The more you kick against the pricks, the more you suffer.
I'm guessing the 10k bond was just on the federal probation violation.

When you're PC arrested (like this dude was) for a felony offense, there isn't a set bail. You're brought before a judge the next day who sets your bail based on the charge, your history, your incentive and likelihood to flee, etc.

That would, incidentally explain why the other driver of the other vehicle wasn't arrested. The Pigly-Wigly isn't Base. If a cop sees the guy driving a stolen truck, he's got good PC for the arrest. If he sees the other guy in the supermarket where the truck is parked, he doesn't. Yet. So he take some pictures, gets some witness statements, pulls the parking lot security feed and takes it to a judge for a warrant.

Yes, of which, "theft of services" is a legit claim re: electricity.

Intel&Sebastian posted:

I don't buy the idea that its impossible for the FBI of all people to cut power to one remote set of buildings without affecting people 30 miles away but whatever.

I think you're making valid points for the most part in this thread. But I want to address this by quoting myself from earlier:

highme posted:

From what I can see, it's a legit claim.

I work in the GIS department of a major electric utility, specifically mapping the distribution network. I have worked on a couple of massive data clean up projects where we end up relying on Street view & aerial imagery to verify facilities in the field. Since we serve a huge portion of the middle of nowhere Western US, the imagery available to us for these areas isn't very high quality. As a result I have become really good at identifying equipment on poles, and how power is delivered from grainy rear end photos.

When the claim was made that they couldn't shut off power to the Visitor's Center without affecting other customers I was leery. Without looking, I assumed they were on a single phase tap line. Those lines are usually protected by a fuse at the tap, so to kill power you'd just open the fuse. I decided to see if Google had driven those roads or not, they did, in 2009. So the data is 6 years old and the photos are not great. From what I can see they get service from transformer on a 3 phase trunk line. This means that there is no easy way to cut service that does not affect other customers. And since this is a small, rural coop utility with little growth in the area, I don't expect much has changed in 6 years.

Basically, the wildlife refuge is not remote enough to be on an isolated distribution line. To my eye, with the obvious possibility that things have changed and I'm wrong, the service to that location is provided via a major trunk line. Additionally, the electric utility for that area is a small co-op, meaning they have very little in the way of margin above their rates and aren't likely to send their union linesman out to disconnect service to a location with a high probability of gunfire.

I'm a little confused at what happened regarding the recent arrest.

- There were two people in the fed's truck/van but only the passenger got arrested?
- The driver didn't get arrested because he wasn't actually driving and was inside the store when the arrest was made, so he got off on a technicality?
- The guy who got arrested wasn't even really arrested for being part of the militia but because he violet probation on a previous unrelated offense?
- Even if the driver got off because he wasn't technically driving the vehicle at the time, wouldn't waiting for him to come back prove that he WAS driving it in the first place?
- Even if they didn't do the above, wouldn't a few pictures or something of the guy getting in the van have done the job?
- Did the guys who arrested the one dude follow the truck into the grocery store parking lot, or did they just happen to bump into each other?

My understanding was:

Two guys go to town, 1 in truck and the other in a van.
Cops arrest one guy sitting in a vehicle, the other was inside the store.
Cops then tow both vehicles.
Guy they arrested was already on probation that was basically "don't do the exact thing you went and did in Oregon" so with any luck they're going away for awhile.
