1. Wow, we are really, really stupid and have done a stupid thing.

Don't worry, the FBI is really good at letting people know they're hosed.

Not like them knowing is going to end this. they'll just ignore it as "unlawful" because the FBI is supposed to "only investigate in federal offices".
Just like when they said "we'll leave if the people want it", then the sheriff should tell them, then it was because the people were being oppressed. these fucks just make up bullshit to justify their ongoing retardation till big ol' daddy government finally comes in and wrings their collective neck.

I don't really know but my guess is neighboring ranchers and/or people with grazing permits on malheur have some irrigation work to do. Fry is arguing that impossible because it's frozen and irrigation means water. My guess is there is work on irrigation systems you do in the winter, but then I'm not a rancher so who knows.

The FBI say that they're letting people onto the land to irrigate.

Fry thinks that that sounds like bullshit because you can't irrigate if the temperature's so low that water doesn't flow.

It's entirely possible that it is actually a ruse given the news today, but "irrigate" would probably mean "dig/clear irrigation channels" in this instance, which isn't prevented and may well be helped by freezing temperatures. It's like he's never even played Dwarf Fortress.

I'll take a run at it. The ranchers probably wanted to do some irrigation work so the FBI has to accompany them. Fry sees a vicious FBI plot because it's frozen out. Who is doing irrigation work when it's frozen.

Well that's my guess

The great part is that if the FBI really planned on just letting them go until they could get the indictment finished, the three who aren't Sean Anderson could have had an opening to flee after making it through the roadblocks safely. Now that an indictment has been made, there's no way that they can leave the refuge except in handcuffs or a body bag.

I imagine that the FBI already has a sealed indictment for Blain and probably a bunch of other people involved in all this. They will just sit on those indictments until they have more of the people they want already in custody.

It does seem like the FBI is content to just wait the last 4 out and let winter do their work for them. Its been getting down to the single digits at night over there on top of 3 inches of snow having just fallen. The power to the buildings was also cut days ago. Any form of living under those conditions is basically a constant survival situation.

Just sitting around and doing nothing under those conditions requires a ton of constant calories. The fuel in their car tanks will only last so long before it runs out, and that is their last escape from the elements.

With the power off those buildings will become cold, dark caves. All the food will freeze solid, bursting all the canned goods as well as the fresh water. Cooking will require tremendous amounts of fuel (they have some propane cookers and wood), and they will burn through whatever supplies they have remaining fairly quickly I imagine. (To say nothing of the energy requirements to thaw fresh water for use.)

The only food that holds up under those conditions is either freeze dried stuff (which requires a bunch of water to use, so not much help under these circumstances) or fresh meat/veggies (which will require thawing before they can be worked into a meal.)

Doing normal daily things like dishes or cooking takes a shitload of extra energy when it is that cold as well. I would also be willing to bet that the last 4 don't have the piles of clean clothes you need on hand to survive in that weather either. (Dirty clothes retain heat signifigantly less well than clean clothes, adding substantially to their misery.)

Seems like the FBI is taking a cue from the Russians in WWII and letting "Commander Winter" do their work for them.

According to one of the OPB reporters who has been on the refuge, there are two gas pumps there which they have been using to top off their vehicles and generators. Eventually the tanks feeding those pumps will go, but in the meantime they're warming up (and sleeping? and charging their FBI phone) in running vehicles. They're gonna run out of Coors and snacks soon though.

Oh, ok. That makes sense. I had misread "ranchers" as "protestors," and I figured that "irrigate" meant "go pee." The mental picture of that was pretty funny.

My money is on their going in. I don't think that they intend to wait. I suspect that the irrigation thing is an excuse to perform a sweep as a prelude to entering the compound.

I say this partially because I think that they're becoming a danger to themselves by staying out there, and the risks associated with leaving them are starting to outweigh the (at this point, fairly low) risks involved in making arrests.

Once the USFWS and FBI are able to get back on the refuge, more charges should be forthcoming. And since they're charged with conspiracy, everything one person can be charged with can be charged to all of them.

I don't think anyone really has any idea how much is left in those tanks. I'm sure they probably knew how much was in there the morning of January 2, but how much has been used in the month since is anyone's guess. I bet every drat vehicle that showed up on the refuge probably filled up because HELL YEAH, FREE GAS!!!!! plus they were all coming and going back and forth to Burns at will for 26 days and that's more than 30 miles each way.
