It seems to unfortunately be based on the victim's statements and conversations with the victim's mom which doesn't seem to make for a very strong case against what will likely be a very good defense. I mean, the only thing worse in this situation than no charges is for him to be acquitted. Current gossip is that the statute of limitations was about to run out so this was a way to extend the evidence-gathering window.

Combed Thunderclap posted:Based on what I now know from the A/T LARP thread, the only surprise is that there aren't more GOP politicians who are Masquerade/Mind's Eye/Camarilla players. How do you know there aren't? Like we hear about it when someone gets busted, but not all that often. At the state legislature level, opposition research is rather limited to what's made the news or official reports. You're not going to have the budget to go heavy into PIs for until you get to the Congressional level, and you can't feasibly interview every ex-girlfriend at much below the Presidential level (maybe a big Senate/Governor race). It's an order of magnitude easier to just make poo poo up or take something ridiculously out of context than it is to break into a dude's house looking for fake fangs or something. Plus most of these politicians know for months in advance that they're running, so it's just a matter of dipping out of your LARP group a few months before you announce (and before you're on the other guy's radar). It's not like it's something people publicize about themselves, right? The average LARPer doesn't mention it at the watercooler or put it on their Christmas card. And it's not like you're introducing yourself to your LARP buddies, right? I'm a (Democratic) political activist and I'm not sure I'd recognize the most of the local elected Republicans by sight (especially in the dark, wearing make-up), and there's basically no chance I'd recognize someone from an adjacent county. Especially since the average Republican politician is a middle-age white person, and they all look the same, even to us fellow white people. The average person has basically no interaction with their state legislator either - every 2-4 years you get a mailer reminding you to vote for him, he shows up at the occasional event and says a few words, but the vast majority of constituents don't know his name or anything.
