Mystery Goomba posted:I was referring to the differences between the (sparse) polling being done in NV prior to the latest batch of polls this month -- Clinton had a +23 lead in December. CNN had her at +1 just two days ago. That's a lot of movement! I'm not so certain those numbers are going to be reflected on caucus night, though. If they are, then egg on my face It's nice to be right for once, but I wouldn't call this a huge win for Hillary. It's pretty clear she has big problems she needs to work on with younger voters. That's my super hot take of the day.

NV caucus trip report: I caucused at an elementary school like a block away from my house (in a middle-class, ethnically mixed area in the southeast part of Las Vegas). Turnout was huge - we didn't finish processing the line of people until 12:30 (we stopped letting people get in line at 12). Each classroom was a precinct site, but a number of them were literally too full so people had to stand out in the hallways. I somehow wound up serving as a volunteer for the site (directing traffic, valet parking, trying to convince the disability advocate that I had no power to do anything about the dick who parked in front of the wheelchair cut-out) and as the precinct secretary for my room (essentially writing down numbers on a big poster). My particular room was split about 60% for Clinton (almost entirely old white ladies, a few old white men and old black ladies, and one young Latino-looking guy) and 40% for Sanders (about half old white people, half young people of various ethnicities). The whole process took about two and a half hours. One and a half of those hours was getting people checked in and registered to vote; 45 minutes was reading letters aloud from people like Harry Reid and the campaigns; and about 45 minutes was spent on the actual process of dividing up into groups and counting them. And now I am done, and am going to eat a grilled cheese from In-N-Out.

I had forgotten that he was gonna take that and in it turn a half-hour long argument about minutiae, so I quickly left to hang out with people at the other side of the table while he argued with someone over whether Obama had the obligation to tell the FBI to not try to get the San Bernadino phone decrypted or whatever else they argued about Redditors occasionally leave the internet and go out into the world. They should be shunned there as they should be shunned anywhere else. Although for real if I go out with people and they start saying knowing things about 'opportunity' and how 'certain schools' have really gone down hill I will engage in half hour plus long harangues about why they are so dumb. Got a $300 donation for some after school stuff from a guy out of it once though.

~here's a thought~ bernie would get stonewalled by congress, since even in a democratic wave election practically all the new congresspeople would be well to his right, and the almost-inevitable anti-incumbent midterm election would make the second half of his term even worse you could say the same for hillary, but socialism/leftism/progressivism/whateverism would have a bigger image problem under that scenario than under the scenario where hillary does exactly the same thing

Most research says that people's political identities firms up early and stays similar through-out their entire life. You can call me naive or an idiot or whatever, but I legitimately have no idea what you're talking about and earnestly want to know. I'll vote for Trump over Clinton in the general because Trump isn't bought. It's a huge part of the appeal between Trump and Sanders is that neither of them are favored by money establishment. The overlap isn't so much in policy but in general populism. To people who feel like the system is rigged against them both Trump and Sanders appear to be on the same side; if that's your single issue. Trump is also promising a giant make work project in my state in the poorest area; hopefully pumping some stimulus in to the poor minority areas and my vote doesn't matter anyway so I feel sorry for all the liberals in battleground states that feel obligated to vote for Clinton.

But academic research indicates not only that generations have distinct political identities, but that most people’s basic outlooks and orientations are set fairly early on in life. As one famous longitudinal study of Bennington College women put it, “through late childhood and early adolescence, attitudes are relatively malleable…with the potential for dramatic change possible in late adolescence or early adulthood. [B]ut greater stability sets in at some early point, and attitudes tend to be increasingly persistent as people age.”

Trump isn't bought, becuase he has spent the last 30 years being the guy who buys people. I don't see why that is an advantage, to have a guy who directly benefits from this poo poo, rather just being back by those people?
