POD just came up on netflix. It's got maybe 7 characters if I stretch my guesstimate? Low budget horror/thriller which vacilates whildly between "that was embarassingly shoddy" and "actually that was kind of a well-done scene and/or novel take on the trope." I have no idea why at the end, Smith was wearing loving clown shoes as he walked down the slope.. Those looked like size 15+ shoes good god. The final closing scene was entirely unnecessary and dragged the almost-saved ending back down into solid 2- land.

Hasn't it been up for at least 2-4 months? I remember seeing it up on there before my last roommate moved out. I am still not sure what it's about, I tried starting to watch it but I wasn't sure if it was some kind of "The Happening" thing where the little girl was about to get eaten or if it was a buddy movie about a girl who befriends ALL the animals (and then kills everybody else?) I turned it off, can't even say why, at this point.

I watched it the other day and the ending was so forgettable that I actually don't remember what happened.

It had some allright ideas, but I thought it was pretty bad in general. Entertaining enough for one watch though.

Broadchurch season 2 stuff I was also confused by most of the season. The trial was pretty unexpected and completely outrageous. I'm sure trials are a bit different than they are in the US, but just completely throwing out the confession and the defense building a case only on speculation the entire time is idiotic. The old case Hardy was on was uninteresting too, I never felt like I really cared about it. Uhhg, why didn't they just convict Joe and have a new case for season two? Or at least make his prior case better, not some half bit side story.

I chalked a lot of what I didn't like about Broadchurch to not understanding the British legal system. However, the defense's argument against the cell phone & laptop would have been shredded by even a law school dropout. The argument was even though there's a burner cell phone purchased by Joe, only called by Joe's cell, and emails to the kid's email sent and signed by Joe, somehow there's reasonable doubt since they can't prove that Joe had the phone/laptop in hand when the calls/texts/emails are sent. As if he's being framed by the WORLD'S GREATEST PICKPOCKET/CAT BURGLAR.

Thanks to whoever recommended Electric Boogaloo earlier. It was great, and it blows my mind how many of their films I watched growing up. It also reminded me that Invaders from Mars is a movie that exists. Some of the scenes in that were pretty freaky to a 10 year old (teacher swallowing the frog).

Also, Catherine Mary Stewart still looks amazing.

Netflix recently added a really good documentary called The Thread, which is about an Internet manhunt for the Boston bombers. It's a fascinating look not only at vigilante justice in the Internet era, but also how this affected real news sources like CNN and "real" news sources like Buzzfeed, and why the immediacy of Internet news is not the best thing in the world. It's only an hour long, so definitely check it out.

Patrick Wilson talk? The guy is one of my favorite actors, and I am not sure why. I know he is no Christian Bale or Daniel Day Lewis, but for some reason he just plays a pefect average guy. Also when talking about good movies with him in it, you forgot to mention the amazing Little Children.

I thought she was ok in the Spiderman movies, and I always took her as a good actor (she was an amazing child actor in Interview With a Vampire and even ER). I think it was more her lack of good movie choices since the Spider-man movies. Also I know that Lady Gaga's Golden Globe nod was all the talk, but it would be crime if Kirsten Dunst doesn't win that category. She has been amazing this season.

So yes go watch Fargo. Both seasons are amazing.

Yeah, the silliness is really what I responded to. It kind of reminds me of some 50s sci-fi, where the straight-faced camp and melodrama pair well with some really interesting technical work (and a few muddled but obvious big messages)

The Fall and and Happy Valley are better than the good parts of Broadchurch. Happy Valley I remember going from happy police show to super grim dark quite quickly.

I also started a few episodes of River and think it has potential to be good. Has a Skarsgard in it.

Both Broadchurch and Black Mirror have been described as dark but I felt they crossed over into misanthropy. Black Mirror in particular was well done technically but unpleasant to watch. British television needs to talk some stuff out :ohdear:

The murder of the week type stuff becomes less and less prominent as the show goes on. It was barely noticeable in the third season and the fourth season Netflix did only had like three cases and a lot of it was heavily interrelated. That show gets fantastic when it finds its footing.

Secretly force socialism, communism and imperialism types of government onto the people of the United States of America.

Can't remember if anyone mentioned it but Tangerine on Netflix US was really excellent. It's a dramedy about two trans sex workers in LA on Christmas Eve, one of whom is tracking down her boyfriend/pimp who is cheating on her, and the other who is trying to get people to come see her sing at a local bar. It has some very funny moments, and some very dark moments. Sometimes, both at the same time. Really liked that two transwomen play the two lead roles, as opposed to recent critically acclaimed dramedies involving transsexuality.

Overall, it felt like a film that was doing a superb job of portraying people in a number of different roles that are normally relegated to the realm of "comic relief," token minority, or cardboard cut-out plot point.

I'd agree with that. S02 especially just seemed to return to pile more stuff on the characters in Broadchurch which made the ending seem kinda hollow to me, like it purposely swung too much the other way to try to dodge being unreasonably misanthropic . I also think the show lost a bit of momentum in S02 from focusing on all the court stuff.

That said I think it's a fair bit better than The Fall, which seemed like a parody of a dark crime drama that didn't realize it was a parody. I didn't think Happy Valley was well received around here, although I thought it was fine. The change in tone does seem a bit quick, as was mentioned by someone before.

This is unrelated to anything currently being discussed, but if anime is your thing, like, at all you should check out Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works on Netflix

The plot is pretty dumb (it does take some neat turns and the setting is ridiculously cool, but it's so laden down with Dumb Anime Bullshit that it ends up canceling out) but the plot is basically an excuse for people to beat/shoot/sword the poo poo out of each other, and the show delivers on that in spades

I noticed that Stir of Echoes 2 was up on netflix so I started it and it was creepy enough that I stopped and went back and rewatched Stir of Echoes.

I was expecting the sequel to be really low budget and lovely from the opening credits (and the fact that there was a sequel to such a one-off movie) but it seemed pretty good, and the original still creeps me the gently caress out, which is hard to do.

I think that movie is where my squeamishness about yanked-off fingernails came from... The mirror scene oh god :barf:

Also the "dehydration" theme is really effective for some reason that I can't quite put my finger on. Every time Kevin Bacon (and Rob Lowe) gulp down something after a vision/etc, it hits really hard. Also, the loving jackhammer at the hardware store

Nope, I've been puttering through the first one this morning/afternoon, and am just about to go back into it for the sequel. I'll letcha know if the sequel keeps holding up but after watching Stir of Echoes 1 again (I hadn't realized how long ago it was I watched it,) I'm really looking forward to piecing apart the sequel, because holy poo poo was the first one a well put-together movie. So many scenes, the young son as a sort of greek chorus throughout, weird foreshadowing that's inexplicable by "he's talking to ghosts", the scene where Bacon walks out into the rain and cleanses himself after his epic dig..

What a good movie.

edit: fwiw: the first 20 minutes (which I've watched twice now) of the sequel are pretty low budget and extremely well done. I have high hopes for the rest of the movie. The filters they use in the opening scene really bleed out everything except for reds and flesh tones and it's super effective, and despite the bit when the van opens up being hard to look at, I'd recommend you take note of the wounds and clothing on the bodies. And the homecoming scene feels like a bit of an homage to the climax of the previous movie. ;)

Oh poo poo, Fate/zero is on Netflix too? I watched that when it was new but I didn't realize they put it up. That one's better than UBW by a decent margin in the story department, but not quite as good in the fights; it's worth watching for how much of an absolute stone cold loving baller the main protagonist (and Iskandar, but in a vastly different way) are, if nothing else.

Stir of Echoes 2 up right now on Netflix. Robe Lowe is one of my :allears: actors, I don't know why he sees to constantly remain a B-lister however, he's really great and self-aware enough to remain enjoyable in almost anything he works in.

I really started this show with low hopes, with the "Kick'n Films" or whatever thing hitting me in the face before it opens up with a :snore: shot of soldiers in Generic Middle-Eastern Area. The opening scene involves a very low-budget-looking van that screams innuendo at you, a dorky tank, and a surprising amount of tension. Then I realized that it's all basically a screenplay - we're talking Death of a Salesman budget. The movie is set entirely in the same universe as the first movie, there are a lot of neat little homages to the first movie, and even an actual character from the first movie. And this movie has more politics than I expected, so apologies for that.

It's good. It's creepy, hits most of the same notes right from the first movie (I LOVED the dick in the yellow polo being identical to the dick in the red shirt from the first movie, who saved Kevin Bacon and his family). It hits some entirely different notes from the first and hits them hard, but everything follows through in the end, just like the first Stir of Echoes.

I think my least favorite bit was the reveal of ...the son from the first movie..., it was an almost Candyman or Hellraiser level of kitsch, although doing a double feature of the two movies kind of shocked me at how dated the costumes in the first one were - was the first movie set in the 80s? I mean holy poo poo mom jeans.
