Ghostlight posted:For serious, Consolidated fund, what up . Also my main criticism with this is that it's pretty toothless and transparent without the context of a) completely restructuring the way universities are funded or else the Government is just going to end up paying a bunch of people to bill itself for services it's providing, and b) if student debt is such a big loving deal, pair it with an announcement that you'll write off existing student loans - it's not like those are just going to vanish in the twelve years before this kicks in - or is Little just happy for people to deal with these supposedly serious issues until an arbitrary point in time?

Today is a chance to showcase New Zealand on the world stage. Instead, international media is broadcasting ugly, self-righteous hooliganism. They picked a bad year to protest. After 30 years of increasing trade, global absolute poverty will fall below 10 per cent for the first time in history. Absolute poverty has dropped two thirds over that period. Not to mention free trade being responsible for the cheap made-in-China clothes on the protesters’ backs. If they won’t research free trade, they could have at least gone to work like the rest of us. It’s already a short week – is working four days in a row too much for these people? If the TPP was signed on a weekend would they have Monday-ised the protest? The signing of the TPP is a huge win for New Zealand, and even bigger for developing countries such as Vietnam. Our exporters have increased access to huge markets. The volume of dairy concessions, for example, is actually greater than those gained in Labour’s NZ-China free trade agreement. What’s saddest, and indeed pathetic, about the protesters is that they’re actually objecting to very real improvements in the lives of impoverished people from around the globe. ACT has always been Parliament’s biggest cheerleader of free trade. Even Helen Clark knew she could always count on ACT’s votes for trade initiatives. Today we’re celebrating. Everything about David Seymour makes me want to punch him in his big dumb face. He's literally taking the facebook line "why dont they have a job to go to? At least WINZ will be empty"

The people blocking the motorway in protest will give up eventually.

You also do not use someone's hair to remove them from a protest. Ever. They are specifically trained (or not, if that AOS shooting is how the police do everything) to deal with people and restrain and remove them.

Kettle them until it becomes violent, then arrest the violent protesters for assaulting police officers while trying to leave the kettle, which is literally the only way to get out of the kettle. That's how they do it in Britain! Seriously, though, the most powerful countermeasure to a protest is to peacefully ignore the gently caress out of them. Let them have their little disruption, let them do their minimal damage to the economy, but for god's sake make sure they look like the bad guys in the long run.

While I dislike the TPP, I think sitting in the middle of a motorway is just plain stupid, especially if people were just running into traffic as the reports indicate. Keep the protests into the CBD around Sky City imo
