When the rolling stone rape story started to fall apart there were still opinion piece writers and tv talking heads saying that the farce should be continued and that no repercussions should occur either to the writer or the source of the story because that would let misogynists and the far right win and would hurt other women who would come forward at a later date. When James Deen the porn star was accused a buzzfeed "journalist" who had written about him several times and was supposedly a friend of the couple came forth saying that she knew the allegations were false but she still wanted to support Stoya because it would encourage more women to come forward. There is a very ugly mindset that some people hold that suggests that any rape allegation even one that appears hollow, false, and self serving should be listened to, and believed. Unfortunately for Hillary it is far more likely to be people who would otherwise vote for a democrat that hold this view.
