciousness.

More Thunderbolt info It's going to be four episodes, the first releases on December 24-25. no info on where it's being released, only viewing options mentioned are digital download/rental. also it's a bit short at 18 minutes, with an additional 10 minute making-of doc being released simultaneously.

The guntanks later on had an odd sense of weight but I definitely agree that the space battle at the beginning looked pretty fine. The CG in the 2nd episode looked much better in that regard, and CG really helped out with all those cables attached to the mechs. It's a minor detail but hell, I appreciated it.

I've never watched an episode of iron blooded orphans. How do the mobile suit designs stand up to other series? The graze looks a little silly and not too intimidating but I think that has to do with the piece below the head frame looking like its part of the frame. It makes the suit look like the head is oversized and sunk into the neck

I will say IBO is a very good show in general though and i recommend you watch it.

I really wish they would have just come out about Guin being gay earlier in the series. Waiting until literally the last episode to use it as a plot twist always sat kind of wrong with me. Also he needed even more fancy, cool suits. He is still the best dressed character in all of Gundam to this day. Like he should have rivaled the number of suits De Niro wore in Casino.

Guin having a crush on Loran and being unable to accept him as a guy was a thing since the time they met. It's not like he started calling him Laura by the end of the series, he fully knew Loran was a dude yet kept calling him Laura during the entirety of it. Guin losing it was a later thing, yes, but that he clearly denied Loran's gender was something that was there for the whole series.

It's been a couple of years since I watched Turn A, but I remember thinking that Guin had a similar obsession with Loran as Treize did with the pilots in Wing, and that at first Guin legitimately believed Loran was a woman, then kept running with it because he didn't want to admit to making a mistake. It honestly just seemed to me that Guin was "WTF TOMINO" weird rather than gay.

I don't think it's very much of a stretch to say that Guin was gay, attracted to Loran and conflicted about how to handle it in a society that probably wasn't very open to the concept of gay men. This handily explains all of the Loran/Laura thing and is a lot more interesting than "lol, Tomino is weird."
